The next chapter for Journeymanic in this long running series. There's not much in the way of sexy fun times in this chapter, However we are moving towards the climax of this long running story. As Silver Mountain Creek University and the surrounding town are being kept under a quarantine by the CDC, Kattie reaches a break through with the ancient stone disk that started all of the strange transformations. This has, however let to a rather unsettling discovery. Meanwhile someone new has shown up to assist the CDC researches.

Chapter 13

Like the rest of the students at Silver Mountain Creek University, Kattie was under quarantine and was spending most of her time in her dorm room. Being a dedicated computer user, it didn't affect her daily life all that much. Kattie was still at her computer for hours on end, she had just done away with wearing anything below her waist. Her top was covered with what used to be an oversized anime t-shirt, though these days it fits pretty much perfectly over her now much expanded chest. Kattie had replaced the standard issue desk her room came with with a standable desk when she had started school at the beginning of the semester. She found it was better for her when not just relaxing to play a game, and that was before she had an extra-large package between her legs.

Kattie was hard at work trying to reverse engineer the 'code' of the disk that had caused the transformation of the women on campus. As serious as the situation was and even with her own personal stake in matters, Kattie found it kind of fun. At the very least she was documenting everything. Kattie figured if she pursued a master's degree in the future it would make for a great thesis, and that was only confirmed by Dr Schmidt.

She reached for a can of energy drink sitting on a coaster on her desk. The rest of the four-pack she had bought were sitting empty on her desk. As Kattie sipped her eyes glanced over a bit of 'code' she had been working on. Then it hit her what she needed to do. Putting down the can, Kattie's hands started to fly over the keyboard. Her roommate said she looked like a hacker from a movie when she really got going, and the clicks of her mechanical keyboard only made it more of a show.

“Oh my god…" she whispered softly to herself as she took in her findings.

She ran a simulation twice, both times confirming what she had just found out. The entire time they had been examining the Disk and studying its makeup and inscriptions they had all assumed it was off. But now Kattie realized the truth.

This thing isn't off or even in some kind of sleep mode. It's been charging for another pulse, and a hell of a big one too. Forget the campus, this thing would hit other countries if it goes off! Kattie quickly backed up all her findings and then rushed to get dressed. Forget trying to reverse anything, we need to put a stop to it!

After belting a skirt around her waist that used to be a fleece blanket Kattie picked up her phone and made a call.

“Summer? It's Kattie. We need to talk."

Audrey had thought she was beyond being surprised by her transformation. But the universe decided to keep her guessing. What had started as a pair of bumps just below Audrey's navel had continued to grow and take shape. After several hours she came to the realization there were actually bones forming inside of them. Audrey was so distracted by the growths she hadn't even realized the rest of her chest was now completely coated in soft gray fur. Only her hands and head were still showing skin at this point.

It was when the growths began to twitch and flex Audrey realized they had to be limbs of some-sort. She had a little control over them, but far less than her tail. It apparently takes time for new appendages to fully map to her brain and then learn the muscle memory, just like a baby learning to use their arms and legs to do what they want. Chelsea was doing her best to distract Audrey from the new limbs. She appreciated the effort, but there was no way she could ignore what was happening to her.

Audrey had dozed off on the couch after not sleeping well the previous night. Chelsea was nearby in the kitchen, trying not to make too much noise as she cleaned up the dishes. As for her, the changes had seemed to stop. Apart from her ears and mane, the rest of Chelsea's upper body appeared human, if with an overly large pair of breasts. Once things reached her navel, however, all of that went away. Chelsea stood upright on a set of powerful equine legs ending in solid thick hooves covered entirely in chestnut fur. She looked much like how a satyr would be depicted, except for the animal portion was from a horse instead of a goat.

Chelsea had gained a significant bit of height with the change, standing at least a foot taller than she had before all this began. She had no doubt she could run faster and pull a heavier load with her new legs, but hadn't had the opportunity to see for sure because of the quarantine. Chelsea was just finishing up with washing the dishes when she heard a loud snore followed by a gasp from the living room.

“Audrey?" she called out as she dried her hands on a dishtowel, “Are you ok?"

“Not, really, no." The soft reply came.

Chelsea hurried to the couch and could see her partner staring down at the growing limbs. She looked for herself and let out a small gasp of her own. They had doubled in size since Audrey had laid down for a nap, but that wasn't what had her attention. Each of the limbs was now tipped with a miniature dark colored hoof. There was no question now that Audrey was growing a second pair of legs.

