Something wasn't right. I was restrained!

"Don't move. I'm going to release the restraints on everything below your shoulders. You fell and received a blow to your head and neck. Gods know how you survived breaking your neck the way you hit the stairs."

"Nanites, super dense bones, and it’s also good thing I know a good doctor." I said grinning at him.

"Don't try to sweet talk me this time. You really had us worried. Trace, Tye, and Nature thought you were actually dead. I had to put them to sleep for a while to contain their panic. I also convinced Kyle to make a supply run. He left once he could tell you were stable. It wasn't easy, but I pointed out you ruined the ice cream for Rin's party and you’d be upset when you woke up if he didn’t go."

I smirked. "That was chocolate ice cream."

"So?" Jordan asked.

"Rin doesn't like chocolate. Don't worry I won't let Kyle know you tricked him. Though I don't know how it could have been spoiled the transport cases are designed to survive just about anything. Being tipped off a hover cart isn’t going to do much."

"What is the last thing you remember?" He asked, changing the subject.

"Dash and I had exited the shuttle and we met with Tye. He said he had a surprise, but wanted to wait in order to share it and . . . and that's it. Did he share his surprise?"

"They said that's what caused you to slip, but don't worry about that right now." I felt Wolf grip my right hand.

It was strange because I thought he was already holding my left.

"Dash, would you please go and get Nature for me. Only Nature Wolf. The others can wait their turn to see that he's fine. I just don't want to tire him too quickly."

"Yes Father, right away." He replied releasing my left hand.

"Father?" I asked in surprise.

Jordan laughed. "Luca may have built his body but I'm the one responsible for his mind. Well mostly, Mahan did help. I told you I want a big family. Before I got pregnant I created Dash's personality. I used our memory crystals edited so they only included our memories up to age sixteen. Mahan blended them. Sort of like using the merge system, he said, and Dash was created. I was going to upload him to a drone, but things changed." He smiled and ran his free hand over his growing belly. "I just filed the project away but it seems Mahan had other ideas."

"So, Dash really is our child."

"That's right mommy Nightiger." Jordan laughed.

"He told me Mom would be preferable to Mother, but as my program continues to grow I understand better that you are both my dads." Dash said as he returned with Nature.

"Nature, you have a surprise for us. Don't worry Prowl-Ar is restrained. I should tell you I already know what your surprise is and I'm not upset little brother." Jordan reassured him.

"How?" He asked, in surprise.

"You're family and Mahan keeps me well informed. I'm starting to suspect he tells me more than he does Prowl-Ar."

"I- ok I'm pregnant with three cubs." Nature said shyly.

"Wow, congratulations! So is Trace or Tye responsible for the twins?"

"Each baby has a different father." Nature said turning away.

I was quiet for a few moments. "I'll make sure Luca-"

"It's not Luka! I didn't sleep with Luka. I never slept with Luca. That was only Trace and Tye! You're the third baby’s father!" He yelled, turning back toward me.

"Nature! Calm down you shouldn’t be putting so much stress on yourself. As I said I knew and I'm not upset. Remember, I was the one that had sex with you. I was just using Prowl-Ar’s body at the time." Jordan said, rapidly.

"I- I’m not upset. I- yeah, I can understand why I fell after hearing this. So, what are we going to do now?" I asked, quietly.

"We honestly don't know. We're not going to be your mates, you have enough of those. However we'll be sharing in the raising of our children. Before you correct me, let me make it clear, if Jordan is willing, I'd eventually like to carry a pup from him as well."

I was stunned and from his silence I figured Jordan was as well.

"Furthermore we need to discuss something with your mates. Now we know we have to be very careful not to mess things up for Rin and her boyfriend, but my mates would like for you to spend the night with them. This time with you in complete control of your body, rather than Jordan. I doubt you'll get much sleep considering I haven't exactly felt like doing anything with them. For my part, I'd like to spend the night alone with Jordan. No sex, just cuddling and talking about what we're going through right now and other things."

