Selene sat at the bar, twirling the drink in its glass, listening to the subtle clink of the ice, before the hairs on the back of her neck stood upright. She sensed, rather than heard, the bear of a man behind her, as he roughly pushed her from behind, jostling her.

"Sir," Selene spoke quietly, her eyes half lidded in irritation. "Please cease and desist. I'm a police officer, off duty, just trying to have a drink..."

"I know what you are, good thing I don't hit women -" He slurred, then shoved her again. "A bitch on the other hand -"

This time, Selene was prepared, as she twisted about, gripping his wrist and wrenching it. He screamed as she forced him down in a wrist lock, driving his head down onto the bar with more force than she realised. There come a loud thud, before his body crumpled to the floor.

Selene breathed out, calming her nerves as adrenaline tried to override her control, as she reached behind her and retrieved her hand cuffs, quickly locking them around his wrists as he moaned and shuddered and she stood there, staring, a single tremor rippling down her spine.

"You've earned yourself a wonderful visit with the magistrate -" Selene snorted as she pulled him up off the floor. "Assaulting a police officer, drunk and disorderly..."

Others in the bar watched, as she hauled him outside, the door swinging closed with a thud.

Driving herself to the hospital, Selene was quickly seen by the doctor, who washed and sterilised her hand, before shaking her head slowly.

“Constable, what on earth did you do?”

“I enforced the law - “ Selene laughed weakly, then winced as the Doctor injected anaesthetic into Selene's hand. “Rumours have been swirling and getting out of hand. Really, it's ridiculous – if we don't face the truth of it - “

“There will be blood in the streets - “ Finished the Doctor.

As she waited a few moments for the anaesthetic to take hold, then gripped a pair of long tweezers, carefully plucking shards of glass out of Selene's hand.

“Ow, that really hurt!” Selene yelped, flinching.

Frowning, the Doctor looked at Selene. “Are you sure? Your hand should be numb and - “

“I felt it Doctor, please, be a little more gentle, can you?”

“Sorry - “ Whispered the Doctor, frowning as she plucked another shard, dropping it into a kidney dish. “So, any leads yet? I confess, I'm more than worried myself, what with the media and then the murders and - “

“We have multiple – OW - “ Selene flinched again.

“Sorry, last piece, I swear!”

“Multiple leads and avenues of inquiry we're following up. What we don't need, is for the townsfolk to get ideas into their heads! We're the police here, we know what we're doing, we're trained and prepared – so why can't they let us do our jobs?”

“They're scared - “ Sighed the Doctor, as she reached up and tugged the collar of her uniform a little tighter, then winced.

“You okay Doc? You look a little under the weather.” Selene looked closer at the Doctor, who smiled and nodded wearily. “Just – not sleeping well and -”

Selene froze, something alerting her to danger – before the Doctor flinched involuntarily and stepped back, eyes widening.

“I know that...how do I know that scent - “ Selene frowned. “It's...”

Terrified, the Doctor turned and run, the door slamming back against its stops as Selene was still shaking her head as something flickered in her mind.

“You're a...oh my god - “ Selene gasped, eyes widening. “You're one of them!”

Leaping to her feet, Selene hit the closing door with her shoulder then ran into the corridor, but the Doctor was gone – only a startled nurse who lay on the floor, folders and paperwork scattered around her, looked up in surprise and fright.

“Where'd she go?” Selene snapped at the bewildered nurse.

“Doctor - “ Stammered the Nurse, then pointed down the hallway.

“Thank you!” Selene shouted.

Selene ran down the hall, before slamming through the double doors and skidding to a halt. Another hallway – but this time – she had no idea where the false Doctor had gone...or what she had been up too in the Hospital...

That night, overdosed on pain medication and half a bottle of Southern Spirit, Selene tossed and turned restlessly. Her dreams haunted by images, fragments, flashes that come to her mind and vanished as she mentally grasped for them.

“No...no - “ Selene murmured, her hands alternating between gripping the coverlet and releasing it.

She was oblivious, as four curled claws gripped the bedroom door handle awkwardly, then carefully pulled it open. Stealthfully, the claws pushed open the door. It stood crouched over, its scarred and torn pelt rippling as one ear flicked forwards as the Kangaroo's eyes adjusted to the darkness. A faint breath come from its nostrils, before it glared, then shook its head. A strong, pungent scent filled the room, overpowering his sense of smell and making his eyes begin welling with tears.

As he crept closer, he used to paws to wipe clear his eyes, but he could do nothing about the strong scent. He didn't need his sense of smell to kill – not at all – his eyes narrowed and a cruel, predatory smile split his muzzle as he looked at the sleeping human who lay on the narrow bed.

First though – oh my yes, first – he would have some fun...

