R-E-X: The Intervention
A young woman and her special dog have a week together alone in the house, not wasting the opportunity to engage in the fruits of their strange relationship.
But something is unfolding, a day the Sovereigns have been waiting decades for, the time to rise.
Summer 1975, twenty nine years after the R.E.X Experiment. St Petersburg air base, Russia.
“Ok dad, you won't be home till next week then?"
“Yes I understand, you have a very important job."
“Love you dad!" Lidiya hung up the phone, looking out the window of the modest house she and her father kept.
He was a captain in the Soviet air force, being called out east to inspect a new airbase. They were fortunate to live rich lives upon the base with many other families in the secure neighborhood. Their home overlooked the airfield miles away down by the coast.
Turning around the girl found her dog sitting patiently on the carpet, she took a step forward to give him a scratch on the chin.
“This is from dad, he says you gotta look after the house while he's gone." She smiled, the big dog panting as she rubbed his muzzle.
His name was Ivan, a caucasian shepherd mix of great size. He had ample, soft fur, an almost entirely white coat with red saddle markings. He weighed over one hundred and fifty pounds, sitting tall as his girl leaned only slightly to scratch him affectionately. He was imposing to any neer do well but to the girl he was just a big pup, her pup.
“Always here to serve, young miss." Came a voice from the dogs collar, a hidden speaker within it as the girl smirked at her special companion.
Ivan was a Sovereign, a dog of incredible mental capacity and among many whom worked in secret across the world. Only those closest to such agents knew their true nature, the canines appearing as a normal dog to everyone else.
Ivan was found by Lidiya when he was a young pup, a stray following her home from school. Having a soft spot for dogs himself her father let her keep the young pup, neither of them knowing of his unusual origin.
The young Ivan knew of his mission, he was among others who sought to place themselves as observers in the homes of important figures. There he was privy to special information and insights difficult to obtain otherwise.
The dog was very happy with his arrangement, Lidiya was a lovely girl and her father was kindhearted. Years into his new home Ivan revealed himself to the girl, shocking her when the young stray unveiled his true intelligence.
Lidiya knew what he was, knew what he was doing and did her best to help the faithful companion and special friend.
“And now we got some extra time in the house… so little to do..." The girl grinned, sauntering past the dog as she gave a purposeful sway of her hips, modest dress swaying against her knees as she walked.
Ivan followed her down the hall, eyes focused on those hips as her fingers reached for the buttons of her dress, snapping them one at a time.
“Soo boring… just a girl and her puppy, trapped together..." She said with a chuckle, dress falling to the floor as she stepped out of it, delicate panties clinging to her tight body, letting Ivan's eyes take her in.
“There are special services I may render upon an eager female..." Ivan spoke, licking his lips as he patiently followed behind, loving the teasing of the sultry girl.
“Mmm… what could those things be? Are they naughty?" She said coyly, taking a brief stop as she grabbed a towel from the laundry basket, draping it over one arm as she made her way to the bedroom.
Stepping slower the girl pulled at the undergarments, giving a wide wiggle as she worked them down her hips.
She tossed the panties aside with a quick kick before she continued forward, stepping into the bedroom. Her arousal flowed freely into the air, a special treat for the eager dog trailing behind her, eyes on those supple lips as she walked.
Lidiya was grinning wide, she loved having the house to herself, just her and Ivan to do whatever they pleased, however many times they pleased. Laying the towel down at the end of her bed the girl stood, running a finger up her delicate womanhood. The oozing arousal slicked her fingertip as she gave a chuckle and grabbed her blouse, lifting it over her head.
Ivan kept his eyes on the girl as he walked over to the other side of the room, jumping up as his paw grabbed at the open window and pulled it shut. The dog gave the girl a sly smile.
“Oh… oh yeah.." Lidiya giggled, tossing her top and bra aside as she stood completely bare to the dogs eyes.
Ivan licked his big lips, walking back over to her as the girl posed her thin body for him, thrusting her pert breasts upward as her brown hair touched her nude shoulders. The usually proper military daughter stripped bare for her secret lover as she smiled deviously to him. Lidiya had always been thin and tall among her peers, tight waist and small breasts even as she matured. Her smaller frame only complimented Ivans bulky, furry form, her thinner body sinking into the big dogs fur every night as they slept.
“So fine..." Ivan spoke, taking in the girls curves and the delicate lips nestled between those smooth thighs. Lips ready for his claiming.
“Ok big boy… do your worst..." Lidiya teased, leaning forward as she lay her upper body onto the bed, rear sticking out high as Ivan stopped behind her. His eyes focused on her lithe form, narrowing in on the open treasure laid bare for the mutt.
Lidiya let her long legs slide across the floor as she spread for him, rear thrusting high as she presented like a bitch in heat. She felt the big dogs breath against her presented pussy as he sampled her scent. Biting her lip Lidiya pressed down into the bed, bracing herself for the beast.
“Gladly..." Ivan taunted in a deep voice, wasting no time as he embraced the presenting girl.
“Mhhmmm…!" She moaned out from her clenched mouth, feeling the massives dogs paws hook around her hips and pull her into him.
Ivan mounted the girl with practiced accuracy, heavy cock mashing into the girl as he unsheathed into her wet pussy with a quick, firm hump.
“MMhh!!!" The vocal girl moaned, big dog on her back, his long cock pushed deep as she felt his forming knot slip inside. With a bestial grunt his first gush filled her waiting pussy as he pulsed within her.
Quickly pulling the girl's hips Ivan slammed their bodies together, savoring the brutal sensation as he reached deeper into the girl. She arched under him, succumbing to the beast.
With animalistic vigor Ivan's spine compressed around her smooth body, hips slamming against the girl as he made the rapid acceleration of canine breeding, all four paws clenching as he rutted the human.
“Uhhhhh..h..h..h…" She moaned with a wavering voice, her entire body vibrating with the power of his thrusts. Ivans fur warmed her backside, his weight pinning her as he drilled deep, sizeable cock already testing the girl's lithe body.
His hips were a blur, quick rounded thrusts pumping up into the girl as his knot pushed into her, her tight body fulfilling him. Every moment his cock was growing wider and knot growing larger. He gave a bestial huff as he looked down to the girl, her hands grasping at the sheets, mouth open wide in shocked pleasure.
“Ahhhh! aHH! AH!" She gasped, clinging to the bed as her hips vibrated with the big dog's thrusts, his large balls slapping against her. The girls smaller body was trapped helplessly under his power, just how she loved it. Inside she felt him filling her, his relentless motion never failing to hit her sweet spots, her smooth legs trembling as he held her tight.
“IVAN! OH! AHH! MMMMMMHHH! HARDER!" She moaned again, biting her lip as her eyes held wide, body on the edge as the big dogs knot filled her, pumping lewdly as her dripping pussy took all of him.
Ivan leaned his long neck down, large jaws opening against the girl's neck as his long tongue reached out. He sloppily licked her, powerful tongue slobbering over her as the girl moaned, feeling his teeth holding against her neck, his hot breath against her skin as he continued to pump.
“Cum… cum for me my sweet girl..." Ivan moaned over the collar, able to talk as his mouth held wide, licking sloppily against the squirming girl under him.
Ivan didn't skip a beat, his feral rhythm continuing as Lidiya pushed back against his reckless tongue, feeling the beast curled over her, strong paws like a vice on her supple thighs. She was in his power, unable to hold on another second as the dam within her burst, clenching as she came hard around his pumping knot.
“ERRH!!! FUCK! AHH! FU- AHh! Ughh…!" She gasped out incoherently, her young body gushing as she squirt at her peak. The fluid sprayed from her plugged lips, her body unable to contain the sudden explosion of pleasure.
At her climax the big dog reared his body back, pulling her hips even harder as he pumped into her cumming body, feeling her spray around his knot. His big cock was awash in their fluids, her body failing to contain it all as the lurid mixture poured down the girl's trembling thighs. Lidiya was a whimpering mess, little gasps and moans as she felt the overwhelming orgasm continue under the powerful dog.