Oh my god!" Chelsea squeaked out. “Are they…do they hurt?"

“No, they don't hurt, but they are making things pretty damn uncomfortable." Audrey sighed before trying to sit up.

She ended up needing Chelsea's help as the small legs kept getting in her way.

“What do you think this means?" Chelsea asked as she sat down next to her.

“Considering you are some kind of equine satyr, I can only assume I'm on my way to becoming some kind of centaur."

“But that's…"

“Impossible? All of this should be impossible." Audrey looked down and focused on moving the small legs; it was getting easier to move them now.

Chelsea put her arm around her partner and held her tightly. Audrey leaned into the hug, needing the support like she never had before. She didn't know whether to cry or not, afterall, this was all her fault. If only she hadn't tried to read the Latin on the Disk. Then it would just be finals and winter break for everyone right now. And the worst part was Dr Vasseur, Laura, had taken on the blame. It wasn't right, no matter what her mentor had said. She closed her eyes and held tightly onto Chelsea. Then her phone began to ring.

“Just let it go to voicemail," Chelsea whispered, “it can wait."

“But that ringtone, it's Summer calling." Audrey said, looking over at her phone on the coffee table.

“She can still wait." Chelsea held on even tighter.

When the cafeteria opened for dinner, a group of women left their dorms, but slipped into the nearly abandoned Kline Hall instead of getting in line. Out of habit they went to the room H.O.O.V.E.S. used before they came out to the world. They pulled together chairs into a small circle.

Summer was there, of course, as their leader. She now resembled an anthropomorphic horse, fully covered in a coat of dun yellow hair, but they all still recognized her. Mack, Dannie, and Kaylee weren't far behind Summer, though their muzzles seemed to still be growing in. Kattie seemed to have not gone much further than the ears and tail, along with the more obvious changes to her chest and groin. Tara looked around and had a pretty good idea that she would start to sprout a muzzle any day now. She was hopeful that Ryan would still be ok with that. Audrey was the last one to enter the room. She was having some difficulty moving around. Her hips and legs were starting to shift to accommodate the new pair of legs, even if they were still far too small to touch the ground.

“Alright, I think that's everyone I was asked to invite to this meeting." Summer said with a nod, “I'll leave the rest to you, Kattie."

“Thanks, Summer." Kattie then took a deep breath before starting. “I've been cooped up in my dorm room working on the code for the Disk, and I've found out a few things about it. And I'm going to be honest with you all, it's not good news."

“Of course not." Audrey sighed as she tried to get comfortable on the chair but eventually gave up and just sat on the floor so she could stretch out her new legs.

“I wanted to see if there was any way to stop the transformations from continuing and there is, but…"

“But what? Mack asked, leaning forward slightly."

“We can stop things from proceeding any further, but we won't be able to reverse anything. I'm afraid we'll all be stuck like this, or maybe a little further to completion, like Summer."

“I wouldn't want to go back anyway." Tara said softly, “but I know my situation is different."

“None of us would blame you for that." Dannie spoke up, “the fact is I find myself kind of liking the new me. And I certainly don't want to lose any of the additions down below."

“I think we're all attached to what's attached at this point." Kaylee shook her head but still smiled."

“I'll be honest, I know the people here are pretty much ok with their new forms, so I wanted to run things by you guys first before I got into the real issue."

“What do you mean real issue?" Audrey asked, suddenly growing very concerned.

Kattie let out a long sigh. “We just assumed the Disk was inactive, or maybe in some kind of dormant sleep mode, but I've figured out it isn't. The damn thing has been charging up since October."

“Charging up to do what?" Tara asked concern showing on her face.

“Another pulse, like what hit the school back in October. However if the simulations are correct it will be much, much bigger, affecting a lot more than just our local area.

Audrey's face was pale and her mouth went dry. She had trouble even getting the next few words out. “H-how big are we talking about? The county? The state?"

“No," Kattie slowly shook her head, “if I'm right it would extend up into a good chunk of Canada, South and Central America. Maybe even further depending how much of a charge builds before it releases."

“Oh my god…" Audrey whimpered before covering her face with her hands and starting to sob.

“Audrey…" Summer quickly moved to her side, and placed her hands on her shoulders.

