#3 of Midnight

A female teen with only a few months left of high school falls into an intimate relationship with an umbreon on the school's grounds. She has to juggle this and high school itself, all while finding herself as a person. Playing it safe is key.

This story was the first I've ever written. I've edited it a lot since the initial release but kept its original structure.

Chapter 19

"Do you know what the answer to number three is?" Alyssa looked at Julie with attentive green eyes. She was sitting at the bottom of her bed.

"Did you even try looking yourself? You asked me the same thing for one and two." Julie stared at her work and didn't bother looking at Alyssa as she spoke.

"I would... If I liked Science, now, do you have it?" Alyssa asked this almost icily but held herself back for the most part.

"Hold on..." Julie pulled up her blue pajama pants while reading more text from her book.

"Julie... you okay?" Alyssa noticed how silent she'd been. She knew Julie well as they'd been friends since 10th grade.

"I wish I knew." Julie looked away.

"What is it?" Alyssa dropped her pen.

"Don't want to talk about it right now." A brief expression of sadness washed over Julie's face, but she hastily fixed it before facing Alyssa.

"Well, want me to go? You said your mother would be here at six, and it's five."

"Let me give you the answers first." Julie didn't want to push her closest friend away. She allowed Alyssa to copy her answers and let her leave afterward.

Julie stood at the top of the stairs and watched Alyssa slip into her black shoes. She usually wore all black. After she was gone, Julie went back into her room. She had to go to bed. Maybe her mind would clear itself overnight.

--

Her eyes shot open to sunlight hitting her face, nearly blinding her. She shielded her eyes with her arm and turned to face the wall. Julie didn't feel much better than she did last night, which meant today would be a chore to get through.

She begrudgingly got up and went about her usual routine, putting on a red plaid skirt, black leggings, and a long-sleeved white shirt. When she got downstairs with her backpack over her shoulder, Julie saw her mother in the kitchen with Lilly sitting beside her. She and her mother looked alike, hair color and all. Julie hadn't taken anything from her father. He wasn't around anymore. He and her mother had separated while Julie was young.

"Morning, Jule, made you something light before I go. How was school yesterday?"

"Thank you, and it went well," Julie said while giving a slight grin to her mom, hoping she wouldn't see any apparent sorrow on her face.

"Hope today will be even better, sweetie. Love you." With that and a tight hug, her mother shortly left for work.

Julie had to go as well. She ate what her mother made for her, told Lilly to stay inside today, and headed out the door. This time, Julie left a bit earlier than usual and had approximately forty-five minutes before her first class started. The walk to her high school subtracted twenty-five.

She walked through the busy morning halls, dropping her backpack by her locker and unlocking it accordingly. She looked around for Midnight momentarily, but he was nowhere to be found. That wasn't uncommon. Julie had no clue when the faculty let him roam the school, but she usually saw him after her first class. Seeing him would have brightened her morning, so hopefully, she was right.

Julie had a hard time paying attention in class. She daydreamed often and didn't take many notes. Maybe the fact that she had no one in life besides Alyssa and her mother was beginning to hit her. It was partially her fault, however. Julie never made a real effort to ask anyone out during all of the years she'd spent here, but she didn't find appeal in doing so at the same time. Julie was afraid of being used or heartbroken. A pokémon wouldn't do that. There was only genuine love present, Lilly excluded, but it's why she loved Midnight so much-- maybe a little too much. She hoped it wasn't a case of delusion and desperation.

--

After what felt like hours, her class finally let out, and Julie wasted no time exiting the classroom. Midnight still wasn't by her locker, and she wasn't worried. She just missed him. She had to use the restroom before her last class started, which was in ten minutes.

As Julie turned a corner down the hallway and past a row of lockers, she saw Midnight strolling down the same hall towards her. "Mmh!" Julie prevented herself from saying anything since other classes were in session, so it came out as a quiet hum. Only a few students were by their lockers, on their phones, and whatnot before they too walked off. She met Midnight by the door of the girl's restroom and kneeled in front of him. "Hey..." Julie looked around to make sure the halls were empty before briefly embracing his neck with her arms and giving him a light kiss on the nose.

Midnight responded by subtly licking her chin, then wriggling his way out of her hold while brushing his cheek against her legs and thighs.

That was new. He likely wanted more attention, but Julie hadn't seen Midnight act this way before. She giggled quietly and looked at him. "Yes?"

Then, Midnight gave her an odd gaze. He fixated his eyes on her face, and his bushy tail swayed from side to side.

"What is it?..." Julie began feeling nervous from his hard gaze. She didn't know what he wanted.

"Umb..." Midnight was trying to get it across to Julie that he liked her, that he really liked her-- as if she were a potential mate. Not only was Midnight unable to be around pokémon most of the time since he was at this school almost every day, but Julie was perfect to him. Not only her body and overall attractiveness, but she was always so kind to him.

"I've... gotta get to my next class, hun. See you later." Julie leaned down to give him his usual kiss on the forehead, but this time, Midnight leaned up and moved his face, so his lips instead connected with Julie's. A soft murmur escaped her mouth out of surprise, and her eyes dilated, her cheeks flushed. Julie sincerely hoped no one saw that. She took Midnight's furry cheeks within her delicate hands' palms and held their kiss for a few seconds.

After pulling away, she wiped her mouth with her wrist and softly exhaled while gazing down at the umbreon she just shared a kiss with-- her first one at that. Julie was beyond late for class at this point. She didn't care but still had to get to it. "S-Sorry, Midnight, I'll see you again after my classes, okay? Promise..." Her cheeks still felt hot. She'd take care of it while in the restroom. Julie's hands slipped from his cheeks as she stood and entered it, but not without looking back at Midnight.