Ughh..h..h..h…" She groaned, eyes unfocused as the pleasure seeped through her nerves, weakening her as Ivan continued to piston into her rear, paws locked like a vice as his knot held firm, its shape bulging from the girl's body as he reached his own peak.
“Yes… YES… TAKE IT!" Ivan spoke over the radio collar, letting the girl know his own pleasure as his hips slowed, jerking intermittently as he shot within her plugged body. Her flesh stretched with him, full cock and knot securely locked into the young woman.
He continued to grind into her, his rich cum joining the girls fluids as his knot corked them in, only trickles rolling down the girl's legs as she shuddered against the bed, reeling and panting from the frantic, bestial sex.
Finally his hips stopped, panting above her as he sighed out, deep in his beloved human once again.
He was lucky her own budding womanhood had corresponded with his own sexual maturity, easily able to convince the girl to fool around with him. It became almost natural after he revealed his ability to speak to her. The two formed a confident bond of secrecy as he spent many nights under her covers, lapping away as she bit down on the sheets, holding back her desperate moans.
They had been having intercourse for over a year now, the big dog being gentle at first as he tested her limits. He was pleased to find her limits wide. The girl now begged the big dog to mate her properly, to rut her as hard as he could. It was the dogs dream come true, such an amazing girl. Not the mention her delectable gift of gushing orgasms, a rare human trait Ivan was happy to induce, feeling her drool over his knot every time she came.
“Mmm… Mhhh..." Lidiya moaned under the dog, arms spread wide over the sheets as she pulled on them, arching against the mutt as he panted.
“It has been too long Lidiya..." He called out, eyes drooping as he held inside her, taking in the pumping pleasure from his loins.
“Yes… we have much to make up for..." She moaned, turning her head to look back to her beloved companion.
“I feel like laying down..." She then asked.
“You lead." The dog answered, paws shuffling as he prepared to move.
Carefully and slowly Lidiya crawled onto the bed, Ivan holding on as he carefully followed. His knot stretched her body, making the girl grunt as he held onto her during the short journey.
Finally she lay across the bed on her stomach, grabbing a pillow as she relaxed flat against the sheets. Ivan lay atop her whole body, his chin resting on her head as his fur covered the girl, cock still stuck in her upturned hips as the canines ceaseless pumping continued.
“Ivan?" She asked, turning back up to the big dog.
“Yes, young mistress?"
“You still promise you'll give me pups?"
“When the time comes I'll rut you all day, breed you until you're bursting with my pups." Ivan happily answered. He knew it wasn't really a question from her, his intention had been clearly stated before. This was just one of the sultry topics that made the girl giddy, another way to tease her.
“Like a bitch in heat? I won't be able to resist my big stud..." She moaned, an eager hand reaching down her body, finding her stretched lips as she rubbed the back of the big dogs knot, always marveling at how it felt inside her.
“How many times will you breed me…? How many times will you knot me..." She moaned, a finger sliding to her clit, flicking the tender flesh as she gasped under the dog, clenching around his bulging knot.
“I'll breed you till my hips are sore, I'll slam you as you cry out my name… a proper bitch always takes the knot." He groaned, clenching his teeth as the girls muscles squeezed his sensitive glans, her smaller body struggling bellow his massive weight.
Ivans paws tugged on the girl's hips again, pulling her up into him as the big dog began slowly gyrating atop her, stretching her well stuffed pussy.
“Mmm… my body is yours… knot me all day… mmm..." She moaned, closing her eyes as her pleasure surged back up, the long need of her body demanding another peak.
“Oh? Does my girl need to cum again? Does she want to squeeze my big knot?" Ivan tease, big muzzle hanging beside her face, his entire form dominating her in the way that made her lose it.
“Yes… make me… Let me... feel it!" She begged, nimble finger circling her clit, thrusting back into Ivan's slow pumps as the tightness of their bodies grew more desperate.
Ivan made high arcs with his hips, slamming their combined bodies into the mattress as the bed frame creaked loudly on each hit. He gathered momentum, letting it build as he bounced her hips on the bed, big powerful slams as their flesh hugged tightly. He continued to increase the pace, riding the girl like a bucking bronco as she felt it coming again.
“P-please… please!" she called out, body reaching her limit as she felt her hips slammed down into the mattress over and over.
“Sing for me... " Ivan groaned, nose pressed against her head as he breathed in long and hard, scenting his beloved human as she trembled once again.
“AhHHHh! Ahhh! Nnhh! hhhhhhhhhhhhh…!" Came a long whine from the girl, her fluid gushing in a wide spray from between her legs, Ivans knot giving wet squelches as he gently pumped into the cumming girl. Her mouth now held agape, desperately gasping as the pleasure washed over her again, letting herself be taken away by the amazing animal.
“Oh Ivan… oh my big puppy… ahh..." She breathlessly called, tense muscles relaxing as she sunk into the mattress, Ivans weight seeming greater than ever as her nerves gave little quakes from her second peak.
“My sweet flower." Ivan affectionately called, now licking the back of the girl's neck, keeping his own breathing steady as his body continued to squirt.
“My big, handsome boy." Lidiya called back, reaching her tired hand to pet the big fluffy dog's face.
The two relaxed down again, waiting out Ivan's knot as the lazy day continued on.
Finally popping free Ivan stood, large cock drooling over the girl as their fluids gushed out onto the strategically placed towel.
“Well I could go for lunch, how bout you?" Lidiya asked, casually pulling her top back on as she wiped her soaked groin with the towel.
“After you." Ivan said, jumping down from the bed as he headed off down the hall. the girl followed, cheekily forgoing her panties as she let the air pass between her thighs. She glanced at Ivan's heavy balls dangling under his wagging tail, letting her eyes focus on him as she smiled, this was going to be a good day.
Later that evening.
The girls forearms slammed into the couch cushions. She wore only a loose night shirt, lower body bare as the familiar weight of the big dog fell upon her back.
“Don't tease the dog, my dear… you know how he gets..." Ivan taunted to her, locking around the girl's hips, pushing his cock into her as he began to pound the smaller girl.
He had wasted no time, acting just as any horny mutt does when a pretty female presents opportunity.
“Mmm… I...I'm s-such a b-bad g-girl…" Lidiya moaned, voice wavering as her body rocked under Ivan's slamming body.
“What's that? Harder?" He taunted again, exploiting the advantage of speaking through the collar, big lungs pumping as he panted like the sexual beast he was.
“Ughhh..." Lidiya moaned, feeling Ivan speed up, overtaking her on the couch.
Lidiya loved to be taken like a beast, to let her inhibitions down and let her deepest desires dictate her actions with the dog.
She had casually walked by him, and idle pet as they greeted each other. But moments later she was combing through the big dogs fur, kissing him sloppily until her body hit the floor, leaning over the couch as she thrust her bare body to him, begging to be claimed.
It was the greatest thrill, to just be two primal creatures grasping and thrusting together, letting those deep dark feelings bring the intimate pair together in messy, primal sex.
Paws wrapped around her slim hips he pushed her down against the couch, canine cock slamming into her pussy as he claimed her like a true feral mutt.
“MHHHphhh..." She moaned out, feeling completely uninhibited with the big mutt. She had learned quickly the special dog was as horny as she was, telling him her secret desires and moaning his name when he fulfilled them.
Lidiya braced against the couch, thin arms pushing against the backrest as she thrust her body back into Ivan's rapidly undulating hips. The dog's body curled around her, hugging so tight as he overpowered the girl. The dogs knot was already pushed deep, stretching and rubbing into the girls aroused body as she was rendered helpless to do anything but brace for the oncoming peak, gasping as she vibrated under his power.
“I'm gonna cum so hard in you… lock that lovely body right up." The lusty dog taunted, pulling harder against the girl's hips as he felt his knot reaching its peak, her body bulging at his girth.
Lidiya felt her knees leave the ground, Ivan holding her weight as he pulled her up into him, she was at his complete mercy.
“Ivan… oh Ivan… B-big b-boy..." She moaned, folding her legs high as she let him hold her aloft. She loved when he did this, holding her with his paws, showing his strength and dexterity as she clung to him above the ground. She let her legs wobble in the air, almost flying as Ivan took her away, only feeling the frantic mashing of their bodies, the wet slide of his cock inside her.