"I think it would be good for him to have some bonding time with his sons. Kyle is likely to agree. As for Shock and Rider, I'll convince them."

"Um, what about me?" I asked.

"What about you? You've been keeping things from me, and punishing you in traditional ways just hurts all of us. This way everyone wins. And don't try to deny the thoughts that raced through your head when Nature suggested it were as dirty as they can get." Jordan replied.

"I love you, and everything about you. However there are times I wish you couldn't see every thought." I laughed.

Jordan leaned down and kissed me. "You're super cute when you make that fake upset face." He thought.

"Not as cute as you are all the time."

"Hush you. You're the cutest one, my little marshmallow tiger."

"I uh- It's only for one night. It's not like you two are going to be separated by more than a couple of walls." Nature stammered.

“Nature, as far as I’m concerned you and Jordan can spend as much time as you want together.”

"Dad? Mom? Is this supposed to happen?" Dash asked, interrupting us.

"Well that is surprising. I guess this means you’re currently identifying as male."

I couldn't move my head yet, but I could guess from Nature's comment that Dash most likely had been aroused by our conversation.

"It's completely normal. You were excited by what we were talking about and it activated your penis module. This means you are probably closer to the male gender than female. However, only time and you can determine that." Jordan explained.

"I'd suggest you give yourself time to settle into your body and for your personality to fully mature before you go looking for sex." I added.

There was a distinct tone and Jordan leaned into my line of vision. "You were lucky once again but you need to stop scaring me like this." He said, as removed the last of the restraints.

"I'll try, if everyone else will try to stop surprising me." I replied as I sat up.

"It's a good thing you have such a forgiving doctor. I'm sure Brooke would have made sure you had a concussion at the least."

"Brooke!" I'd forgotten her.

"Don't worry, I made sure Kyle picked her up when you were getting Luca. You know how well those two get along. She's out in the hall with Rider dealing with any psychological damage."

"Ouch. You better let them in then, before someone loses their head. First, Nature, as I said, what you and Jordan decide is up to you. However Trace and Tye are going to need to wait, at least until Ryu and his Mom have left."

Nature jumped as Jordan wrapped his arms around him. "It should be fun."

"So what stupid mess did our tiger get himself into this time?" Kyle growled as he entered.

"You're back already?" Jordan asked, in surprise.

"Yeah, funny thing though, the freezer was already well stocked. You sent me on that little trip just to distract me."

"I did not, there is never enough ice cream."

Shock laughed, as he entered. "He's right about that."

"Besides, I needed you calm before you learned what happened."

I noticed Nature inching toward the door. "Hold it. Nature get over here." He tucked his tail and came back over to my side. "Now, I want you to tell Kyle and Shock what surprised me."

"I- can't you get Trace or Tye to tell them? They're so much better with confrontation."

I sighed and put my arm around him. "Nature is carrying triplets."

"Oh wow! Congratulations! I'm sure Trace and Tye are thrilled." Shock said happily.

"Shock, I don't think that is enough to put our Tiger in here." Kyle said flatly.

"E-each of my cubs has a different father."

"I see. Do you want me to kill Luca a couple of times so that he lives up to his responsibilities as a father?" Kyle asked.

"Drake, Luca isn't the father, I am."

Shock and Kyle stared at me in silence for several seconds.

"Nature, do you want me to kill Prowl-Ar a couple of times for being so foolish?" He asked again.

"That's not funny. Especially with what he just went through and because I was the one in control of Tiger's body at the time." Jordan growled.

"All of you cut it out!" Shock yelled. "Nature, despite their foolishness I can tell you we're all happy for you and no matter what all of your cubs are part of the family. They'll receive all the love they can. Likely to the point that once they're teens they'll accuse all of us of smothering them."

Nature hugged Shock. "Thank you. I- I needed to hear that."

"Good, now would someone please introduce us to the cute Synth in the room?" Shock asked.

I laughed as Dash's faceplate went pink.

"If you could give me a minute? This is my party after all." Rin yelled.

I heard a couple if laughs. But it was hard to deny Rin's request since she was standing on a table.

