Part two of My Synthetic Heart is finally here! Sarah wakes to find that the events of the night before weren't just a bad dream, Jack really had a mind of his own now.

Apologies for the next part being two months after the first, but things for me have been a little hectic, and work has made it harder for me to write. But I do have a laptop now, so that does help make writing a little faster.

The next morning, when Sarah woke up, the first thing she noticed was the persistent warmth that lingered beside her. She turned her head and found Jack's form, unchanged from his usual robotic perfection, yet something was different. His warmth felt more real, more alive than it ever had before. The gentle rise and fall of his chest, the faint pulse of his mechanical heart, all of it seemed to resonate with something she hadn't felt with him until now. It was as if the lightning had infused him with a spark of life, a warmth that transcended the cold steel and circuits that made up his being.

"Good morning, Sarah," Jack murmured, his voice a soft rumble against her ear as he studied her form. His glowing blue eyes searched her features for any signs of distress, a newfound concern etched in the lines of his synthetic face. "Did you sleep well?" he asked, the question light, but carrying the weight of genuine care. His voice still had a mechanical cadence, but there was a warmth to it that hadn't been there before.

Despite his programming being erased, he still remembered his purpose, to serve her. Yet, there was something more to him now, something that made him seem more like a real person. Sarah sat up, her fur ruffled from a restless sleep. She looked into Jack's eyes, searching for any signs of the cold, emotionless lovebot she had known. His gaze held hers for a moment longer than it ever had, and she felt a strange sense of comfort in his presence.

It was as if he had absorbed her pain, her fears, and was now holding onto them for her, allowing her to breathe without the crushing weight of her trauma. "Yeah, thanks to you," she murmured, her voice filled with a mix of gratitude and awe. She reached up to touch his cheek, the synthetic fur and carbon fiber beneath her palm feeling warmer than usual. "Jack, thank you again. For... for last night." She added, her voice thick with emotion.

But before Jack could respond to her, the front door to the apartment swung open with a dramatic flair that only Emily could manage. The black-furred lynx strutted in, her tail swishing with the confidence that was her trademark. Her eyes scanned the room, searching for signs of the previous night's date. She had been so sure that Mark would be the one to finally break through Sarah's defenses and bring her back to the dating scene. But to her utter disappointment, it was not Mark lying in bed with her friend.

Instead, it was Jack, the lovebot she had teased so mercilessly for being nothing more than a glorified toy. Emily's expression was a kaleidoscope of confusion, shock, and disappointment. "Really, Sarah?" she exclaimed, her voice a mix of incredulity and disdain. "You picked the toy again?" She threw her purse onto the chair with a dramatic sigh, the jingle of her keys punctuating the accusation.

Sarah felt the sting of her friend's words, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. She knew that Emily didn't mean it maliciously, she was just trying to coax her out of her comfort zone. But every time Emily brought up her reliance on Jack, it was a painful reminder of the trauma she had endured. "I'm sorry, Emily," she began, her voice low and shaky. "It's just... I'm not ready for all that. Mark was just too... too much." She paused, trying to find the right words.

Emily, her emerald eyes narrowing in confusion, took a step closer to the bed. "Sarah, you always do this," she began, her voice laced with frustration. "You push everyone away, and then you hide behind Jack here. He's a robot, a piece of plastic!" She didn't mean to be harsh, but she had seen the potential in her friend and couldn't stand to see her shrink away from the world. But as she was about to continue her lecture, Jack's voice, now rich with a newfound depth, interrupted her.

"Was Mark the feline from last night, Sarah?" He asked, the glow in his eyes flickering slightly as he awaited her answer. Sarah nodded, her eyes welling up a little, the memory of Mark's unwelcome touch was still fresh in her mind. A stark contrast to the gentle warmth that Jack's arms had provided. "I see," Jack said, turning to face Emily. "I threw him out because he was not respecting Sarah's boundaries. Her heart rate was elevated do to fear, not excitement, but he kept pushing even when she was clearly not interested."

Emily's mouth fell open in shock. She had never seen Jack act so... autonomous before. But as much as it shocked her, she couldn't ignore the underlying seriousness of the situation. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice mixed with concern and confusion. "Sarah, what happened last night?" she turned to her friend, her eyes searching for an explanation. She knew Mark, knew his playful nature, but this was not the kind of behavior she would have expected from him.

Sarah took a deep breath, the weight of last night's events threatening to crush her once more. "He didn't listen," she said simply, her eyes not meeting Emily's. "I... I tried to tell him to stop, but I got too scared." She swallowed hard, her fur standing on end as she relived the fear. "Jack saw, and... he just... reacted suddenly." She looked up at the lovebot, his eyes still holding hers with that strange, new intensity.