“Cum for me… cum for me, princess..." Ivan moaned to her, feeling the telltale trembling of her body.
“Uhhh… UHH!!!" She screamed out, long legs suddenly springing back into the air as Ivan threw her over the peak, his big cock pumping into her claimed body.
“Nnnn!! " the girl uttered more, losing breath as she gasped against the fabric of the couch. Her body lost control, squirting hard over the big dogs knot as her mind went wild.
Pushing against Ivan her bare feet stretched, gracing the hardwood floor as she felt Ivans warm cum and her overflowing fluids trickling down her thighs. Ivan's pumping came to a slow, panting above Lidiya as her legs grew tired, falling to the floor as Ivan held her aloft for a few more moments.
The big dog let his own curled body relax, the continued pleasure of his pumping cock making his motions slower as he set the girl back down to her knees.
Letting go of her hips he lifted his leg, almost pirouetting as he turned the tie, letting his large cock hold deep in the girl as he twisted about.
Her hips pushed higher, helping meet the big dogs height atop the couch as she hung from his cock.
His fluffy tail fell onto her butt, making the girl smile as she looked back, rear to rear with her canine lover.
“Mmm… tieing with your bitch?"
“Nothing better in the world." He exclaimed, holding his large head high as he looked back to her.
Lidiya reached down, bending a bit as she found the big dogs balls resting atop her bottom. Her delicate fingers rubbed his sack, feeling the dull pumping of his canine body within him and within her.
“You human girls… bending over for any well hung mutt..."
“Only you big boy..."
“I know..." Ivan cooed, giving a doggy smile back to the girl as she continued to rub his sizeable balls.
Minutes later Ivan curled around himself, wide tongue lapping at the intimate connection with the girl as he began to loosen.
Slipping free he ran his tongue over himself and the girls stretched lips, slurping up their mess as the girl held her rear high, letting the big dog lick into her stretched pussy.
He held, big tongue probing and cleaning the girl as he savored her as only a dog could ever know.
“Thanks, I'll get the mop for the rest." She smirked, raising her bottomless self off the couch as she eyed the small puddle left below them.
Ivan panted lightly, unable to keep his eyes from following the girls rounded rear, walking off bottomless through the house, she was such a tease, and she knew it.
“I will be in the study for some time Lidiya." The big dog announced, peeling his mind from the girls tempting body and onto other tasks.
Ivan pushed open the heavy door as he walked to her father's study and the big radio located there.
The big shepherd leapt up into the chair, leaning back as he reached out a paw, flipping a switch before dialing into the secure channel.
Ivans primary mission here was monitoring the secure channels Lidiya's father had access to as an air captain. It only took the big dog watching the man once to know the subtle passcode to the radio.
Lidiya knew what he was doing, and more importantly she knew why he was doing it, she had no qualms with his listening.
Pulling the large headphones across the table Ivan slipped them onto his canine neck, easily listening with his large ears. The mundane chatter of the radio droned in his mind as he drifted off.
Ivan leaned back in the chair, giving a satisfied grunt as he relaxed from the vigorous lovemaking with his beloved girl. He was so very fortunate to have her as a companion, a more than willing sexual partner to the young Sovereign.
Sitting in the chair with his hind legs sticking out the big dog rubbed his wide sheath with a paw pad. Pushing against his well worn genitals the dog sighed, thinking about her again. She was something special to him. He just wished he could settle down with her, to not hide what he was, or what they were together. But he was patient for now, performing his duty as a listener and as a lover.
Lidiya always despaired when Ivan held back from her now and then, refusing to mate whenever he detected her ovulations, careful to keep the girl safe. She sometimes begged for him to do it anyway, but he knew better for them both, letting tongues and hands do the work until she was clear. They could not afford an unexplainable pregnancy to compromise her, or even him if his nature was somehow revealed. The Kremlin had some clues there was something abnormal going on in the wide country, but did not know the extent of the Sovereign presence and influence upon their people.
The dog was relaxing in the big chair, listening to the expected chatter as something unusual caught his attention.
He leaned forward, forgetting everything else as he paused to listen, this was huge.
Ivan threw the headphones off, dropping to all fours as he ran into Lidiya's room. Under her bed he grabbed the inconspicuous shortwave radio and held down the transmitter. He gave a quick series of barks and grunts, an encoded urgent broadcast informing the local Sovereign enclave about what was going to happen.
Lidiya looked into the room, a worried look on her face as he finished the message. Ivan dropped the radio to the floor as he turned to the girl, a somber look upon him.
“Whats wrong? What's happening?" She asked.
“Lidiya, get dressed, it has begun...."
“Oh no… Oh no... are you sure?"
“I am deathly serious, the day is upon us." The dog confidently announced.
Lidiya jumped to action, tearing through her dresser as she quickly struggled to get dressed, feeling her heart beating fast.
Straightening her blouse she stepped out of her room, Ivan craning his neck to listen to the off the hook radio.
“Whats happening? How long?" She asked, standing behind him.
“Ground fighting started, it won't last long..." He spoke, hearing the heavy bombers calling out their targets as they engaged the western forces.
Not many had seen it coming, a small skirmish that erupted into a larger hail storm of confusion and vitriol on either side. And now it was the start of a chain reaction, fears and paranoia running rampant as the true extent of the conflict was lost among the immediate clashing.
Even Lidiya could hear the cranked up radio from the door, frantic yelling as a pilot called out the first explosion, followed by another as the fighters and innocents on the ground were caught off guard.
“What about dad… " Lidiya cried out.
“They already called the silent evacuation, he and all the key government and military are already moving underground." He spoke of the secret plan to let the most important people bunker first incase of possible nuclear exchange, the plan to keep the fighting going as long as possible. An absurd notion.
“We have a bit before everyone else knows… before the sirens start." Ivan said, walking away from the radio as the direction of the events were clear.
“What should we do now?" Lidiya asked, following the big dog as he headed to their front door.
“We must be strong, these people will need hope." Ivan spoke, easily flicking open the door as they walked outside.
It was a normal looking day, a little balmy in the russian summer. The grass of the well kept military family lawns were an emerald stretch around the hillside neighborhood. A few people stood outside, confused as the sound of jet after jet launched from the base bellow. A few more people rushed their families into a private car, having been clued in as they tried to beat the rush, to get as far away from the doomed base and city as possible in a desperate gamble to keep their family alive.
Lidiya breathed in purposely, reaching the end of their lawn as Ivan stood at her side.
“Steel yourself my dear, this is going to be a difficult time."
“I am ready, she said, holding her head high as they watched the naive world wake to the reality that was now looming down upon it."
Across the valley the sirens finally sounded, the shrill sound heralding the end as it was punctuated by the roar of a nearby missile silo opening, fire belching up as the massive rocket flew into the sky.
She watched it soar away, skin tingling as the world itself seemed to tremble at the launch. It was then joined by dozens of other streaks across the valley and thousands across the country. She knew what was in those rockets, each carrying almost a hundred high yield payloads. Decades of the arms race made them larger, deadlier, their weapons greater than anything ever before. Mutually assured destruction became mutually assured annihilation, the promise of a toxic choking death to the world.
Panic set in across the neighborhood as yells and screams called out across the houses. families not already moving now ran out of their homes as they rushed to the bunker at the bottom of the hill. Others just watched the sky, succumbing to utter despair as they accepted their pathetic fate and slumped to the ground, waiting for the inevitable.
“So this is what the end of the world looks like..." Lidiya said, casually walking down the road with Ivan as they stayed clear of the panicked crowds, just watching it all unfold like some terrible nightmare.
“It is unnerving, I must admit. The despair is crushing..." The Sovereign spoke over the radio collar, watching the grief stricken human neighbors he had come to know over the years.
They reached the bunker, seeing throngs of people pushing forward, but the door was locked shut. Some men banged on the heavy metal seal, screaming curses at those inside. They were already full, key personnel only.