"I'd like to thank everyone for being here, even though I'm sure my parents didn't give you a choice. Still, I want to thank them, most of all. When they found me I was a scared little girl who had been tossed out on the streets. Even though they only knew me from a game they came to my rescue. Since then I've learned that true family are the ones who love me no matter what and encourage me to be what is right for me. From Dad encouraging my modeling hobby and interest in engineering, Papa Shock teaching me to dance, Daddy Kyle teaching me to be careful what I eat. Papa Jordan and Daddy Rider for keeping me healthy and sane, at least as sane as one can be on a ship where I was the only non-gay individual."

"We're still working on that. The sanity part, not the gay part. You be you girl!" Shock yelled.

Rin blushed but continued. "Next I want to thank Luca. You were honest with me and even though it hurt. It was something I needed to hear. Vexy. Vexy, Vexy, Vexy when you joined the crew you were as broken if not more than I was. It was a bad time what with Dad in a coma and everyone seemingly more worried about that. That left you in my care. Look at you now. Mated with three kobolds to keep you busy and very soon a ship of your own. I'd pat myself on the back, but the truth is you did it all on your own with just a little advice here and there."

"You can't have him." Raid yelled.

"He's ours." Shadow added.

"You already have a Dragon of your own." Legend hissed.

"Enough! If it wasn't for Rin none of us would be here, so behave yourselves. Sorry about that Rin." Vexy yelled.

"There is one last person I need to thank." Rin got off the table and walked over to Chiyo. "My fathers and the crew have been wonderful, but you were my first savior and I'll always think of you as Momma Chiyo." They hugged each other doing their best to hide their tears.

Kyle chose that moment to roll out a giant cardboard cake. I groaned, surly he hadn't done something so stupid. I quickly did a check and everyone seemed to be accounted for. Did he bring in an outsider or would it be one of Mahan's drones?

"Um, Daddy, What is this?" Rin asked.

"I know you said no gifts but someone went to a lot of work, and a lot of bribery to make this one happen." Shock answered.

"So Shock was involved as well?" I thought in surprise.

"I don't know anything about this either and I don't think I approve. This can only cause problems." Jordan thought to me.

It was too late the top had exploded and a pole rose from the box. Wrapped around it was Ryu. I glanced to where he'd been standing in time to see a drone waking away. Music started pulsing And Ryu started dancing around the pole. He had on a t-shirt and shorts so it wasn't exactly indecent but still, he was pole dancing. Rather provocatively since we were all surprised when Snowpaws leaped to the top of the pole shifting back into Rin. Still the impact was enough for the unsecured contraption to tip over Surprisingly Rin had shifted again cushioning their fall. As we pulled the debris away we found Ryu on top locked in an awkward kiss with the anthro lynx.

"Ryu! What the hell are you thinking?" Chiyo yelled.

They finally broke the kiss and we helped them up.

"I thought I'd do something fun for my girlfriend. You've always said I needed to be more outgoing."

"This- this isn't what I meant. You, young man are grounded."

Ryu laughed. "You can't ground me, not when I'm headed for the space station in a week for school, and you're moving to the colonies."

"There's still a week before school."

"Captain Prowl-Ar-". Ryu started.

"Oh no, you're not dragging me into this one."

"DaaAaad." Rin whined.

"I said I'm not getting involved."

"Lord Lightstripe, under Shadow Runner Law I am of age and can therefore ask for separate lodgings from my Mother, correct?" Ryu asked.

I knew they'd figure out the only way to force my hand.

"What are you talking about you're only sixteen." Chiyo yelled.

"He's right, in the furry nation he's considered an adult the same as Rin. If they wanted they could request lodging together or even get married." Kyle said.

"Kyle! Stop helping." I muttered. I turned took a dep breath and stepped into the pool. "Love, I can hold my breath for about ten minutes when prepared. Let me know when the yelling stops so I can surface."

"So you're just running away?"

"Not exactly, I knew this was coming and there is a house set up for Rin and Ryu, but I foolishly thought it would be less dramatic. I hate to tell you this, but you mated a coward."