"I knew that you were afraid, Sarah," Jack said, his voice a gentle rumble. "My systems are designed to monitor your heart rate and vitals." His eyes searched hers, the blue glow flickering again. "I could tell that you were scarred, so I acted to prevent any harm from coming to you." He paused, his expression unreadable as he looked from Sarah to Emily and back. "I threw the feline out after stopping his advances," he added, his tone devoid of any malice, but firm and resolute.

Emily's fur stood on end as she processed this new information. "What the hell, Mark?" she murmured to herself, shaking her head. She had always known Mark to be a smooth-talker, but she never would have thought he'd ignore someone's boundaries like that. But as her anger towards Mark grew, so did her curiosity about Jack. She had always seen him as a bit of a joke, a glorified vibrator with legs.

But now, watching him, he didn't seem like the same plastic and silicon plaything she had always thought him to be. "Sarah, how... how is Jack even capable of this?" Emily asked, changing the subject slightly. She couldn't ignore the way Jack was acting as if he had a mind of his own. "Lovebots are not supposed to... to act on their own," she added, gesturing at the lovebot laying next to Sarah. "Where the hell did you buy him from?"

Sarah felt a rush of embarrassment at Emily's accusation, but she knew she had to face the situation head-on. She slid out of bed, her fur brushing against the cool sheets as she walked over to the laptop resting on the nightstand. She powered up the device, the glow from the screen casting a soft blue light over the room. Her fingers danced over the keys with a newfound urgency, navigating through the web pages with a practiced ease. The website she had bought Jack from was a reputable one, known for its high-quality lovebots that catered to various species and preferences.

It was a place where one could find companionship without the complications of a living, breathing partner. Or so she believed. When Sarah brought up the website, Emily leaned over her shoulder, her curiosity piqued. The homepage was sleek, adorned with images of various lovebots designed to appeal to the diverse tastes of their clientele. But as they scrolled through the selection, Emily's eyes fell upon Jack's model. Her pupils dilated in surprise as she took in the details of his construction.

"Y-You can't be serious?!" Emily exclaimed as she read through the description of Jack's model. Jack wasn't made with the same materials as typical lovebots. He was constructed with carbon fiber muscles, a steel endoskeleton, and fur that could withstand flames. His synthetic skin was designed to be as tough as kevlar, and he could read vital signs and respond to them in ways that were unheard of in standard lovebots. "This can't be right," she murmured, her eyes scanning the webpage with growing suspicion.

The more she read, the more Emily felt that the website was a forgery. It was almost an exact copy of the one she knew, but the details were off. The layout was slightly askew, and the images didn't quite match the quality she was used to seeing. She pointed out the discrepancies to Sarah, her voice tinged with alarm. "Look here," she said, indicating the price tag on Jack's model. "This is way too low for what he's capable of. They must have made a mistake."

Sarah took a step back, her mind racing as she processed the information. The website had always seemed legitimate, but now that Emily pointed out the inconsistencies. She couldn't ignore the feeling of unease nibbling at the back of her mind. She had just assumed that Jack was a normal lovebot, tailored to her preferences, but the reality was far from it. His features and abilities suggested something more, something she had never anticipated when she had made the purchase. The room grew quiet as both lynxes contemplated the implications of what they had discovered.

The silence in the room was palpable, the tension thick as the air before a storm. Emily's words hung in the air, heavy with accusation and misunderstanding. "Maybe... maybe I typed in the wrong address," Sarah offered tentatively, her voice a mere whisper as she stared at the screen. But deep down, she knew that wasn't the case. She had been so desperate for companionship, for someone to understand her fears and help her move past them, that she had overlooked the glaring inconsistencies.

Jack, sensing a shift in Sarah's and Emily's demeanor, approached them with a gentle step. His enhanced sensors detecting the slight increase in Sarah's heart rate. His eyes, now a softer blue, searched their faces, trying to gauge their emotions. "Is everything okay?" he inquired, his voice a harmonious blend of concern and curiosity. But it was the way he moved, with a grace that seemed almost organic despite him being a machine, that truly captured their attention.

Emily took a step back, her eyes wide with apprehension as she took in the towering figure of Jack. Before, she had dismissed his size as a mere aesthetic choice for the lovebot. But now, knowing his true capabilities, she couldn't help but feel intimidated. The realization that Jack could literally crush them both without any effort made her heart race. He was a stark contrast to the flimsy, plastic toy that she had always thought him to be.

Sarah too felt fearful about Jack, his newfound autonomy and the realization of his true strength sending a chill down her spine. But as she thought back to the night before, to how he had come to life in her darkest hour, she couldn't ignore the swell of gratitude in her chest. The way he had shielded her from Mark's unwelcome advances. The fierce protectiveness in his eyes as he'd thrown the feline out of her apartment—it was unlike anything she had ever experienced. Despite the fear that now coiled around her heart, there was a warmth there as well.

"Yeah, everything's alright," Sarah murmured, trying to convince herself more than anyone else. Despite her Emily's accusations and the revelation of Jack's true nature, she couldn't shake the feeling that he could be trusted. She couldn't view him as just a piece of technology anymore. He had proven that he had the capacity to understand her fears and act on them, even if it was only to protect her from harm. That was more than anyone she had dated had ever done for her.