“You don't understand, none of you do!" The tears were streaming down her face. “This , this, everything! It's not Dr Vasseur's fault! She lied to protect me! I'm the one who read the incantation, she wasn't even in the room when it happened! I'm the reason this happened to all of you, all the women on campus and beyond!"

Audrey couldn't take the lie anymore, she wouldn't let her mentor take the fall, the world needed to know the truth. The other six women stared at her as she sobbed. Audrey looked down at the floor, unable to meet their gazes.

“Why didn't you say something earlier," Kattie started in on her, “like when we first came together to talk about it. You hid it and then let Dr Vasseur take the blame for everyone's anger."

“I didn't want her to do it, she just did it without talking to me about it."

“You could have spoken up in the meeting." Mack glared at her, “instead you just rolled over and let her step into the firing line."

“I know, alright! I know I'm a shit person for everything!" Audrey cried out, her voice full of anguish.

“Everyone stop it!" Summer shouted, “That's enough! You all know damn well nobody had any idea that reading that stupid bit of Latin would cause any of this. No wonder Dr Vasseur tried to protect Audrey if you're going to act like this."

The room grew quiet after that, other than sniffles from Audrey. Tara got up from her chair and got on her knees next to Audrey and hugged her tightly.

“I know it was an accident, but you can't understand what this has meant to me. Even if I'm going to end up a horse-person, I will still be better off for it." She whispered softly.

Audrey couldn't say anything, but squeezed Tara back. Summer gave everyone a few more moments to calm down before she continued with the meeting.

“It doesn't matter who started things, what matters is stopping them at this point." Summer said in what she hoped was a confident voice.

“R-right." Kattie shook it off and continued with her report. “I've been working on a way to turn it off via a ritual. This would then stop the second pulse from going out as well as stopping any further transformations. I'm also fairly confident we won't be contagious anymore with the Disk fully powered down.

“So," Dannie asked to be sure, “we could be around other people and not pass it on?"

Kattie nodded. “That's what we think will happen, although…"

“What?" Kaylee was wondering what the hidden catch was.

Kattie's ears folded back slightly. “Biology isn't my strong suit," she turned towards Summer, “but I've read about our condition from your doctor and what he's said about it."

“You mean Dr Clemens? What about his report?" Summer was curious where she was going with this.

“Once the ritual is complete and our bodies calm down, I wouldn't be surprised if the 'free birth control' we've been experiencing stops."

“Oh, oh yeah, that would be a concern." Mack flushed a bit as she looked between her two partners.

“Yeah, but also remember Dr. Clemens said that we have been altered on a genetic level. That means we'll probably pass down our tails if and when any of us have kids."

“Can I actually have kids? I mean, do I have what I need internally now? I wasn't even thinking about that." Tara's eyes were wide as she placed her hands over her abdomen.

“Dr Clemens is still here in town under the lockdown. I'm sure he can find a way to verify that for you." Summer said with a soft smile.

“Thank you, I appreciate it." Tara smiled softly.

Having regained her composure, Audrey spoke up. “Do you have an idea on how to perform the ritual?"

Kattie nodded. “I think so. We just need the right kind of location to perform the ritual."

“What, like a temple to Epona?" Kaylee asked, and she didn't seem to be joking.

Kattie shrugged. “Pretty much. Now we don't need to go out and build a giant temple out on the quad or anything, but the room does need to be properly set up to allow us to reprogram the Disk.

“So, more like a chapel then?" Tara offered.

“Yes, but I'm afraid the old one on campus isn't quite set up for what we need."

Dannie shook her head. “I didn't even know there was a chapel on campus…"

“So instead, we will be making use of an empty basement room in the Calumet Building. We can set it up how we need and not worry about destroying any historical architecture. Also we should have easy access with Dr. Vasseur and her friends working out of the building."

Summer nodded her head. “Alright, so we don't have a lot of time to prepare everyone for what is happening." She looked at her watch. “Or much time left before they close the cafeteria for the night. Kattie, you recruit anyone you need to help set up for the ritual. Everyone else, we need to be ready to support those who were looking forward to changing back to their old bodies and help them accept it. I will also talk to my Uncle Joe about what's going on.

“And what about the CDC?" Audrey asked.

“They don't even realize what is going on has little if anything to do with science, they would call us all crazy even if you went up to them and confessed. Ultimately, if we solve this situation for them, they can't be too upset."