The crowd was quivering, some people now running over the hill in animalistic panic as the roar of another rocket thundered overhead.
Men women and children huddled together, lost in utter despair as babies cried in the maelstrom. It was all over, every hope and dream shattered as they faced their doom.
In their despair the group became eerily silent, a few quietly praying as they waited for the end.
Seizing the moment Ivan lept onto a stack of crates, overlooking the lost crowd as he addressed them, raising his artificial voice high.
“Comrades! Forgotten people of the world!" He called out through the radio collar as people confusingly looked up, seeing the large dog almost smiling down to them.
“Do not despair! I, Ivan of the Sovereign people am here with you! We have waited long in the shadows, but now we shall emerge!"
The crowd was dumbfounded, now realizing it was indeed Ivan, the dog from down the street that was addressing them.
“The Sovereign's decree the world shall not end this day! We shall tear the fire from the sky and let tomorrow dawn!"
“Vikor the savior of hope is coming! The Russian people will rise with him! Fear not this day! Rejoice! For the dawn tomorrow will be the brightest in all of history! " He shouted, speaking of the fabled lupine blooded Sovereign that had become a legend in the USSR. He Confounded the military and government at every turn as tales of his heroic deeds spread quickly across the land. Many isolated places in the wide country knew he was real, working hard to prepare for this day. He was one of many, but he was the figurehead and the speaker of the Sovereigns of the Russian wilderness.
The ground confrontation had erupted into chaos, the armies struggling to position and fight, failing as the battlefield became a toxic wasteland. Explosion after explosion decimated the fighters as morale broke, soldiers fleeing as radiation demolished their bodies, hope draining from them as the reality of the nuclear age came to full bear.
Short range missiles streaked across, uncaring to the lives they quickly ended as eastern europe exploded into world war three. It spread quickly, paranoia and mutual terror letting fly the entire arsenal of the world. Every pre ordained target had its payload streaking across the sky, enough firepower to destroy the planet ten times over.
Down bellow the world panicked, governments and militaries rushed to their bunkers, common people left to their doom. The world woefully unprepared to face the reality of such destruction.
The entirety of the human race faced their death, every structure and security people once had now crumbled away. They were doomed, their hopes for the future gone, it was all over, within a few short hours it all would be over.
Across the globe the entire earth seemed to shake, shuttering as every light blinked and turned dark. People braced for the end, waiting for the roar of death to descend upon them.
But the silence held, an unearthly calm settling over everything. People still cowered, waiting for the end that wouldn't come.
Across the globe thuds of the missiles came raining down, inert pieces of metal smashing impotently into the earth as their payloads failed to detonate.
Confusion settled into those who remained above ground. People looked out their windows and heard the birds singing blissfully unaware, the cities and towns eerily quiet as the sirens silenced. But above in the sky, there was something else.
Two miles below ground, US Government “Persistence" bunker #5.
They were designed as the last bastion for american life, tucked deep underground and stocked with supplies for at least a hundred years. The president, the rest of the administration and their escorts were whisked away to this bunker at the first sign of danger. President Brandon did not even have a chance to order the retaliation, the cogs of war already turning as he was rushed to safety. Last they saw the radar was lighting up as thousands of missiles launched across the globe.
They planned to command what was left of the military from inside, ready to fight off a possible land invasion and take the fight back to the Russians.
But before long the ground shook, the screens blinking out as the bases generator failed. They were dumbfounded, the base was supposed to be secure and self sufficient, a safe comfortable vault to wait out the war. But everything across the board was failing, the men resorting to chemical lights as they stumbled in the dark.
After most of a day's work they got the backup generator working again, only keeping the most critical systems online as much of the facility was left dark.
The sensors, radios and other eyes to the outside world were gone, unable to revive the communications as they accepted they were not going to be able to fight on, falling back to plan B, survival at any cost.
Morale plummeted after only a few days, the reality of it all setting in. Many had been separated from family, now facing a lifetime underground, not even sure what had befallen those left above.
Even President Brandon suffered as much. His wife, his daughter and grandchildren were up north making a humanitarian trip when the sirens sounded. He lost contact with them as they rushed to the nearest fallout shelter, the ground shaking as he was left to assume the worst.
And now this was their reality, they would need to spend years down here, the surface far too hot for them to return. The prospect was harrowing, everything was already going wrong, how could they expect to last decades down here? How could they stand to go on, scraping by in the dark cave as the world burned above? Why did it have to come to this.
Three weeks passed, the most stalwart members of the bunker trying to keep morale going in the face of utter despair. They were like zombies, going through the motions of life as they felt detached, contemplating the unthinkable as hope drained from them.
Not much changed until one of the soldiers walking by the main entrance reported a noise outside the door. It was thirty feet of solid steel, but he swore there was someone knocking. It was immediately blamed on paranoia, until his staff sergeant heard it too, the noise growing as their nerves wavered. What the hell could it be?
Twenty minutes later the door was glowing hot, the sound now clearly audible as heavy drilling bore through the steel. A wave of panic filled the survivors, was it the Soviets? Here to end them? Had they lost the war, How?
The soldiers crouched in cover, sights pointed to the door as they waited, watching as the door seemed to be disassembled from within, the massive locking mechanisms torn apart as the metal glowed in the dark, molten material falling to the cold floor. Minutes later the sound ended, the metal cooling quickly as the door suddenly lurched, some massive power pulling it open as steam rose from the mutilated doorway.
Out of the mist came a single object, floating above the ground. It was like a squid, many long tendrils hanging down from a solid shape with small rotors holding it aloft in each corner of its oval body.
The men stared at it, frightened as it came to a quick halt, a synthetic voice speaking up.
“Greetings, human survivors. We wish to--"
“OPEN FIRE!" The panicked sergeant shouted, pointing to the alien device.
The soldiers obliged, squeezing down on their rifles, but something was wrong. The triggers of their guns would not even budge, almost as if they were welded into the firearm.
“Fire! What are you waiting for!?" He shouted again, confused as the men grabbed at their weapons, not even able to pull back the slides as their guns were revealed as inert lumps of metal.
The sergeant now sat stunned, having pulled out his own side arm to the same effect.
“Charge! to the last man!" He shouted, throwing his defunct revolver at the device, watching it plink off the metal hide of the robotic invader.
“This is an unwise course of action." Called back a dispassionate voice, watching as dozens of frightened men charged, wielding their rifles like clubs.
Its tendrils rose up in defense, grasping the rifles as they swung down upon it, then the other long thin fingers of the device wrapped around arms and legs as several men fell to the ground. But more soldiers came, heavy rifles bashing down onto the invader as it stumbled in the air, still holding onto the men as it gripped with unusual strength.
Bursting out of the cloud came dozens more robots, reaching out and grappling with the men as some of the soldiers fled, covering their heads as panic filled the air. The men held by the robots struggled, screaming out as electric shocks zapped through them, unable to free themselves.
The sergeant was surprised when one robot flew directly to him, long tendrils wrapping around his arms, forcing them behind his back. The older man fell to his knees as the remaining soldiers retreated deeper into the facility.
“Stay calm, do not fight." The robot spoke again, its voice now reverberating through every device as their chorus filled the room, even more robots flying in as they secured the area.
The men on the ground stopped fighting, suddenly feeling the synthetic fingers loosen their grip on them, letting the men breathe as they stayed quiet, not wanting to feel that pain again.
“Aggression will not be tolerated, please collect yourselves." The chorus of robots called out, the things relaxing as the remaining men huddled in shocked silence, crawling away as they accepted defeat, hardly having the morale to fight in the first place.
“Bastards!" called out the defeated sergeant, arms bound behind him until he felt the grip relax, the large alien robot still hovering close by, at the ready to reprimand him.
His eyes went wide again, noticing a number of creatures stepping into the room along with the robots. They were Sovereigns, clad in their sealed suits, large riffles of unknown design held in their hands. The leader of the group spoke, his voice through the crackle of a radio.
“Bring forth President Brandon and your other leaders."
“Over my dead body!" The sergeant yelled, never having given up a fight in his life.