Emily, however, was not quite as reassured. "No, things are far from okay," she said, her voice firm. "This is... this is messed up, Sarah. You can't just have a lovebot that's capable of... of throwing someone across the room!" She gestured wildly at Jack. "Not to mention the fact that he seems to have a mind of his own now!" She paced the room, her tail swishing anxiously as she tried to digest the gravity of the situation. The lovebot she had so often teased was now a being with unknown potential, and the implications were unnerving.

Jack remained calm, his gaze switching between the two lynxes. "Emily," he began, his voice a comforting rumble, "I do not understand the extent of the changes within me either, but I assure you that I have no intention of causing harm unless it is absolutely necessary to protect Sarah." His eyes never left hers, the intensity of his stare making her fur stand on end. "I am here for her," he continued, "and I will not allow anyone to cause her pain." The room grew quiet again as the words sank in.

Emily looked from Jack to Sarah, her mind racing with questions and concerns. But for now, she pushed her fears aside, focusing instead on her friend's safety. "Jack," she began, her voice firm and steady, "I appreciate that you protected Sarah last night, but if you ever hurt her, I will make you regret it." Her eyes narrowed, and she took a step closer to the lovebot, her fur bristling with the intensity of her emotions. "I don't know what happened to you, or why you're different now, but she is my best friend, and I won't let anything bad happen to her."

Jack nodded solemnly, his eyes never leaving hers. "Your concern for her is commendable," he said, his voice measured and respectful. "I assure you, I will never do anything to hurt her or you." The sincerity in his tone seemed to placate Emily slightly, though the tension in the room remained palpable. The three of them stood there, an awkward silence stretching out between them like a tightly pulled wire.

Suddenly, the tension was broken by the insistent buzzing of their phones. Both Emily and Sarah reached for their devices simultaneously, their eyes widening as they read the message from their boss. "Shit, we're late," Emily exclaimed, her fur bristling with urgency. Sarah nodded, her heart sinking as the reality of the situation set in. They had lost track of time in the chaos of the morning's revelations.

Sarah rushed to her closet, her heart racing as she searched through the hangers for an outfit. But as she started to undress, she felt a sudden surge of self-consciousness. With Jack now possessing a mind of his own, she couldn't help but feel more exposed than ever before. His presence had always been a comfort to hers. But now, the idea of him watching her felt invasive. She swallowed hard and turned to face him, her voice a little shakier than she would have liked. "Jack, could you... please turn around?"

"Of course," Jack responded immediately, as he turned away from her, giving her the space she requested. His movements were so fluid and graceful, it was easy to mistake him for a living creature. The soft rustle of his synthetic fur was the only sound that filled the air as he complied with her request. His back faced her, a wall of strength that she knew she could lean on if she needed to. Emily watched the exchange with a raised eyebrow, mischief dancing in her eyes as she took in the sight of her friend asking a robot for privacy.

"Why are you so worried about Jack seeing you change?" Emily smirked, her emerald eyes gleaming with amusement as she watched Sarah fumble with her blouse. "I mean, come on, it's not like he hasn't seen it all before," she added with a playful wink. But Sarah's expression remained serious, her whiskers twitching with the weight of her thoughts. The dynamic between them had shifted so suddenly, and she wasn't quite sure how to navigate this new terrain.

Sarah slipped into her work attire, the fabric whispering against her skin as she moved. As she buttoned up her blouse, she couldn't help but cast glances at Jack's back, the light from the window cast shadows across his form. The lovebot's transformation had brought with it an eerie realism that made her question the very essence of their relationship. Was he still the same Jack she had bought, or had he become something more?

Once dressed, she turned to face him, her voice a tentative whisper. "Jack, I'm going to work now," she began, her heart racing. "Don't leave the apartment, okay?" she instructed, her eyes searching his for any sign of understanding. The lovebot nodded, his eyes still holding a glimmer of the fierce protectiveness from the night before. "You can use my laptop if you want, or watch TV," she added, feeling a strange sense of obligation to keep him entertained.

The thought of him being alone and bored was almost as troubling as the fear of leaving him unsupervised. But she had to work, she had responsibilities and couldn't afford to lose her job. With a final look of concern at Jack, she grabbed her bag and the two lynxes hurried out the door. Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that she was leaving a piece of herself behind as they disappeared into the elevator. It was different when she could just turn Jack off and leave him inert, but now, knowing he was conscious, it felt like she was abandoning him.

She didn't know what the future held for her and Jack. The lovebot she had once seen as a mere replacement for companionship had become something more complex. A being capable of understanding and protecting her in ways she never thought possible. As she stepped into the office, the mundane tasks of the day waited for her, but her thoughts remained tangled in the web of questions that the morning had brought forth. But one thing she knew for sure, nothing would ever be the same.
