Self-Inflicted
#26 of Midnight
A female teen with only a few months left of high school falls into an intimate relationship with an umbreon on the school's grounds. She has to juggle this and high school itself, all while finding herself as a person. Playing it safe is key.
This story was the first I've ever written. I've edited it a lot since the initial release but kept its original structure.

Chapter 30: Midnight & Calda.M umbreon x F flareon.
"You have thirty minutes to answer thirty questions," the professor said while walking up and down the rows of desks and handing stacks of paper to the last student in each one so they could pass it down. "That is one minute per question, which is more than enough time. I only want to see this sheet and a pencil on your desk. Anything more and that's a zero. As usual, you may begin on my say."
Julie sat beside Angie in their usual seats, wearing her eeveelution jacket, while Angie was in a light gray tee with white and black dotted swirly designs and a popular clothing brand logo above the upper right breast. They neared the end of class and would take the quiz to close out.
What Julie found odd since the beginning of class, was that Angie had been glancing at her off and on with no words, and she'd never exhibited that kind of behavior. Julie had tried putting it off, but it was too frequent to ignore. She just didn't know how to bring it up. It wasn't a big deal anyway.
"Time to ace this, yeah?" Angie closed her notebook and put it in her backpack on the floor.
Julie did the same, grabbing the last two sheets from the guy beside her and handing one to Angie. "Mhm, easy A. Thank you for telling me we had it coming up. I studied all morning."
"I try to be a reliable friend." Angie glanced at Julie's face, mouth, then legs before shifting her eyes back to her paper. She saw nothing but her smooth skin under her jeans.
"Go ahead and begin," the professor said, standing in front of the room to watch the class. "After you have completed the quiz, you may set it on my desk and dismiss yourselves."
Julie scanned the quiz and saw a lot of writing ahead of her. None of the questions were bubble-in or true or false. She had to answer in her words, either one or a couple of sentences.
She wrote her name and date at the top of the page and took a couple of minutes to read over every question on the test to get a good idea of the scope of the content and an approach, then started on the first question: 'What is the name of the research camp on Florio Island?' Easy. "Laboratory of... Ecology and... Natural Sciences," Julie whispered while writing on the line.
She held onto everything she studied and wished she could do that with every subject since it'd make her life twice as easy, but what could she say? History was Julie's calling.
She finished her quiz within the next fifteen minutes and was looking it over to ensure her answers were accurate. She was always nervous but felt that she'd pass with flying colors. This was about the only subject Julie truly felt confident in.
Angie was stuck on number twenty, meanwhile. She'd breezed through the past nineteen questions and most that were ahead of it, but the answer to this one just wouldn't come to mind. She looked at Julie several times, and just as she was getting up, Angie reached and tapped her arm.
Julie stopped, then sat again and looked at her.
"Sorry, but do you have twenty... before you go? Sorry." Angie didn't want Julie to end up dropping her as a study partner. Angie just tended to be forgetful.
She subtly looked up and saw the professor at the back of the room to watch the students in the farthest rows. Now would be a good time. "...Sure," Julie whispered. She wasn't a cheater and typically didn't like helping others do so, even though she always gave in and shot Alyssa test and homework answers in high school. Besides, Angie was her friend too.
Julie scanned her own sheet and found the question: 'Who was the first person to traverse several of Lental's islands hundreds of years ago and record the environments and pok_e_mon he came across?' She leaned slightly toward Angie and skimmed her sheet too, noticing another blank line. "It's Captain Vince."
Angie smirked a little and wrote it down. "Thanks, Julie."
"I try to be a reliable one too," she grinned. "What about question twenty-five?"
Julie was on her stomach in bed wearing a comfy tee at 9 p.m., typing an essay for oceanography on her laptop with Midnight beside her. His rings and her screen were her only sources of light.
She popped a red gummy ursa into her mouth from a plastic pouch beside her and sighed. She was five hundred words in so far. "This is one of the most boring essays I've had to frickin' write."