"I think you're being overly dramatic and you certainly aren't a coward. A coward doesn't risk his own life, especially after finding a mate, to save a planet of strangers. He doesn't run to save a young girl knowing he's going to be responsible for her for the rest of her life. He doesn't rush to the aid of a stabbing victim who he'd only met for a few moments in a game."

"It was more than a few moments; and I knew I had a bond of some sort with you immediately."

"You've taken on assassins and presidents. Are you going to tell me that an upset parent is going to send you into hiding?"

"Um, maybe." The mental chuckle that rang through my head was perhaps the scariest thing I'd ever imagined.

"I'll be sure to share that with Nature. Now get out here, our guests are getting worried about you."

"Fine." I surfaced and pulled myself out of the pool. Only to be shoved back in by Rin.

"Don't you ever do that again!" She yelled angrily.

"Rin, I'm not a house cat. Tigers enjoy a nice dip from time to time. Besides if there is a pool I'm likely to step into it without warning. It's just something I do."

She glared at me. "Well, while you were making a fool of yourself and distracting everyone I worked things out with Momma Chiyo and my fiancée."

"What!" Shock yelled.

"Ok, intended fiancée. Ryu will continue to stay with his Mom until school starts and we are in our separate dorms. Also we aren’t allowed to officially start dating until we're eighteen."

I realized several things that Chiyo likely didn't know. First Rin and Frost shared private family quarters on the station after what happened with the bullies. Because Ryu was sixteen he could spend as much time there as he liked as long as he had Rin and Frost's permission. Also Rin could set the quarters to full privacy and only Mahan would ever know what was going on. I was about to ruin that for her. "Rin, you haven't been completely honest."

"What!" I'm not sure who yelled louder Rin, Ryu, or Chiyo.

"It seems you've learned from me how to leave out information. Like the fact you have private quarters on the station rather than being in a dorm. So I want you to agree right now, so Lady Chiyo knows you’re not trying to trick her that you and Ryu can date each other, but you will not be engaging in any sexual activity on the station."

Everyone looked stunned.

"Tiger, isn't that being rather cruel? They are of age and you gave her permission and now you're taking it away?" Jordan asked telepathically.

"Once she agrees remind her she also has a racer and now that she's of age she can travel here to Earth, the colonies, junkyard station, and the Runner once it's completed. I'm not punishing her so much as reminding her not to try that trick on us." I mentally responded.

"Mr. Nightiger you are rather blunt, but I would be willing to let them date under such restrictions." Chiyo agreed. "Wait, no slipping down here to Earth or the colonies either." She added.

"I-" Rin started.

"Can I talk with our daughter for a moment? Before she elopes with Ryu because of you two controlling parents?" Jordan asked leading Rin away from the party without waiting for permission.

"Mom, I know you think I'm still a child, and yes I admit I'm still young, but do I need to point out you fell in love with Dad when you were seventeen?"

"That may be true, but my parents made him court me for two years and follow all the traditional customs before he could even propose. What sort of tradition do they have?"

"Only one." Kyle said, stepping forward. "We have to love each other so deeply that nothing else matters except our mates as a whole. Some of us have problems that need to be overcome, some have bonds deeper than others. If one of us has a problem," he looked at me, "it doesn't take long before we all know. Sure we have secrets from each other, but only because we don't trust ourselves. That is what it means to be mates in this family. Beyond that we're not exactly normal and we're working it out as we go. If anything you should feel lucky that Ryu and Rin are together because, as I understand it, you are the one that Rin thinks of as a mother figure. What more could any mother in law ask from her son's wife than such an honor. Honestly I don't know what is wrong with either of you. Since Rin is a shifter it's not like she will get pregnant and let's be honest sex is fun." With his little speech made Kyle turned and stalked off toward the kitchen mumbling about making a change to the cakes.

"Wow. I've never seen him so angry." Vexy muttered, reminding all of us that it wasn't just us at this little party.