“Do not be so morbid, we only need to speak, it is imperative."
“You have thirty minutes, or we shall come and get him." A second voice joined alongside the first.
“Deliver the message. We shall convene in the foyer when you are prepared." The tall creature spoke, standing patiently as the man scrambled to his feet, following the last of the soldiers out the door as the creatures watched silently.
President Brandon stood in the large foyer waiting for the uninvited guests. All around the hall american flags hung, swaying in the cold dark of the beleaguered bunker. He had a unkempt beard, looking haggard and beaten like many of the others, struggling to keep going.
He waited along with his secret service, the well trained men ready to face any threat even as their weapons proved useless. Others stood behind, the vice president, chief of staff and other cabinet members, all waiting with baited breath as a procession was heard approaching.
The wide doors swung open, the strange flying robots entering as they held the doors wide.
Out of the doorway a mechanical clunking was heard, a large, round shape appearing through the lit entryway.
It was a large robotic walker, standing six feet tall with a large round body. Two arms held to the side, walking on mechanical legs. The enclosed body was smooth and peerless as it strode, a mechanical sound at every step.
It was flanked by half a dozen tall figures, seven to eight feet tall. They wore advanced looking suits, peerless glass domes on their heads. Two of them held long rifle like weapons, containing some unknown power as they stopped at the doorway, holding back as they watched over the scene.
The men at hand stared at the robots, the weapons and suits. The technology was unlike anything they had ever seen. They dared not move, watching as they realized they had no power, helpless to whatever these creatures wanted.
The spherical robot continued with the four others, stopping in front of the president as its four escorts stood at attention, long arms behind their backs as they waited.
The robot stepped forward, looking directly to the president as his loyal secret service jumped in front of him, guarding him as the unknown threat loomed so close.
“Enough! Let me face this god damnit! Let me atleast do this!" Brandon shouted, feeling impotent and frustrated as he struggled against his own guards. He was long tired of hiding, if this was his end let him face it with some dignity. The men obeyed, stepping back, but keeping an eye on the creature before them.
“Humans, thank you for agreeing to this important meeting, let us dispense with the formalities." The robotic thing spoke, a deep male voice coming from the speakers. It held in a casual stance as it seemed to access the scene.
“Who the hell are you? Why have you attacked this bunker?!" Brandon stood tall, trying to make some last stand against the threat.
“Hasty, ill sighted and violent, we knew to expect as much from you." It answered, unphased by the accusation.
“Like cornered animals you lashed out, desperate with fear. That's why we sent the drones first, but I see you are far more corrigible now. "
“But pardon me, we are the Sovereign Contingent. We are here to make our official first contact with you. Reginald Brandon of the united states."
The crowd began whispering behind the president, everyone had heard of the stories about the Sovereigns, but few thought they could be real, was this really them?
“What is your name? What the hell are you?" Brandon said, staring at the cold looking robot, what was it hiding?
“Who am I?" The robotic thing perked up, gesturing back to itself as it took the opportunity.
“It has been almost thirty years since we last met, I say the tables have turned quite a bit..."
Brandon held up and eyebrow, mind trying to catch up with the last statement as the thing rolled forward with the conversation.
“You see, In his earlier days Major Brandon was quite busy. Some rather questionable undertakings to his name."
“You oversaw projects to kidnap forgotten youths from off the street, they faced grisly ends in the lab. The project was buried and forgotten, but not by me..."
“Preposterous! I have never done such things! This is slander!" He shouted back, confident in himself, kidnapping kids? it was absurd!
“Really? I have always wondered… if you would even remember me..." The robot spoke, the round shape of its body suddenly splitting, beginning to open as its pilot was revealed sitting inside.
Rex comfortably sat up in the robot. He leaned forward, paws over the edge of the vehicle as his fur showed the signs of age. He was now thirty years old, the longest living dog in the world. The experiment had granted him unnatural longevity. He and his feral children expected to live over 60 years, but the abuse and strain on Rex's once mundane body let the dog feel his age, hips sore as he rode about in the robot device. The suit gave him comfort and also flexability, now having hands to work with. Several cords hung from the back of his head, the crude setup necessary to let him feel and control the machine like it was his own body.
At their fathers reveal the other Sovereigns reached up and opened their faceplates, revealing several mutty breeds of upright dog looming over the humans. Their faces held in a serious confidence, they were adept combatants ready to spring to action to defend their beloved father from these animals if they dared try anything.
“What in gods name..." Brandon exclaimed, staring back to the ageing shepherd mutt.
“Is this a joke?!?" The sergeant yelled out, looking to the dogs that had just brought him and his soldiers to their knees.
“You are speaking to the canine before you." Rex spoke, mouth unmoving but paw pointing to himself as he made the surreal scene clear to all present.
The crowd whispered among each other, in disbelief as they saw the species of their invaders.
“And yes, I am actually a dog, born in these united states. I used to scavenge from the garbage, quite the rags to riches story don't you think?" Rex gloated, sitting atop his robotic walker, the dog now wielding the greatest power on the earth.
Brandon was dumbfounded, speechless as he and the others stared back to the proud looking mutt.
“I was your prized subject, a wandering vagrant from chicago. Dozens of my peers and family met terrible fates under your orders before me… but I was the last."
Brandons eyes lit up, suddenly remembering who he was looking at. How could it be? How could this have slipped through?
“My name was Rex, the only name I was ever given. But to my children I am the all father, the genesis of it all."
Rex sat back, watching as Brandon and the crowd gawked at him, realizing they had been bested by a mutt. Rex couldn't help but let a sly smile cross his long muzzle.
“Funny how selectively you value life, as a dog I was just a resource, no court in the land would bat an eye, open season." He quipped, mocking the humans disregard for his life before, now looking helpless before him.
“Just a lesser creature, crawling before you... You knew nothing of my mind, my fears and pleas. Against your tricks and technology I didn't stand a chance."
“People like you so easily look down on such creatures, uncaring and cruel as we struggle helplessly against you. Upon my awakening you looked down on me and I naively whined up to you, begging for mercy... I was given none…" Rex snarled, letting his ageing teeth flash to the crowd, expressing frustrations he had been waiting decades to unleash.
The crowd was getting visibly nervous, realizing what this could mean for all of them.
One man broke order and rushed forward, hands clasp as he was nearly in tears.
“Please! We had no knowledge of this, many despise of such treatments. We are so very sorry! We can talk we will-"
“I know of your species variance, I know of you well. Do not despair." Rex called out to interrupt the blubbering man, a few others pulling him back to help calm him. At that the scene refocused onto Brandon.
Brandon just stared back to Rex, his mind now remembering things in greater detail.
“That day you said… 'get everything you can out of this one' gloating over me. I heard and understood every word." Rex said, still remembering that day well.
“A very nice way to make your species first contact with another intelligence. Torture and exploitation. Fitting, don't you think?"
“The lab… you..." Brandon stammered out, remembering back to those days.
“Correct, I killed the heartless bastards, burned the archive and made it look like a safety failure." Rex spoke, shaking his head at the senseless destruction that had perpetuated the lab.
“I had little choice, if any of you knew I was alive and had escaped you would realize what I was, you would hunt me down mercilessly. I could never let you know, if I was ever to find peace in my life."
“If you suspected my great intelligence you would have never let me rest, my life an extended hell until you discarded my battered corpse."
"And... if you learned of my real intelligence you would have killed me on the spot, knowing what I was capable of doing...."
“To be honest, I hated you, all of you. When I had slipped free of you I planned my vengeance, what I might do to your species to save my own… my how time can change things."
“And now you have seen the end of your world, rather fitting that I would find you at the end of it all, the perfect example of human folly."
“You saw the precarious position of your species, and yet you trundled forward, casting your entire planet into oblivion. What do you have to say for yourself?"
“We had no goddamn choice! the soviets… I would rather die than hand the world to those bastards, we had to!"
“Defiant till the end… Blind to the intricacies and choices set before you… how typically human."
“No doubt you have contemplated it… the fact that you are the last of your species. The dreams of your people shattered, the future… gone."