“I sure hope so." Audrey sighed before starting to get up off the floor.

Dr Will Graham was annoyed to be interrupted by his phone continuing to go off. Swearing softly to himself, he stepped away from the microscope he was using. Will's phone was ringing for the third time by the time he reached it.

“Graham here, what is it?" His annoyance was obvious in his tone.

“Dr. Graham, this is Corporal Jennings at checkpoint Abel. We've got a vehicle here wanting access to the base."

“Do they have the right clearance and papers? Why are you even calling me?"

“Sir, he has orders to be here, but he is refusing to show any ID. He says I'm not high enough clearance to see his credentials."

Will raised his eyebrow, that was a new one. He had a feeling this wasn't an agent from one of the normal alphabet soup agencies. He had, however, heard stories of this sort of thing from his old mentor when he first joined up with the CDC.

“Do his orders check out?"

“Williams confirmed it, the orders are even signed by the President!"

“Did he give you a name?"

“Just Mr Smith."

Will sighed, “Let Mr Smith on through. I'll close up what I'm doing and get ready to meet with our mystery agent."

“Yes sir."

Will let out another deep sigh before sending a text to Dr Madsen asking for her to join him in his office.

***

The visitor was shown into the dry cleaners turned command center. He was dressed in a black suit and tie and was carrying a heavy metal case with him. Instead of the dark sunglasses Will expected, he was instead wearing round wire-framed glasses. The man was about average height and weight, but he carried himself well

“Doctors William Graham and Helen Madsen, I presume," he said, offering his free hand.

Will shook hands with the man. “That's us, and you are?"

“Mr. Smith."

“Oh? You're not an agent? And what about your first name?" Helen smirked a little

“Just Mr. Smith will do." He didn't seem phased or even annoyed by her questions.

“And what brings you here, Mr. Smith. Obviously you don't work for the CDC."

“I have been brought in as an expert to assist in the situation going on here. I've already read your brief on my way to Silver Mountain Creek, But first I would like to go over all the gathered information you already have to make an assessment.

“An expert in what exactly?" Helen asked, narrowing her eyes slightly.

Honestly, Will was wondering the same thing, but he needed to be the diplomatic one.

“Please, Mr. Smith, sit down and make yourself comfortable, we are going to be here for a while.

Mr. Smith placed his case on the table as gently as he could. “In that case, I would like to get a drink first, do you happen to have any tea? I'm not a fan of coffee."

“Yes, but nothing fancy." Helen motioned to the coffee station in the corner.

Mr. Smith smiled slightly. “I wasn't expecting loose tea and a proper infuser, generic bagged tea is fine."

At least his expectations seem reasonable so far. Will thought. “Let's all get something to drink first."

***

Will was impressed by just how well Mr. Smith was at just sitting in his chair and paying attention. He only spoke up three of four times for clarification as he scribbled down notes. Will got the feeling that as strange as what was happening at Silver Mountain Creek University and Town, this wasn't Mr. Smith's first rodeo.

“And that is where we currently stand as of this morning." Will finished.

“Thank you, that was quite through, more so than I was expecting given the situation."

“I almost feel insulted by that statement." Helen said, crossing her arms.

“Please don't be. Lesser scientists would have already gone crazy from the impossibility of the situation. Instead you have continued to research the outbreak to the best of your abilities."

“You sound like you've run into a situation along these kinds of lines before."

“I can't really speak on the other communicable arcane transformative outbreaks, but this is by far the largest and certainly the most public one on record, at least as far as my clearance is concerned."

“What did you call this? Arcane transformative outbreak? Are you calling this situation magical?" Helen stared at him, unbelieving.

“Exactly, yes. There is little doubt of that. And that is why I am here to assist in matters."

Will narrowed his eyes. “Is this some kind of sick joke?"

“My orders were signed personally by the President, does that sound like a joke to you? As I already said, what is happening here is clearly impossible as far as science is concerned, yet it is still happening. Make no mistake, what has happened here is an outbreak and what you have done so far have not been missteps. However, it is time to take a new approach to the situation."

With that, Mr. Smith unlocked his case and removed several items from within. He first unfolded a cloth mat on the table, embroidered with sigils and symbols that looked like something out of a role playing game. Then he set up a series of instruments. They appeared to be made of polished stainless steel, but what their purpose was Will and Helen had no idea.