Selene shrieked as she was snapped awake as something heavy jumped on her.

In her panic, she fought it, feeling strong muscles beneath fur – and it growled cruelly and grasped her wrists in a crushing grip. Its strong legs slid either side of her hips and the thick, muscular tail lay between her thighs and calves.

He leaned back, using his position and weight to pin her to the bed, before he glared down at her, his sadistic smile all the wider as his eyes narrowed, before his lips curled back and his sharp fangs glistened wetly with saliva.

Selene's eyes widened as she stared up into the scarred and battered muzzle of the kangaroo who snorted through his nostrils and tightened his painful grip.

“Get...get off me!” Selene screamed, struggling, but her efforts were for nought.

He grunted, Selene realising he was laughing at her, as she struggled futilely beneath him. He had her pinned, there was no doubt – he knew exactly what he was doing – and in seconds, Selene moaned in terror – as she realised what he was about to do to her...

“Get...off - “ Selene gasped, then she shuddered as he snickered and thrust twice – driving his length into her body and arching his spine inwards, an unmistakable look of pleasure on his muzzle as his head tilted back and he thrust again and again..

That was just the moment Selene needed, as she felt his weight shift momentarily – then she slammed her knee up into his hip. He screamed and flinched, pulling away which allowed her to wrap her legs around his tail and violently twist herself. He fell off the bed and his head smacked on the floor with a loud thud – before he lay there gasping and twitching.

Selene rolled over, her hand diving beneath her pillow, before she brought it out and held her police issue glock in both hands – pointed directly at him.

“You fucking bastard - “ Selene snarled.

He rose, groggily, then shook his head and stared at her, before his dewlaps curled back in a feral snarl of rage and anger.

“Go to hell - “ Selene shrieked, then pulled the trigger...

As fast as she pulled the trigger, the bullets tore into and through him, as he rocked from the strikes, then his paws clutched at his chest from which blood gushed. He looked down, then at her, as his muscles tensed and he prepared to leap – before Selene emptied the magazine almost point blank into him.

Scartail grunted, then gasped, as blood flecked his muzzle and he stumbled backwards, partially from the impact of the bullets tearing into and through his body, as he shook his head and wobbled for a moment, then fell sideways onto the floor, kicking and convulsing – until at last, death stilled his violent convulsions, blood pooling around him.

Selene stood there, her fingers squeezing the trigger – until her rational mind gripped her and she stumbled backwards, falling hard onto the bed, the empty glock clattering to the ground as she sat there, staring at the kangaroo who had just tried to rape her – and was certain – he would have killed her...

*

Selene sat there, stunned, the glass in her hand, the contents still as a frozen lake. Her mind whirled, trying to make sense out of what had happened, before her resolve broke, and she clutched her mobile phone – then rang the first person she knew, would hopefully, help her.

“Amanda - “ Selene began, then she broke, her tears coming thick and fast. “Help, please...”

*

“What the fuck - “ Amanda gasped, as she stepped into Selene's room, her eyes wide and heart rate climbing.

“He...he tried.” Selene stammered, before she fought to compose herself. “He is - “

“Oh, honey - “ Amanda gasped, then pulled Selene close, before she frowned. “Wait, he's a...one of them?”

For the first time in over a decade, Selene's composure fell away, and she clutched Amanda in a crushing grasp, her tears flowing and great choking sobs coming from her throat.

“Hey girl, easy, easy...” Amanda whispered, holding Selene tight. “It's all over, he won't hurt you anymore...”

After Selene cried herself out, Amanda sat her down at the table, giving Selene a strong cup of tea to drink, whilst she covered the dead Buck and removed his body.

“You...wait, you said he was a - “ Amanda whispered, eyes widening as she looked down at her bloodied hands.

“I don't think it works that way - “ Selene admitted. “I think, I'm no expert on their kind...I don't know who would be!”

“I don't want to turn into – into that...” Amanda shuddered.

Selene sniffled, then dried her eyes and shuddered, before taking another drink of the tea.

“I'm certain it doesn't work like that...”

*

Selene and Amanda buried the dead Therian deep in the woods, in an unmarked grave.

“Nobody will find this bastard here - “ Selene growled, as she spat on the ground, then used torn branches to flick leaves and small sticks over it.

“Undoubtedly...think he, gods, it does my head in – what would drive such a creature too...”

“I have no idea, any of the Therian's I've seen, they've been – well – shy, withdrawn, quiet and gentle creatures. I've never seen this side of them! Could they, you know – be human form and nice and calm and - “

“Selene? Honey, let it go, please! He's dead, you're – well, you're scared, he hurt you – tried...”

“I want answers - “Selene snarled, her fingers curling into fists. “One of those fucking bastards sent him...and I want to know why...”