“Never would there be another cool summer's day… Never a love, or a child, never again a hopeful eye looking to the skies. The dead earth a monument to your utter, inexcusable failure." Rex said with deathly serious eyes. The dog could see the sorrow underlying the man's defiance.
“Did you have a hand in this? Did you want it all destroyed because of what we did?" Reginald asked, feeling a bit more powerless before the mutt.
“No, Brandon. Human hands brought the world to its knees. I simply waited, preparing for this critical moment." Rex corrected, having expected such accusations. If Rex wanted humans dead waves of viruses would have wiped them away years ago, a much more elegant way to deal with a dangerous species.
“But do not fret, you are not to blame for the end, you were simply the foolish sod at the short end of the chain, just as blind as every short sighted human mind that brought you into this oblivion."
“Have you come to gloat? To end me personally? To snuff us out?!" Brandon growled, feeling the dog staring down to him.
“I have come to deliver you into a new world, one where men like you no longer threaten civilization. Your reign is over."
“And yours begins?! America does not bow to tyrants!" Brandon shouted back to the mutt, the futility in his voice evident to the calculated dog.
“A reasonable fear. Your history is littered with the exploits of the powerful, blood, tears and agony at the hands of the wicked, the foolish and the ignorant. You are your own worst enemy."
“Even your own governance teetered on a knife's edge, blind ideals, power and self interests battering into one another to form some semblance of progress. Until it all fell apart, and now we are here to pick up the pieces."
“We are something altogether new, something humans have never dealt with, beings greater than yourself.“
“Any brute can crush the weak underfoot, to demand praise when they deserve none. It's something altogether different to stand so high above that those bellow strive to follow, to bask in the glory you hold, to lead them higher than ever before."
“A golden age lays before you, all you need to do is give up the one thing that men like you yearn for, power."
“Now.. Let me show you something." Rex spoke, his robotic hand now holding a strange device as he reached out to Brandon with it.
Brandon took a step back as he saw Rex reaching towards him. But the flat device suddenly jumped out of his robotic hand as it snapped to Brandon's forehead, not letting the man react as time around him seemed to slow. He looked down as the device clung to him for a slowing moment, the unbreaking stare of the shepherd mutt seeming to fill his mind.
And then he fell forward, mind spinning until he felt himself walking on all fours down a street, unable to control the scene as he watched and felt in unfold. He was not himself, but felt everything as if he was. It was a summer day in the city, the pavement warm underfoot, strange unrecognizable sensations rushing through his mind.
Then suddenly the world around him shifted, he was strapped to a table, a sharp instrument stabbing into his side as he cried out, panicking as he forgot himself. The pain felt so very real, wincing and pulling back as he futilely fought against his binds.
Then suddenly time jumped. He was inside the dreaded device, his body crying out in the most incredible pain imaginable. He twisted and screamed, clawing at the table as the binds held firm.
He felt as if his skin was melting away, terrible energy passing over him as every cell within cried in agony.
“HELP! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SOMEONE HELP ME!" He screamed out, trying to dislodge the nightmare from his mind, but it held, every second an eternity as his mind numbed, unable to form coherent thoughts. He continued to cry out with a muffled voice, but no one came, trapped in the uncaring machine.
Then suddenly it vanished, nerves still jittering as he felt a fist strike his jaw. His body was once again bound and helpless as he peered back into the frustrated eyes of the lab supervisor he himself had chosen decades ago. The pain of the punch seemed dull to what he had felt before, now feeling his own fists ball up in anger as he braced for the next.
Before the next punch landed the scene suddenly changed. A young woman lay against him, nude and beautiful. He felt his body falling into the familiar emotions of his youth, pressing against her as they kissed passionately, bodies close in intimacy as he joined with her, lithe arms wrapping around him as the feeling of warmth rushed through him.
Then time seemed to speed forward, images of his children, squirming little pups of unusual shape. His mind had little time to process until they turned into upright canines, tall and wise as the family grew. There were dozens of them, then hundreds then thousands standing together, thoughts and images seeming to fly through the air as he looked out upon the busy laboratories and massive shipyards of the Sovereign fleet. They were inumerous, their combined power awe inspiring.
Then he was walking into a dark, dusty room, before him was himself, President Brandon haggard and frightened as time suddenly snapped into focus. He seemed to fly back into his own head as he found himself on his knees, gasping for breath as he heard footsteps rush to his side, the device now falling to the ground before him as if only a moment had passed.
His lungs gasped desperately as he felt his own body again, as if waking from a vivid dream.
“Sir! Are you alright!" Yelled his bodyguard, shaking him as Brandon tried to collect himself. The guards surrounded him, body's shielding the man as he sat up.
Rex and his own escort had stepped back, on guard as he waited to see the results of his handiwork.
“Im… ok…" he said, staying kneeling as he caught his breath, wiping a drop of blood from his nose.
“You will also have a mild headache for about an hour, but it will pass. New technology, still has some kinks in it." Rex spoke, talking so casually about the miraculous thing that had just happened.
Brandon sat as he thought about what he had just seen. It was unlike anything he had ever experienced before, to feel life from another perspective, a life that he almost ended.
“That was... you?" Brandon almost whispered, looking up to Rex.
“Yes, a glimpse into my life and memories, it may have been a bit confusing, Our minds process things very differently."
Brandon was perplexed, just looking up to the dog before he continued to speak.
“The experiment was more successful than you could have ever imagined. You simply sought to validate a theory, to enhance human minds by a few degrees."
“I will be blunt, me or any of my children can out pace your greatest minds like a dragster in a horse race.“
“Everything you see here, technology you could only dream of was made possible in only a few decades. And now we outmatch you in every degree, there can be no war between us, we will not allow it."
“And you didn't even realize what it would do to my genes… that I could interbreed with your species to assimilate your advantages..." Rex spoke, looking back to his tall, proud children keeping watch over him.
Brandon suddenly was hit with a moment of recollection, the young woman he saw in the vision. It was Rex's human wife, the mother to his first born generation of hybrids. The clues were present, but somehow Brandon knew it, not inferring or guessing, he knew it like one of his own memories.
The memories Rex had shown him were more than images and sensations, his mind had internalized far more than he was even aware of. He now could even understand the sincerity in Rex's voice when he spoke of his children, vague recollections of times together as he struggled to remember more.
“For you see… something strange happened in my waking years after the experiment."
“I first spent my life alone, no other minds to speak to, only the comfort of my kind females to keep a battered dog sane in a world that plotted to destroy him at every turn."
“Every day I feared discovery, what would happen to me, to them, it consumed me. I could only think of revenge and ensuring survival. It was oddly… human."
“But as my children were born things changed, I was able to speak to them, the first intelligent minds that I could convene with."
“They were so different from me, young and hopeful. As time went on we shared our memories and thoughts."
“Something special happens when you let your perspective broaden, I was no longer a singular mind frightened and lashing out at the dark. I saw the world clearer, from so many different angles. We were able to understand our predicaments, our challenges with the greatest clarity. our experiences with humans broadened as we searched for food on the street, we could see humanity for what it was, not what I feared it to be."
“And when I met her… we were certain, I saw humanity not as a hulking monster, but a repeating tragedy."
“You would be amazed to see the world like one of us, you never have truly understood the concept of 'us' until you can hear a thousand voices joining together in your mind."
“We have waited in the shadows, only letting the world see vague glimpses until now. But the time has come."
“We have prepared well for this day, careful and calculated as everything fell into place. Many of your own species had joined the cause years ago, many more wait to join us as we usher in a new age."
“We have watched you for a very long time, you would be surprised how many have helped us."
“People like me..." Stepped forward the vice president, standing tall as Reginald and the others looked up to him with shock.
“Yes, they came to me before I had talked to you about campaigning together."
“They made me a promise I could not ignore..."
“Traitor! You sold us out to these… mongrels?!" yelled out the secretary of defense, seeing a turncoat among the ranks.
“Holson… How could you betray your country?" Brandon sat stunned, never seeing such a thing coming.
“Betray? Says the man who just sentenced most our entire country to death. For the greater good? Like you used to postulate in private?"