Helen shook her head “It looks like he's setting up a game of Mouse Trap."

“I wish there was simply an app for my phone that could detect magical currents and analyze what happened to this town and campus. It would mean a lot less for me to lug around on missions." They could see the slight smile on Mr Smith's lips as he set up his equipment.

Helen shook her head and turned to her colleague. “Will, are you really going to allow this?"

“We don't really have a choice, this is above the heads of even the Directors at this point. Besides, I'm curious to see what this little magic show will be."

Mr Smith shook his head. “It's all jokes and mocking when I first show up. By the time I leave, things are quite different."

With the apparatus assembled it started to move, seemingly under its own power. Mr. Smith watched intently as the indicators pointed to the various markings on the cloth. He frowned and started to jot down more into his notes.

“It looks like what we are dealing with is a botched ritual. And it wasn't something simple. No wonder such a large area was affected. Somebody tapped into forces they had no chance of controlling. There's still a lot of residual energy bouncing around out there. This is not good news."

Will sighed. “We already knew things were not good."

“No, you knew things were weird. This confirms just how serious the situation really is.

“And how serious is the situation, magic man?" Helen crossed her arms, still not believing any of the mumbo-jumbo.

Mr. Smith let out a long sigh. “Serious enough for me to ask if your wills are up to date."

“What?" Will stared hard at the man in the black suit.

“This outbreak can not be allowed to spread any further. More than just our country is at risk. Full sterilization is now on the table if we can not find a solution in a reasonable time frame."

Helen stood up and leaned over the table towards the strange visitor. “What do you mean by full sterilization?"

Will placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed it tightly. “He means they firebomb the entire area and burn everything and everyone to ash."

“That's insane!" She shouted.

“It's not a decision that is made lightly, Dr Madsen. And doubly so with this situation already broadcast to the world. We've never had a breach of this magnitude in the history of our nation." Mr. Smith shook his head. “I don't know how these young women managed to stay off our radar for so long. Someone is going to be in it deep over this, but at least that's not my problem." Mr. Smith started to pack up his equipment back into the case. “I'm going to need access to one of your hazmat suits, as I will have to take several more readings inside the quarantine zone. I need a point of origin, among other things."

“And what are we supposed to do while you're out there playing wizard?"

“Keep doing your research, the more we know the better chance we have of stopping it. Also, you might want to have your IT people go through any electronic communications the women on campus have had with each other. There may be a few more clues about the true cause of this buried there."

Tara was sitting at her desk. She had already finished the term paper she was working on over an hour ago. Now she was just listening to music while thinking about the news she had received from Dr Clemens. Tara was pulled out of her own thoughts by a soft knock on her door.

“Hey, Tara, it's me." Ryan called out from the other side of the door.

Since it was her boyfriend and not her brother, she didn't bother reaching for her robe. “Come in."

Ryan let himself in and quickly closed the door. “Hey, are you ok?"

“Who, me?" Tara asked, standing up and stretching out her mostly furry body.

“You look like you've got something on your mind."

“Yeah, I guess I do." She saved her work and closed her laptop. “Actually, there's a few things I wanted to talk to you about."

“Is one of them about your body?"

“Both are, actually."

“I kind of guessed you're going to end up full horse-person like Summer at this point."

Tara sighed. “Good guess. I'm pretty sure that a muzzle is going to pop out of my face any moment."

“And I don't care about that, I already love all the other equine parts of your body." Ryan walked over and wrapped his arms around her body tightly. “It doesn't matter to me."

“I don't know what's harder to believe, what's happened to me, or finding you." She rested her head on his shoulder.

“For what it's worth, if none of this had happened, I'd still be your boyfriend."

“Yep, definitely finding you." Tara chuckled softly, even as tears formed in the corners of her eyes.

They held each other tightly for several more moments before Ryan spoke up.

“What was the other thing you wanted to speak to me about?"

“You remember that little emergency meeting I went to the other day?"

“Yeah?"

“Well, Kattie had said something about our bodies settling down and having to worry about birth control. The thing is, it was never something on my radar, even after I grew a, you know."

“I, ah, yeah...I hadn't given it much thought either." He blushed a little.

“So, that made me wonder if my body grew everything else I would need as a female. Summer arranged for her family physician to take a look at me and after an ultrasound, he confirmed it. I have it all, and as far as anyone can tell, it works just as well as my boy bits do." She smiled widely.