"That's not anger, that's frustration.” Shock said, sadly. “According to the lore, because Kyle's species age slower, he's sort of considered to be underage even though he's over a hundred and fifty. It's hard to be certain since he and Mahan refuse to say how long he was around before he became Prowl-Ar's first mate. Hell at barely eighteen I was barely an adult, but when I met Prowl-Ar and Kyle I knew I would do whatever I had to, to be with them. Even if it meant I'd be their slave or pet. Luckily they made me their soul mate instead. With Jordan it was different. Kyle and I knew right away there was something between him and Prowl-Ar so we made sure to help that grow. Then Rider came along and I won't deny there was some friction, but we worked that out without having to involve Jordan and Prowl-Ar. And our family is still growing."

"I am not looking for more mates. You lot tire me out enough as it is." I said with a sigh.

Shock laughed "I meant our kids, Frost, Rin, Trace, Tye, Nature, Dash, and the babies."

"Babies?" Chiyo asked.

"Oh you couldn't tell? Nature and Jordan are pregnant." I said smiling slightly.

There was a choking sound and we all turned to look at Luca. He was ash white and looking on the verge of panic.

"Calm down, you're not the father of my cubs. Remember we never had sex." Nature said with a laugh. "However if you're not a bit more restrained you may end up becoming a father before you expect to be."

"Uh, pardon my confusion, but I thought . . . well, isn't Jordan- I mean . . ." Chiyo tried to ask.

"Male? Yes, just like Nature, however we have the medical tech to alter the body in a number of ways. It is highly improbable for a shifter to impregnate or become pregnant without help. Meaning mates have to be adjusted so they can produce offspring."

"So, I'll never have grandchildren?" Chiyo asked.

"No, it just means if or when Rin and Ryu decide they're ready to have kids they'll be altered so that they are compatible and you'll get you grandchildren. Though they're not likely to be in any rush. It takes time to get used to the idea when you know you'll live longer than most humans."

"Ok, I agree no sex-" Rin started to say as she and Jordan returned.

"Never mind that. I was just being old fashioned. You two just be happy together."

"I don't understand." She said, in surprise. She glanced past Chiyo to Ryu and I realized he was using the sign language from the game "accept and agree" Over and over.

"Ok, I don't know what everyone talked about, but I'm not going to say no to no restrictions." Rin said in confusion.

"Okay! Drama time is over! Now for cake and ice cream." Kyle yelled, as he and a couple drones wheeled a long cart out. “First up Strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting and fresh strawberries. Next white cake with vanilla frosting and sprinkles. Then a nice chocolate fudge cake with chocolate frosting and shaved chocolate swirls. Finally, as a special request chocolate cake with mango frosting and candied mango slices."

I felt like going back in the pool and never surfacing. Except that Jordan had run over to Kyle and kissed him deeply. "I didn't think you would make it."

"I think our tiger would agree that we'd do anything for you." Kyle said, blushing.

I sighed and walked over, "He's right, if you'd told me you were craving mangos I- I'd have even gone and gotten them for you."

"Did you get the ice-cream too?" Jordan asked.

I groaned and Kyle laughed. I did but I had to make some of it myself. There seems to be a lack of certain flavors. Honestly, I was sort of surprised I was able to find the dill pickle ice cream. The shop owner figured it must be a request from my ‘wife’. It seems popular among pregnant individuals. Also I’m still working on the sweet onion flavor. I'm having trouble getting the right balance."

I covered my face with one hand. My worst nightmare had now manifested. Kyle and Jordan together in the quest for the perfect food flavor. I needed to find a hidden spot to set up a food generator or I’d starve.

Everyone sort of trickled away after the party. Tank and his crew had a schedule to maintain, and needed to get back to the Bad Luck. So they left that evening. I made sure everyone knew the island belonged to the Runners, so they could return to rest any time they wanted.

The next morning Vexy's group was ready to go. Vexy seemed even more withdrawn than normal so I decided to take them up. It was just the two of us in the cockpit Kohan was watching the kobold trio in the main area.

