This was an idea for a story prompted by Xing (https://xing.sofurry.com/)) It's the first installment of what will hopefully be more. My 'creativity' comes in short bursts so we'll see how this goes. I felt like I'd finally written enough to post, so I hope you all enjoy! Please let me know what you think :)

“Initiating cryogenic defrost."

“Dr. Crowley, what are his vitals?"

“BP is 120/80 Admiral West."

The glass was foggy, or was it my vision? I pulled the mask from my face, I was weak and disoriented. Tubes protruded from my arms. There was beeping and noises all around, I could hear muffled voices on the other side of the glass. Where am I? I had no idea what was going on.

“Doctor Crowley," Admiral West called out, “Open it up and get him out of there!"

The seal of the door popped and it opened. The lights were bright and I could hear more voices, excited murmurs seemed to emanate all around me. I shielded my eyes from the light as I tried to step out of the chamber.

“1828, please let me steady you," what seemed like the hairiest hand grabbed my arm and helped me out of the chamber. What's 1828 mean? I don't think that was my name…I was ushered to a chair, all but one of the tubes was taken out, into which they started pumping me full of some liquid.

“What's….going on?" I had closed my eyes, it was easier then holding up my hand. I was weak and couldn't see very well, my vision was blurred.

“1828, I am Dr. Crowley of the Corbis Archeological Society. We found you here on our dig and contacted the government. Under Admiral West's instructions we were able to successfully defrost you from you cryogenically frozen state."

Whatever they were feeding me through the tube was slowly bringing back some strength and mental capacity. “Wha…why do you keep saying 1828?" You wanted to say your name but at this moment it escaped you.

“That is your pod number sir," Dr. Crowley replied. His voice was smooth and calming as he placed a blanket over my bare shoulders. “Please, 1828 rest. After you've had a bag or two of Eden you'll feel better."

The chair I was in laid back, it was comfortable and the soft blanket felt warm on my naked flesh. I fell to sleep.

“1828, how are you feeling?" It was Dr. Crowley's gentle voice rising you from sleep. “1828 you're suffering from cryogenic sickness. You will be weak for a few weeks, even with the help of our recovery drugs and you're suffering from temporary blindness or blurred vision."

“Yeah my vision is definitely blurry."

“That's to be expected. How are you feeling otherwise? Temporary amnesia isn't uncommon either, some recover faster than others."

“Better Dr. Crowley. I think I remember my name..."

Dr. Crowley interrupted, “Great 1828! We are currently working on decrypting the files from the computer your machine was on, so if you remember your identity we will be able to verify it and hopefully provide you with more information as well as learn more about your species. We are quite excited about your discovery."

I could hear the happiness in his tone of voice. My discovery? My species? What the fuck is going on? Why does this guy care about me? All I could muster was “What?"

“1828…you must not know from your amnesia…you, a human – Homo sapiens – are an endangered species. You have been for millennia. The few that are left are kept in labs for reproductive purposes, however the gene pool is becoming smaller due to your short lifespan. That's why finding you in your working chamber with your computer's mainframe still running is, quite frankly, a miracle. We're hoping to excavate more information regarding your daily life during your time on the planet and hopefully can see when it is you're from exactly. Our records don't show a human cache at the location we found you in, which means you're either really old, or perhaps a very wealthy person from the past."

I could hear a slight chuckle in Dr. Crowley's voice but I was confused further. When I was from? “Well Dr. Crowley," I responded, “If I'm an endangered species I'll take a blind guess and say I'm probably not talking to a human."

“No, I am not a human…" Dr. Crowley's voice trailed off, “But I do have human in my long forgotten past supposedly. I believe most of us do."

“Who is 'us' and what are you?" I demanded.

“Well, I am a Homo lupines. In ancient history, human DNA was spliced with lupine DNA and a new race created, legend says it was in hopes of furthering humanity. However, we and other homo-animal species soon overtook the homo sapiens due to disease and war amongst themselves. Now endangered, we're working to save the last of the human DNA as well as uncover their past, and you 1828, I have a feeling will be key to our discoveries."

My mind was reeling. Was he actually telling me he was a human and a wolf? What the fuck was going on? I know for a fact there was no such species whenever I was around. Even if there was, all this information seemed completely foreign to my amnesic brain. Deep down in my gut I knew this was the first time I'd ever heard of anything like this. I felt relieved that I couldn't see what anything or anyone actually looked like, I needed time to process this information. Was I really one of the last humans on Earth?