'So, you could…"

“Once our bodies calm down after the ritual, yeah. So," she pressed an index finger into his chest, “you are going to need some condoms, mister."

Ryan blinked but then smiled. “I better go stock up on the big sized ones then, the old ones I had won't fit me anymore."

“Hmmm, no they won't." Tara leaned down and kissed her boyfriend softly. “ I would love to be a mother in the future, but I want to graduate and get a job first."

“I wonder if they will have to make super large ones for you and the other girls."

"You'd be surprised what already exists, and what some of the girls have already found."

Ryan laughed.

“But at least I don't have to worry about knocking my boyfriend up anytime soon."

Dr Laura Vasseur didn't bother putting in a formal request for the use of room B-4 in the basement of the Calumet Building. No one was using it and it just so happened that Dr Armatage already had the key to the room. Apparently the previous facility manager hadn't requested it back before his retirement, and the current one had no idea the key was out there in the wild. After performing a deep cleaning of the room to rid it from years of dust and dead bugs by several volunteers, the real work began.

After running her own work past Dr Schmidt and Dr Vasseur, Kattie carefully laid out complex lines on the floor of the room. Drawing upon sacred geometry and the information she had decoded a complex pattern was painted onto the old concrete floor. Dr Armatage and Dr Anderson helped by recreating various statues, lamps, and other odds and ends. They were now working to place the objects in very specific locations in the room turned temple.

“You know Clive, you could have had a career as an antiquities forger." Dr Anderson said as they lifted a statue representing Epona into position on a raised platform.

“Heh, well, at least it proves to my dead father that the art classes I took were not a waste of time and money." He turned to Kattie, “How is that?"

“Pretty close, but if you could shift it one degree counterclockwise..." She said with a smile. She watched as the two older men carefully nudged the statue into position. “Perfect!"

“And people say programming isn't physically demanding." Dr Schmidt chuckled from his workstation.

“I still can't get over how this is closer to programming a computer than praying to a goddess." Dr Vasseur shook her head.

“It is fascinating, programming and controlling a device with the environment as an interface. If this cult had been more mainstream, I wonder how advanced computers would be today?" Dr Schmidt wondered.

“That's assuming the church didn't burn all of it to the ground." Kattie said as she tapped on her tablet. “Then again given what's happened to us, I couldn't blame them for calling it witchcraft. Dr. Vasseur, did you read through that email I sent you?"

“Yes, though I think I want to go over it with you, I am fairly certain there's a few errors in your Latin."

Kattie shrugged. “That's what I get for relying on the web to translate for me."

“What's this about?" Dr Armatage looked a little confused.

“It's some lines I am supposed to say during the ritual." Dr. Vasseur sighed, “Priestess was not something I ever thought would end up on my CV."

“You know, if you registered as a minister online you could perform weddings for some extra cash on the side." Dr Anderson laughed.

“I suppose I'll turn to you and Clive then to build a chapel for me." She smirked back. “Kattie, what else do we need to do to get the room ready for the ritual?"

“Let's see, you will need to select seven of us to be in attendance, and of course we will need the Disk set up on that dais in the center of the room. Otherwise I think everything else is set at this point.

“Good, I want to get this taken care of before anything else goes wrong."

It was as if the universe was waiting for Laura to say those exact words. The door to the room was suddenly thrown open. Men in hazmat suits rushed in with weapons at the ready.

“Freeze!"

“Get down!"

“Down on the ground! All of you!"

The men shouted. Kattie dropped to the floor, shaking with fear.

“What the hell is going on!" Dr Vasseur shouted, taking a step towards the armed men.

“I said get down!" a shotgun was pointed at her chest and Laura felt the cold bite of fear. She lowered herself slowly to the ground. Kattie and the professors were all quickly restrained and searched. Once the room was secure an unarmed man in a hazmat suit walked into the room, he swept the room with a studied gaze before walking over to where Dr Vasseur was laying on the ground. He crouched down and stared at the professor through the face shield of his suit.

“Just what in the hell do you think you are doing?" He asked in a cool, measured voice.

“I should be the one asking you that!" Laura snapped back. “You have no right to do any of this!"

“I have every right to put a stop to the unsanctioned practice of true magic."

Laura narrowed her eyes as she stared at the man in the hazmat suit. “Who are you?"

“Mr. Smith, and that's all you need to know."
