Surviving one harrowing encounter with his ex and her new fling, Astor only gets a brief moment of rest before he's attacked by Wolven assassins. After a hasty retreat, he and his new team escape into the Marches, but there's greater dangers lurking in the dry grasses of the steppes.

Takes place directly after Old Bounty, Old Fling. Might be confusing to read otherwise.

There’s certain things about magic that aren’t public knowledge and every species seems to have their own special, little ways of dealing with the unknown areas. Humans tend to few that unexplored regions with reverence, filling it in with whatever their wild imaginations can think up; Foxes do the same thing, but with more fear than reverence. Equines don’t seem to think much about magic whatsoever while Bears burn any Human they find with a Mage’s tattoo.

Wolves though, they have both a wild imagination and a thick-headed denial of the areas they do not understand. They know full well that a conscious mage could, with concentration, ignite the air around them, despite the fact that this would just as likely result in charred lungs for the mage. At the same time, they refuse to consider for a moment that magic can take more creative forms, such as invisible tripwires that set off an alarm clock in the slumbering mind of the most dangerous rogue Mage in the world.

Perhaps the one in my bedroom learned to be a bit more open-minded when I woke up and planted a throwing knife in his skull.

I stared back at the dead, brown eyes peeking out from under the black hood and the grip of the knife sticking out from his forehead and sighed.

“Had to ruin a perfectly good night, huh?”

There was a rustling next to me and a hairy palm gripped at my shoulder, “Astor! What happened!?”

Turning to face the black and white Collie whom I spent the night with, I rubbed his nose with mine and kissing him on the mouth, “Go back to sleep, love.”

“Fire,” he sniffed at the air.

“I don’t smell anything.”

He stared back at me with his baby blue eyes, twitching his black nose for emphasis.

“Right, right...” I muttered, pushing the blankets aside and throwing my shirt on. Looking back at him, wide-eyed and terrified, I could not help the urge, “Maybe we should leave...but how about we cuddle a bit first?”

My suggestion for further amour was broken by an ear-shattering shriek from the neighboring room.

“Min...”

Snatching and drawing my sword from its scabbard I charged towards the door, yanking it open just in time to see a body fly down the hall. For the split second I saw it, I could tell it was lupine, brown-furred, and its chest looked as if a catapult stone slammed into it. Looking to the left, I saw a huge, brown horse with a disheveled mane carrying an equally massive, blood-stained mace.

“Hale.”

“Astor,” he nodded back, “These Wolves friends of yours?”

“They’d probably like to make my acquaintance,” I grimaced bitterly, “They probably wouldn’t back down like you did last night.”

“Hey,” he shrugged, “Sorry about that.”

“No, no. Let me give you some advice,” I raised a finger, pausing for a minute, partly because I’m not sure why I was giving my ex’s boyfriend advice, “Don’t do everything she tells you to do, it’ll only end in tears. If you want things to last, you gotta push back once in awhile.”

“And that’s why you’re still together?”

“Fuck off.”

“Sorry,” he chuckled, showing off his square teeth, “Equine humor. Very dry. Like the plains.”

At this point, even I began to notice the tell-tale scent of smoke gently wafting into my nostrils. Said smell become smothering when I looked back and saw a stairwell choked with black smog.

“Shit!”

The Collie bartender came to my side, hugging my arm, “My bar...my bar!”

“Yeah,” I turned back to face Hale who was as plain-faced as ever, “I should have probably mentioned that.”

“Equine humor?” I spat.

“No, just caught in the moment,” he shrugged, “Sorry.”

“Shit!” I pulled the Collie by the paw past Hale and into his bedroom. It was empty, save for the furniture. Thoughts about what to do dashed through my mind as I rubbed at the tattoo on my palm, feeling only the barest trace of magic. Not enough. Not enough for this…

“Hey,” I paused, turning back to Hale, “Where’s Min?”

“Jumped out the window.”

“What!?”

“Fox,” he said, simply, “She can stick a landing. You?”

I stared back at him, “I’m a little out of practice.”

The Collie whined and shook his head.

“Okay.”

Before I could tell what was going on, Hale scooped up both up onto his shoulders, the smell of sweaty horse managing to fill my nostrils over the smoke and, somehow only now did I start to gag.

“Put me down!”

“You’re going to want to stop kicking,” Hale replied, shattering a window along with the frame with a hoof, “Trust me.”

One leap off of a three story building, five minutes of digging an Equine’s hooves out from the mud, and a thirty minute dash away from a burning building later, we were in a field a few miles away from the town, staring back at the frontier outpost and the one, thick strand of smoke floating away into the heavens.