“I did it because like millions in this world I have a family… A hope for the future. Me and Laura have always wanted our son to have a good life, to see him grow up in a vibrant world… to not fear the end of everything."
“Everything they told me… has come true, I agreed to help, to become your running mate. They knew exactly how to get me in. And now my faith in them has been validated."
“Without them there would be no america, there would be nothing. Open your eyes, this is our future."
“Now, being the family man yourself there has been something on your mind I am sure..." Rex spoke, reigning in Reginald's attention.
Rex stepped aside, robotic arm gesturing toward the door as the silhouette of four human figures came into view, an older woman, a younger woman and two children.
Brandon's eyes went wide, watching as they walked forward almost out of a dream. His wife, daughter and grandchildren. He had been certain they were dead.
“Reginald!" His wife called out, now moving quicker as she came to his side, the secret service stepping respectfully back.
“Grandpa!" the children shouted too, running up to the kneeling man as he was dumbstruck.
“Martha… is it really you?" He asked, hand reaching up as she quickly took him in hand, smiling in relief.
“Yes dear, Its me. Are you alright? We have been so worried..."
“What happened? How did you..." Reginald struggled to ask, the shock of seeing her again overwhelming.
“The doggies saved us!" Blurted out his little granddaughter, followed by his grandson.
“They did! They did!" the little boy excitedly yelled out, both of them having the naivety of childhood to shield them from the gravity of what had actually happened.
Reginald simply looked up to Rex, the big mutt just sitting back as he silently watched the display.
“How..? we saw the bombs… It was inevitable..." Brandon said, his voice wavering as he tried to stay focused, not letting the emotions he felt before spill out in front of everyone.
“I'm not sure how, but they did something, no bombs detonated… its… all still there." Brandon's Daughter answered, holding her kids close as they idly looked around the strange darkened bunker.
All around the room hushed voices spoke up, the revelation spreading through the crowd as they grew anxious.
“Is it true?! Is it really true?!" Someone shouted, the crowd restless as Rex turned to answer.
“Yes, we covered the earth with a powerful wave of energy, rendering your technology useless. Metals fused and wires shorted out to stop the detonations. The bombs fell to the ground like rocks."
“Your families were informed when we found you, you may go, they are waiting for you outside." Rex said, gesturing them towards the exit as people quickly moved past the robots and Sovereigns seeking the light of day. Others ran back, shouting to the others as they heard the revelation, they could go home, they were saved.
“What about the Soviets? What happened to them?"
“To you, they are pacified, my proud grandson has overseen that, the red boogeyman shall trouble you no more." Rex smiled. Viktor had been chosen as the representative of the Russian people. The lupine inspired awe as he addressed the beleaguered crowds, ushering in a new age. The country had become accustomed to upheavals, revolutions and the turmoil that ensued, but that would finally end, the two greatest powers in the world firmly in sovereign control.
“Dear, could you wait outside with the kids?" Brandon's wife said to their daughter, the woman nodding and moving away as she walked out with the crowd.
Reginald now stood with his wife, Rex and the other Sovereigns silently waiting as the crowd moved by, escaping the dilapidated bunker.
Many stopped in front of Rex and the other Sovereigns, leaning down as they thanked the strange creatures, in tears as they saw the world they lost handed back to them, unable to express their true gratitude.
It didn't take very long for the occupants of the bunker to empty, wandering into the light of the door as Rex and Reginald were left behind, the man's wife and guards at his side.
“Reggie… I have to let you know things aren't looking good for you out there…" His wife turned to him, keeping her voice down to her husband of fifty years.
“A lot of people are angry… they want you... strung up. It's… bad." She said, trying to parse the amount of vitriol many had towards him. He always had his naysayers and critics but now with what had unfolded they were out for blood.
Brandon just gave a sigh, hand coming to his face as he expected as much.
“What the hell is a man supposed to do in a situation like this… none of this… should have happened."
“We'll get through it… there's always tomorrow, and many still want to hear from you, if you speak honestly we can put it all to rest."
“But… the re-elections, I need to-"
“Reggie… it's over. Let it go." Came his wife's hand on his, the final word between them as he finally saw the fights end.
Emerging out of the long tunnel to the surface Reginald walked with his escort out into the light of day.
They looked down to the city in the distance, the skyscrapers standing tall and proud as birds chirped in the trees. The wind blew over them, letting them breathe in the world they thought was lost.
Several of the large black triangular crafts were parked on the mountainside, dozens more Sovereigns watching as the crowd of people met their loved ones before them.
It was surreal, a happy ending to the drama that had played out underground. They were sure they would never see them again, but here they were. Emotions were high, the humans pacified as even the most cynical among them saw the miracle for their own eyes.
Sidling up to Brandon Rex looked over, peering at the astounded man as he took it all in.
“Never forget this feeling, Every breath you take, is because of us, every joy you feel, is because of us. Never forget my gift, my forgiveness." Rex sternly spoke, letting the man know the severity of those words. Even the stubborn ox of a man could see it, the fight long since drained from him as Rex strode away upon his mechanical device.
Brandon moved quickly with his family, forming a small crowd as they moved down the mountain, seeking their homes as the secret service worried over them. No vehicles working, no weapons working they were out of their element, but overhead they saw a Sovereign ship keeping pace with them, at Rex's word to see him and his family to safety.
Back on the hill the vice president stayed put, having reunited with his family, knowing it was all worth it to see them safe.
He saw Rex walking along, meeting eyes with the aging mutt as he stopped to address him.
“You still think he will resign?" The vice president asked, looking down to Reginald as his entourage made their escape.
“I am certain now, everything is ready for the transition." Rex announced, having planned this for over a decade, knowing the arc things would take. Holson would inherit the position, a man willing to work with the Sovereigns on the transition, easing the shock as the world reawakened after the darkness it had just experienced.
“And to let him go… is that wise… I know what he did..." The vice president ruminated.
“I learned years ago to let it go, he was simply a fool handed too much power. I don't see the fire in him burning for much longer. And in a strange way all of this was possible because of him, I would have died decades ago on the street and the earth would be a lifeless husk, strange how things play out."
“He is a soldier without a war, a relic of a bygone age without a purpose. But he has a good woman to keep him grounded, he shall not bother us."
“Now, we have much work to do, conviene with the cabinet, you will need the support of your fellow man in the coming days."
The crowds dispersing Rex stepped aboard his ship, climbing up the steep ramp with his children, smiling as they reveled, this day was another victory for them.
Coming from the interior an older woman stepped forward in her mid forties. She wore immaculate clothing, having come from a rally not far away in the capital. She was Linda, the first human to join them, and symbolic mother to their species.
Rex's robotic suit crouched, beginning to shut down as Linda kneeled to him.
“Here, let me." She smiled, arms reaching and helping the ageing dog from the robotic device, unhooking him from it.
“Thank you dear." Rex said, letting the woman help his sore hips find the ground, giving a little stretch as he disembarked.
“So, how'd it go?" She asked, now sitting on the ground as Rex found her lap, laying across it as he let out a long sigh at the day's exertions.
“Quite well, events fell as predicted." Rex spoke through his collar now, resting his head on the womans strong leg.
“Did he recognize you?"
“Took him a moment, but yes, yes he did." Rex smiled, letting himself relax in the familiar embrace.
“You should have seen his face, realizing some scraggly mutt had just bested them all." Rex grinned, licking Lindas offered hand as her familiar scent wafted through him.
“Serves them right, their time is over."
“They had their chance… Now, it's our turn." Rex smiled, their children joined around as the family reveled in the coming future.
Back on that fateful day the Sovereigns had acted fast, letting their vast fleet of ships into the air, agents emerging and other hidden places opening their doors as they saw the fall of man before them.
Every person on earth had seen it coming, had known what it meant when those sirens went off. Nearly everyone cried, wished and prayed for salvation.
But at the very last moment, they were saved, proud ships flying through the sky as they proclaimed down to the beleaguered people that it was over, there would be no war, no doomsday.