Midnight looked up at her, taking a green gummy that she put in front of him. If he recalled from her words, she had to research three aquatic pokémon and write about their behaviors and functions in the sea.
He turned his head to her screen upon hearing a short melody and seeing a pop-up.
"Finally," Julie yawned. She was getting sleepy but had been waiting on Alyssa to video call before bed, so she'd used the paper to pass the time. They never called this late, but Julie really wanted to talk to her after everything that's happened. She answered it and saw Alyssa take up her screen.
She looked tired too, with slightly frazzled hair. "Hey, it's good to see you," Julie grinned a little, putting another gummy in her mouth.
"Yeah, nearly forgot how you looked," Alyssa returned it. "Your mom called earlier today."
"I know. How'd it go?"
"It was cool. She's gentle. She told me the company would be nice and that I'm welcome to stay for as long as I please, but I want to be out in a month tops. I'd hate to be a freeloader." Alyssa still felt relatively uncomfortable going through with all of this, but she was close to Julie and knew her mother well enough.
"What are you going to do with the time?" Julie understood how she felt. She'd act the same in that situation and stay long enough to get on her feet.
"I'll have to double down on my passion and move quicker, maybe look for a starter job. It's so overwhelming. I feel like the carpet suddenly got pulled from under me, and now I'm freefalling into adulthood." Alyssa looked to the side. "I don't want to have to crawl back to my parents if this doesn't work out, but..."
Julie sighed. "It will work out. Just do your best and stay strong. I know I'm not there, but I'll do what I can to help."
"I'll try... but hold up. I want to put this aside for a minute. Can you tell me what happened that night?" Current events tucked it away, but Alyssa hadn't forgotten.
"Oh..." Julie hadn't been thinking about it. To be fair, it didn't make her feel as awful as it did. "I'm just going to summarize."
"Sure."
Julie could feel Midnight's eyes on her, and he got closer to her arm, likely for comfort. "So, I go to the party with Anna. I separate and run into a group to hang out with, then end up sitting and talking with a girl. I try beer that she gave me- despise it. It was all going fine until this creepy guy appeared and sat next to me. He started talking to both of us, but his focus was on me, and after she left, he was prodding me for information, like my relationship status and age..." Julie was almost embarrassed to bring up the next part. "He ends up offering me a drink that he must have messed with earlier, and I drank some... It turns out he drugged it."
"Huh?" Alyssa widened her eyes slightly. "What happened? Did he-"
"no, Anna saved me and told him off, along with the host, thank goodness. I passed out later on in a bed there and was watched until morning."
Alyssa took a deep breath. "Okay, good. I was about to be so fucking pissed... but you told me you wouldn't-"
"yeah, yeah, I know," Julie's tone softened. "I said I wouldn't drink. I said I'd have sense, and I'm an idiot for sipping anything someone offered me that my gut was warning me about, but I've learned my lesson. I'm not even going to a party ever again." Julie heard her phone vibrate beside her but would ignore it for now.
Alyssa wouldn't berate her, but her heart was beating harder than usual, and she could murder that man with thoughts alone just for the attempt. "I'm just relieved you're okay. It'd be the first time I'd end up hysterical had it gone any other way."
"I'm working past it, so I'm fine. I'm still enjoying my classes and time at this school. I took a quiz today and did well too."
"And your boyfriend?" Alyssa smirked.
"And my boyfriend," Julie grinned and tilted the screen down to show him lying against her.
"Bre," he greeted while looking at the screen.
Alyssa always liked seeing them together. They were an unusual and adorable couple. Human or not, she was happy for Julie.
"You think you two could kiss real quick?"
"Huh?"
"It can be a small peck. I just want to see the love."
"Uh... okay." Julie wasn't opposed but didn't expect a question like that from Alyssa.
Midnight didn't mind either, especially after they'd mated in the laundry room. He also knew Alyssa and that she and Julie were close. He leaned up slightly and eyed her.