"Captain, There's something I need to ask you." Vexy started.

"Go ahead."

"Um, what sort of drive systems will the Dragon's Hoard have?"

I doubted that was what he really wanted to know. "Well, it has four types of drive system. Anti-gravity which allows for atmospheric maneuvering. The real space engines that create plasma that is then expelled through thrusters. A warp engine powered by a matter/anti-matter reactor allowing you to create a bubble in space time around the ship. Space compresses and expands around the bubble allowing you to travel faster than light without the time dilation effects. Finally you have a Freem drive. However, only use that drive to travel between set beacons. The only way to safely navigate altered space without beacons is to use the Shadow Runner's merge system and your ship is too small for that."

"Oh, the thing is, I know you're reluctant to travel away from Earth but I- we want to explore. I thought maybe we'd be able to at least go to Alpha Centauri."

"Four months at top speed." I said simply.

"What? You’ve been there?" Vexy asked.

"No, I just know how long it would take. Once you get there set up a jump beacon and Freem jump back. The trip back should only take fifteen to twenty minutes and you'll have established the first strand of a jump network. However I'd suggest you take your time and make the trip slower maybe a year, giving your sensors time to warn of anomalies like planetesimals. If you don't have time to react you'll be dead before you realize it. While it'll be easy bringing all of you back with the sentinel program; it takes longer rebuilding your ship."

"So, you're okay with us just taking off like that?"

"Well no, not really. However I’m not going to stop you. However, if you come on a First Contact situation activate a beacon and we'll be there as quickly as possible. The Dragon's Hoard is going to be a tough ship but . . . It would be like a lone kobold armed with a stick when compared to the Runner in power."

"So wait for the Runner refit to be completed, take it slow, and call for reinforcements if we meet anyone else. Is that it?" Vexy asked, sounding surprised.

"Yeah, did you think I'd forbid you from exploring?"

"Actually, yeah, I did."

I laughed "It's probably a good idea to spread out a bit if our species, and I mean humans and shifters, want to be sure we have the best chance at survival." I said, as I took the shuttle to altered space.

"Um, I thought we were going back to the furry station, not the Junkyard station."

"And strand you again? It's just more practical for you to move in and get used to your own ship."

"It's done already?"

"Complete as of two days ago. There just isn't enough room in the island's hangar for it."

I swear Vexy was bouncing as we came out of altered space. I knew getting his ship would improve his mood.

The shuttle seemed sluggish as we lifted. That meant the anti-grav system needed to be recharged. I'd need to jump to the Junkyard and switch it for a new shuttle.

It had been a week and it was time to take the kids to school, Chiyo to colony 1 and surprisingly Luca back to colony 2.

I had Luca in the cockpit this time since Rin, Ryu, and Frost were helping Chiyo "adjust" to space travel.

"So Luca, why are you headed back so soon? You missing out on all that sex?"

"I'd be lying if I said no. However the sex isn't the most important thing. Seeing how well Dash is developing I want to get back to work. I overheard Vexy say something about traveling to another star system. It got me thinking that if there isn't an Earth like planet it might make a good place to establish a Synth colony."

"Don't you think establishing a human or furry colony should come first?" I asked.

"Honestly? No, I don't. The Synth AI is based on humanity, knowing Mahan it's the best of humanity as well. Because of their versatility and adaptability even if humanity is wiped out the Synths would still carry on what makes us who we are. Plus they’ll have a quicker and easier time setting up an eventual colony for human habitation."

"I guess that makes sense."

"So, I need to get another unit or two online and have them ready before Vexy decides to leave. Besides, it’s not like anyone on the island is willing to 'help' when I feel horny. Still if I might be able to convince you to provide me with a racer so I can return, with only a couple of guests. It might be nice as an occasional getaway."

I let the colony's automated docking bring us in.

"Yeah, I might be able to agree to that, but House is off limits."

"Did you meddle with my dreams?" I asked.

"When? I’ve been sort of busy here." Wolf said, indicating Nate and Alex.