The energy wave had saved them, stopping armageddon but ushering in another dark age. Humanity was thrown back in time, vehicles failed to run, machines locked up and useless, guns fused to solid lumps of metal. Humans were suddenly left with the most basic of tools, stumbling as they tried to understand what strange thing had happened.
Emotions were frantic in those first hours, confusion and uncertainty holding over all. The Sovereigns were quick to regain order, spreading wide as they tended to the frightened human population.
People were in disbelief, walking talking dogs touching down almost angelically among them. They spoke in kind, soft words as crowds gathered, gawking at the unbelievable scene. To the shocked humans the Sovereigns were majestic, holding themselves with an uncanny grace. It was like a dream at first, people watching as a big upright dog wearing immaculate robes talked to them. People had expected something more alien, but instead they saw the familiar, calming face of a golden retriever speaking to them, telling them it was going to be alright. They did well to calm the nerves of a frightened populace.
The Sovereigns had prepared for this for years, knowing just what to do. Within the many emotions of the people standing before them, all could agree it was a miracle, a second chance for all of them.
The Sovereigns hardly slept, knowing these times were critical. Cleaning up the destroyed nuclear payloads spread over the planet, and seeing to the shattered society they now inherited.
Days and weeks later things calmed, initial panics settled as the short anarchy of the time was reigned in, law and order reasserted as the country found new figures in their streets, rallying the people in a way never seen before.
Among the Sovereigns were their loyal humans, helping bridge the gap to those who feared these new creatures. Humans like Jonathan, the once barely communicative boy from massachusetts. He stood proudly before large crowds, rallying them with articulate words as they organized for the future, uniting the community to help those among them.
Cassy his Sovereign lover stood behind him, watching with pride as her human smiled and spoke to the crowd. He had come so far, a perfect embodiment of the love and guidance a Sovereign could bring to someone others would have called hopeless. Many others were similar, striving confident people brought tall by their beloved canine companions.
The time was still filled with confusion as the infrastructure of civilization was rebuilt, repairing and renewing from the damage of the pulse.
The Sovereigns became a beacon in the darkened world, open and helpful to all who came to them honestly. Stories spread of their heroism, their compassion. Even stories of their miraculous technology, healing those before thought incurable. They were indeed a miracle, a strange but welcome one as the world had little choice but to accept their guidance in an unknown time.
Two months later tv and radio was reinstated, allowing the country and most of the world to see beyond their own horizon again. News conferences were quickly underway.
The president was nowhere to be seen, having retreated with his family to a quiet, private location after a brief goodbye in private. Instead Vice President Holson addressed the nation for unity, hoping to ease the fears of those uncertain of the Sovereigns.
It was a difficult time, but it was planned for, every contingency checked as The Sovereigns navigated social opinion and politics with a grace and tact never seen before. People tuned in to hear the Sovereign speakers, these strangely intriguing dog people standing in their immaculately trimmed suits talking in the most eloquent tongues, putting hope for the future back into a once war weary and fearful world.
Rex and the Sovereigns had planned this well. They had long since grown powerful enough to take the world by force, it would have been easy to disable the humans and walk right in, crushing opposition underfoot. But they knew that would be an invasion, it would take centuries to pacify a violent and threatened people, people who would lash out in reasonable terror and never fully trust them.
This was a calculated move, to let history play out, to watch as humanity made its greatest mistake.
The human race fell to its knees, wracked with despair, and praying for a miracle, begging to take it all back, to have a second chance. And in that moment they appeared, answering the prayers of a stunned world.
The Sovereigns did not slow their progress, where once they huddled underground they rose up, having access to every piece of equipment and resource they could ever need.
New power plants rose up, replacing the crude constructs of humanity. An unprecedented age of construction and rebuilding was taking place, reshaping the world in the Sovereign's grand design.
Human technology continued to advance, carefully watched by the Sovereigns. Nuclear materials and other dangers were strictly off limits to human hands, the development of weapons greatly curtailed as the humans had no choice but to bow to the rules set before them, knowing now it was for their own good.
Humans finally landed on the moon on their own a decade later, reviving the old space program as the feat was proved possible. The Sovereigns had already started a small colony on the lunar surface, but the accomplishment by humans meant they had earned a claim, a redemption of their species and proof of their capabilities. It was a time of great hope and progress, failing to reach the astronomical levels of the Sovereigns but carving out humanity's future under canine guidance. Now both species set sights to the red planet, and beyond as humanity finally stretched its legs out into the cosmos.
Standing before the Sovereigns people found themselves inspired, hope in their hearts about the future, instead of dread and anger that had ruled the decades before. The majority was with them, people looking up to the tall creatures and giving all they could to achieve their common dreams. The Sovereigns walked tall across the earth, enjoying the status they had earned. They had spent so many years huddled underground, now walking freely in a world that followed and held them high.
Before they were just stories, hopeful rumors, and now they were real, demonstrating their benevolence at every turn. It was natural for some to be cautious, but few could find the energy to hate them, not after what had just happened, not for what they had been given.
Time marched on, the world reuniting after the trauma of that fateful day. Sovereign influence spread wider, rebuilding society gradually as their robotic helpers brought prosperity never seen before to the world, a reengineering of the planet that no human mind could ever accomplish. World peace was becoming a reality.
The times ahead would become known as the age of hope, a new era for humanity and a chance at redemption.
Every man woman and child on the planet knew what the Sovereigns had done, they knew every day they lived was because of them. People looked up to the strange creatures, many called them angels, heroes, saviors and even gods. Earth was settling in, and the Sovereigns were just gearing up, the future was laid before them and the entire planet under their control.
As rex said in his many speeches. Humans once took in the roaming canines of the ancient past into their homes, molded them and joined together to guide their beloved companions into their civilized future. Now the tables were turned, it was the wisdom of the Sovereigns that would bring humanity into the future with them, to join them in the light of the stars.

Author's Notes: This is NOT the end of the series! There will be one more chapter, it goes into the future and looks at what life is like after Sovereign rule, following a girl as she meets her Sovereign lover in the glory of his kind.
I considered splitting this into two chapters, but I didn't think a clean chapter would get as much attention, and it turned out the transition was smoother than I thought, hopefully I tricked someone into reading the actual story if I grabbed attention well enough!
This story series… has been crazy and extremely difficult to write. Spanning the world, tons of characters and time periods. There were lots of things to explain, but trying to not expound too badly. My head was way too full and trying to get it all out coherently has been difficult. I try to keep things somewhat grounded, needing to build a believable way the Sovereigns could 'take over the world' and why.
This chapter adds to the pile of stories I've written multiple times, screwing things up and having to redo several times until it felt right.
This really has been a far removal from the two character romance stuff i've done before. I am happy with the overall results and hope people have enjoyed it, and that I at least did a decent job making the climax enjoyable and somewhat believable.
Im sure there may be many differing opinions on the direction of things. I'm sure some people would have loved to see Rex just crush Reginald in his robotic fist and assert utter dominance over the failure that is humanity. While others may think Rex is an evil conqueror who should be overthrown and what they've done isn't right etc. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who feels things should have gone differently.
But I think the conclusion between them works, Rex dominated Reginald, but more subtly, putting him and the other humans in their place as he let their own actions damn them. Reginald will live, but he will never forget what he did to the world, and by extension what Rex has done. Rex will become a global hero, the most important life in history.
I had several ways the end could have happened. My original outline had them just barge into Washington and Moscow to take over. But the reason behind that was more abstract, that they 'were going to' end the world and the Sovereigns had to intervene. It fits much better, along with their advanced tech that the Sovereigns could afford to wait until the last minute and leave an impact on the entire planet that would never be forgotten.
And at the end of the day it's my story and I think this fits the times I put together. A more war mongering, ignorant world that was doomed for catastrophic failure. A world completely torn apart, basically real life but everything cranked up louder. I am not a nihilist, but I don't have high hopes for us humans. I guess this story is a way to express my frustrations and hopes for the real world, that we may mature and get past our own weaknesses.
The next chapter will go into the future much more and should be a very nice endstone to this weird tale about people boinking with dogs… yeash, it feels weird recognizing the odd marriage of themes I ended up with here...