“There it all goes,” the Collie muttered, eyes downcast.

Wrapping an arm around his black-furred shoulder, I pulled him close, feeling his tail lightly twitch against my crotch, “It’ll be okay.”

“No...” he whispered, ears wilting, “I owe a lot of money to the League. I put...myself on collateral. If I can’t pay them back...”

“Hey, hey,” I turned him around, wiping a tear from his eye, brushing my palm against his white muzzle, “I won’t let them take you. We’ll be safe in the Marches.”

“But if they find me...”

“By the time they do, we’ll pay them back with interest,” I smiled confidently, holding my palm up to show off my tattoo, “Don’t you know who you’re traveling with?”

He looked to the side, uncertain.

Scratching him behind the ear, I told him, “I’m Astor Skinwolf. Don’t worry, I know a thing or two about collecting bounties and avoiding hunters. We’ll make enough back in no time.”

A smile grew on his lips.

“I’m Arleth. Tavern-keep,” he said, right ear twitching, “Former.”

I pressed my nose against his and he slurped at my lips in response, “Everything’ll be okay, Arleth.”

I felt his bulge press against my crotch. Only now did I realize he was still naked and we never had a chance to cuddle before evacuating. Reaching down, I stroked at the red head poking out of his cream sheath and…

“Done?”

Pulling away, I turned to see Hale, Mace in one hand and an Equine-sized shield in the other.

“Where the hell did you find that!?” I shouted, irate at having our moment interrupted.

“Bought it,” he said, “With the money.”

“What money?”

He looked around the empty, flat field surrounding us, as if there were spies hiding in the ankle-high, dried grass, “The money we got for robbing that ship and killing that Cougar.”

Stunned, I stared back at him; he likewise stared back down at me with his long face.

“Mril?”

“Yup.”

“I did that. I robbed his...” I stopped myself, counting in my head just how little treasures I walked out with, “I killed him! There was a bounty on him?”

“Yup. We blew him up.”

“I blew him up! I threw a cigar on the ground near some Ursine Mead and the whole place went...”

“No. Min lined the Mead barrels with gunpowder while I grabbed as much silver as I could,” he said, “You can’t blow up Ursine Mead with a cigar.”

“Okay, well, I still stabbed him in the throat!”

“Uh huh...”

“It’s true!”

“And I’m the Queen of All Wolves.”

“Fuck you.”

“Told you, I don’t like men.”

“Unless Min tells you to, right?”

Arleth stepped between us, putting a paw on each of our chests, “Can you guys cut it out? Please?”

I stared at my feet sheepishly.

“Besides, if you guys are so attracted to each other, I don’t mind a threesome.”

“Hey!” I shouted, “It’s not. Like. That!”

“Only if Min tells me to,” Hale muttered wryly, casting me a look so exaggeratedly erotic it was obviously fake. Equine humor?

Unable to try and decipher whether he was joking or not, I changed the subject, “Hale, you’re sure this is where Min said you’d meet?”

“Yes.”

“She’s not here.”

“I can see that.”

“Why did she leave like that anyway?”

“I wanted to go with her.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“She told me to make sure you got out.”

Something poked at my heart. Old feelings. Ones I couldn’t bury even as I felt new affection for the Collie at my side. When you’re with a girl like Min for so long, she leaves something behind in you.

“Guys,” Arleth sniffed at the air, “I think we’re in trouble.”

“What is it?” I whispered.”

“Felines,” he growled, “Three Lions, one Cougar, one Tiger. Male. Surrounding us. Closing in.”

“Shit,” I hissed, drawing my sword. Hale, likewise, readied his shield and mace.

Arleth inhaled, “And a Horse...”

“He’s right there,” I pointed to Hale, who silently grumbled under his breath.

“Four-legged,” he clarified, taking another deep breath, “There’s a Fox too. Female.”

“It can’t be...” Hale whispered.

Arleth lowered his voice, “Do you think she...”

“No,” me and Hale both replied in unison.

“But...”

“Quiet.”

I saw the white figure of a horse on the horizon, trotting towards us. It was not long before I made out the rider, a proud, striped Tiger with powerful muscles and two sheathed falchions at his hips. He turned the horse to strafe us and I got a glimpse of his companion, a naked, white fox clutching onto his chest from behind, fluffed tail trailing behind the horse.

“You’ve done well, my sweet vixen,” the Tiger purred, dismounting and leading the horse towards us.