"I was just wondering." I felt tired but also sad. "In my dream I'd been carrying three pups. One each from you, Nature, and Shock. Plus Kyle had two kids, Seto with you and Aerith with Nature. But that's not possible. Unless I die and I was dreaming of my replacement."

"Are you sure you want to go through this? I mean it was worth it, but it wasn't easy or fun. I even hurt you." Wolf asked, as if he refused to consider the possibility of my death.

I smiled. "From the moment I held Sakura and Alex I knew I needed to one day return that same feeling to you and Nature."

"It's just a dream but it's impossible to tell what is going to happen in the future. Maybe you find a way to make the Evolver work with your altered DNA a couple more times." Wolf said, as he rested his head on my shoulder. "Whatever the case I don't want you dying again." He shook his head slightly. "I mean dying I must be more tired than I thought."

"I needed to ask you something. Nature mentioned something being wrong with the cubs but they seem alright, so it can wait."

Wolf laughed. "You know I want to have cubs with all our mates. Only you told me I needed to wait until the cubs are at least two years old."

"Yes?"

"The cubs are going to grow up fast. About two to one for the first two years and then they will slow to normal over the next few years. I didn't want to take their childhood away after all."

I sighed. "You didn't have to do that. The two year rule is more of a guideline than a rule. You're not actually female so your body needs more time to recover between pregnancies."

"This is turning you on isn't it?" He asked.

"Huh?" I uttered in surprise glancing down. I blushed. "Sorry."

"Don't be, when the babies are all settled again. I need you. It's been too long since you've shared with me."

"On one condition."

"What condition?" He whined.

"You let me take care of you at the same time." I replied pointing out his own erection.

"Feeling a lack of wolf in your diet?" He laughed.

"Desperately."

“Captain, I think you should see this.”

“Mahan, I’m heading for bed. Whatever it is can wait.” I said, as I forced myself to continue moving.

“It can’t wait. It’s going out live.”

“What is it?” I groaned.

“Some of you might recognize me from the Shadow Runner’s virtual reality game. If you don’t it doesn’t matter. I’m not really that important. At least that’s what I’ve thought my whole life. I’m nobody and nothing special. At least I was until the Shadow Runners let me join them. Now- Well, I’m still not really important. At least not yet.” Vexy said.

“Mahan, open a second feed so that I can respond.”

“Sorry, Vexy anticipated that and requested that this be his platform only.”

“Prowl-Ar was good enough to give me a ship. It isn’t huge but it is enough for me and my new family. I’m not one for talking much and I’ll admit I didn’t really do much to prepare for this little speech, but I just want everyone to know who I am, at least who I want to be known as. I’m Vexy Varek, the first shifter dragon- No, the first Human to travel beyond our solar system and out into the unknown.” Vexy smiled and nodded to someone, likely Kohan. “The next time you hear from me, if I understand enough of Prowl-Ar’s communications technology, I’ll be looking out on Alpha Centauri. This is goodbye Earth. I hope you’re still here when I send my next message. Vexy Varek, out.”

“That’s it they’ve gone to warp. We’re now out of touch until they drop back into real space.” Mahan informed me. “Do you wish to respond?”

“I’m not exactly . . . Yeah, but use an image projection so I don’t look like hell warmed over.”

“You’re on.”

“Sorry, I won’t take up too much of your time. Vexy, while telling the truth, was just a bit overly dramatic about it. With the propulsion system he’s using he can easily make it to Alpha Centauri in four months. That’s our months. For him less time will pass but not much less. However due to the nature of his trip I’ve suggested he take it slow. So, we should hear back from him in about a year. However, that doesn’t diminish the fact that he will indeed be the first, known human, to travel to another star system. I’m sure I’m not the only one that is wishing him a safe trip and can’t wait to learn about all the new things he and his crew discover.”

“Ending transmission.” Mahan said plainly.

“Good, now let me die for a few hours before I’m on diaper duty again.” I groaned as I fell on the bed and someone pushed me to one side. We’d sort of given up on any sort of organized sleeping arrangement.