“Anything for you, Master,” Minerva cooed, still sitting atop the horse, towering above her feline Master.

“Fortune smiles upon me,” he smiled, baring his massive fangs, “I find a white Fox, a white horse, and two fat bounties. Astor Skinwolf and the Equine who murdered Mril the Younger.”

“I killed Mril,” I corrected him, immediately receiving an annoyed glance from Hale, “Just stating the facts”

“No matter,” the Tiger waved a heavy paw, “Two fat bounties and...who’s that?” he pointed a claw at Arleth, prompting a whimper from the Collie.

“I suspect he’s the bed-warmer that my dear friend Astor took to his bed,” Min hissed, lashing her tail.

The Tiger purred, examining Arleth from a distance, “We’ll have some fun with him, won’t we boys?”

Emerging from the dry grass came a pack of Felines, just as Arleth had described: three Lions and a Cougar surrounding us. They were armed with spears for the most part, but the Cougar wielding a falchion much like the Tiger. Despite their poor arms, they were adorned with an assortment of scale and chain-mail, prompting the question of who they robbed that had Lion-sized masterwork armor, but not the weapons to go with it? I never got my answer.

“In fact, if you surrender now, maybe we can all have a little fun before we turn you all in. We’ll be gentle.”

The crowd laughed lecherously.

“Astor, we’ve got to run,” Arleth whispered with panic in my ear.

I looked once more at the vixen atop the horse. She glared back with violet eyes. I shook my head.

“She’s betrayed you and they’re going to...”

“No.”

“Astor!”

Rubbing at my palm, I felt a surge of strength coarse through my veins. Concentrating on that flow, I coerced it to expand and grow. I picked my target, the Cougar with the falchion (Mril really ruined Cougars for me.) and I laughed.

“Why would I ever surrender to someone whose slave controls him?”

“What?”

Chuckling, not deigning to give the Tiger eye contact, I continued, “You don’t even know how badly you’ve been played, do you? Give her a week and she’ll have you on a collar and leash begging for treats.”

“How dare you!” he snarled, stepping forward. Something rattled to the side at his rear, it looked like the telltale edge of a small crossbow swaying into view, “I’ll have you on your knees begging for me to cut your throat!”

“Uh huh,” I peered back with a grin, I couldn’t help myself, I had to see it happen, “With what swords?”

Both paws reached at his hips for hilts that were missing. Surprise registered on his face for a split second before Min drew its edge across his throat, sending a fountain of blood gushing out.

Fun times over. Time to finish this.

Slapping the ground with my palm, I forced the energy welling up inside to release itself through the tattoo and I launched myself forward. He never realized what hit him. Dropping the sword, I landed on the ground with a roll.

Scooping up the sword and shaking off the fragments of Cougar skull clinging to it, I turned to the left and saw a Lion with a bolt jutting out of his throat. It only took a quick peek towards Min, cocking a fresh bolt in her bow, to determine what happened. Scanning from left to right, I paused briefly to observe Hale disintegrating a Lion with his mace in a red mist, and quickly decided to magically launch myself to the right, towards the last remaining foe.

The world was a blur and it only cleared just in time to see the iron spearhead aimed at my forehead. I grabbed at the shaft, pulling it back with me as I flew through the air; only the sound of a shoulder violently popping alerted me to the fact that I actually made contact with my foe.

Rolling once against on the dusty plains, I threw myself to my feet and observed the situation: one Tiger with a slit throat, a Cougar missing his skull, a Lion choking to death on a bolt and another yowling on the dirt with a broken shoulder. The final Lion was unaccounted for, but I presumed if we spent a whole day reconstructing the bits and pieces smeared all over Hale, we’d find him, or at least a recognizable percent of him.

It was over.

Gasping for air, I slouched onto the ground, letting my sword fall to the ground. It never got easier, utilizing that much magic in a short period. That’s something no one in the world understood, skeptical or admiring, magic took effort; a lot.

Two arms wrapped around my neck, black palm-pads caressing my cheek.

“You were amazing, Astor.”

A wet nose nuzzled against my temple.

“Not really,” I muttered coolly, “Just doing what I was made to do.”

Peering back over Arleth’s shoulder, I saw Min and Hale in midst of wrestling their tongues together, her hips straddling his massive sheath. Not particularly desiring to see any more, I faced away.

“Still hurts, huh?” Arleth said, gently licking at the back of my neck.

“Yeah.”

“I think I can help.”

Sighing, I raised my hand and let it flop to the ground limply, “I don’t think I’m in good enough shape for your help.”

“Lie back.”

“I said...”

“Lie back.”

He pulled me and I fell back upon his bare chest, feeling his thin arms wrap around my chest. He gave me two long licks across the cheek, leaving a trail of saliva running to his lips and slid out from under me and took his place atop me, staring down at me from his long, white, muzzle. Like an animal atop its prey.

“Just sit back and I’ll take care of it,” he whispered, grinding his cream bulge against my crotch, sending waves of pleasure creeping across my thighs, “Just relax.”

“Mmm,” I groaned, straddling my hips against his, “Look, I just killed a bunch of...”

“One,” he said, peering behind him, “One’s still alive.”

“Oh.”

“Want him to join us?”

“No.”

My cock grew hard, pressing against my trousers. Sensing this, Arleth slid them down, revealing my rock-hard member. His cold nose sent shivers down my penis as he nuzzled it, lapping at the tip with his tongue.

Then he wrapped his tongue around it, sliding it up and down, slurping at the shaft. Groaning and moaning with joy, I grabbed at the scruff of his neck and pushed him down, taking my member in his mouth, nearly brushing it against his fangs, but never causing discomfort.

“Engh,” I moaned, tightening my grip as he sucked.

“You like it?”

“Fuck yeah.”

“Say it again.”

“Fuck yeah!” I shouted, spurting my load into his mouth, which he immediately began lapping it up as it he were drinking from a stream. When I finished, he gave me one last wipe with his tongue and shimmied his hips closer to my face with his red, knotted cock already fully out.

“My turn,” he muttered, stroking his cock slowly.

I’m not normally a fan of facials or swallowing, or whatever he had in mind, but I was willing to let him get away with it.

Sliding his padded fingers across his muscled cock faster and faster, he groaned as it throbbed in his grip. He was clearly already near the end before he began, and wasn’t long before his cock twitched and I felt warm cum wash over my face. I closed my eyes in response, only opening them when I left a long, moist tongue wash over my face and upon seeing my lovely Collie so close to my own face, I grabbed him by the back of the back and pulled his face close, pressing his lips against mine.

“Well, that was quite an ordeal, wasn’t it?” Min announced, goading her horse to trot in front of the group proudly. The surviving Lion, shoulder still misplaced despite our best efforts, ran clumsily as the lead conjoining his wrist bindings to the horse’s bit yanked him forward.

“You could say that,” I muttered bitterly, wiping at my sweaty brow.

“I can and I shall again. That was quite an ordeal,” she grinned, ears erect, “I do apologize, once again, for the trouble, but you’ll agree that it was worth it, allowing myself to be kidnapped by that beast and luring towards the bounty of a lifetime...”

Sighing, I spoke, “What was the bounty on them again?”

“One hundred gold a piece, two hundred for the leader, alive,” she snorted, peering down at the Lion, “With all of them dead except him, I suppose he’s the leader now, wouldn’t you say?”

I grunted in agreement.

“Astor, I must commend you on your choice in men,” she moaned, peering at Arleth, “Perhaps...would he be interesting in having a go with our Lion friend here? That would be...interesting.”

“No!” the Lion shouted, receiving a clawed kick in the face from Min in response.

“I’m only interesting in Astor,” Arleth murmured, nipping at my neck, “Sorry.”

“Moral, hm?” she said with a laugh, “Only one day and you seem to have met the perfect man. I don’t think he knows what he’s getting into. You know, Dog, he gets terribly jealous, hm?”

“What the hell are you talking about?” I demanded angrily.

“Please, Astor, you’ve been peering at Hale’s crotch ever since you saw us having sex. Get over yourself!”

“I have not!” I shouted, “I just happen to know you always have had an obsession with Horse cocks. I mean, you’re even riding a stallion right now!”

“Really?” she asked, leaning over in her saddle to take a peek at his bits, “I didn’t know that. But then, you’re the one paying attention...”

“Dammit, Min!”

And on and on we went, ironically towards the Ironhood Confederacy where, no doubt, there would be hundreds upon thousands of Hales for Min to make disparaging remarks about my manhood towards in comparison. I couldn’t hate her for it, not after the amount of time we’ve been together. I suppose that’s a weakness on my part. It didn’t matter, we had a team, our first bounty, and I had a new boyfriend, one that she couldn’t help but admit attraction towards.

Life was good.

Now, all I had to do was make sure I didn’t get banned from the Confederacy like every other Kingdom in the world.