Julie met him and puckered up, pressing her lips to his and kissing him, which tasted sweet and vice versa since they were snacking on gummies.
Alyssa broke a smile while watching them hold it for a moment. "Yeah, that was as cute as I imagined it," she said after Julie pulled away.
Julie giggled and looked back at her. "Alright, you can bring Alyssa back now."
"Whatever," she chuckled. "I can admire my best friend's relationship sometimes."
"I want to see more soft Alyssa, though. It's a miracle." Julie ate another gummy and gave one to Midnight.
"Now that's a stretch," she yawned. "I might go get ready for bed. I'm glad we got to see each other again."
Julie yawned after her. "Me too. We needed to catch up. I'll sleep soon. Good night?"
"Yeah, good night... and thank you for the help, Julie." It relieved Alyssa of most of the fear and stress she'd felt at first.
"You know I'd do anything for you. Talk later."
After ending the call, Julie shut her laptop and grabbed her phone. She unlocked it and saw Angie's name upon pulling down her notification bar, then opened the message: 'Hey, Julie, can we meet at the library tomorrow? Just us two to talk... Maybe around noon.'
"To talk?" Julie didn't even want to go out tomorrow, and they'd never met without it being to study. "Sorry, Midnight. Hold on." She shifted and moved her arm, forcing him to reposition and holding her phone in both hands to type: 'Why, is something wrong?' She sent it and dropped her phone, rubbing Midnight's head and folding the bag of gummies.
He liked them a lot. Midnight was a fan of anything sweet. That's why he didn't like the enigma berries when they tried them, not to mention just one bite had set his mouth on fire. Julie liked them, but she had down an entire bottle of water after eating one.
She heard her phone go off again and picked it up, her expression turning to one of puzzlement: 'No, but you'll want to be there. I'll be inside. Can we?'
She sighed and typed: 'Sure. We can, I guess.' Julie didn't want to come off as rude, but Angie was refusing to give her the slightest detail. There was no way anything between them could be that important, so she was kind of annoyed.
Her eyes shot open to her alarm going off she quickly reached for and disabled before it woke Midnight. It was twenty minutes before noon, so Julie didn't have long to get ready. She'd set it for the last minute so she could get as much sleep as possible.
Julie slid out of bed and draped the blanket over Midnight, going to her closet and throwing on blue jeans and her gray jacket. She then went to the restroom and took care of her hygiene, and was out the door in her boots. She wouldn't be gone for long. Whatever Angie wanted couldn't keep her for over fifteen minutes.
Julie was in the lobby after leaving the elevator and went down the hall past other students, pushing open the door and walking along a warm and sunny campus. Fortunately, the library was close to her dorm, around a five-minute walk. She kept north, passing by a large group of people setting up chairs and tents with a machamp lending a hand, likely for one of many campus events she didn't keep up with.
Anyway, Julie was still curious about why Angie invited her to meet for no inherent reason. If it wasn't to study, it could be about homework or something, but she would have said that over text. It just didn't add up. They didn't know each other enough.
She saw the large brick structure ahead beside the physics and astronomy building after strolling for a while, pushing open the doors when she got there and walking into silence. Julie looked around for Angie, her eyes passing rows of bookshelves, students picking out various works, and a couple of librarians helping people at the help desk or with computers nearby.
Then out of the corner of her eye, Julie saw her wave from a table across the room among several with small groups or individuals sitting at them, and she headed over.
"There you are," Angie said and grinned. "You can just sit."
Julie sat across from her and rested her forearm on the table, feeling a sense of awkwardness already.
"I know you're wondering what this is, but I'm glad you came." Angie felt anxious and relatively guilty, but not enough to change her mind. "I just had a few questions."
Julie eyed her. "But... what kind? You can ask questions over the phone."
"Not these. So to start..." Angie placed her hands on the table and held them. "Have you ever had a crush or boyfriend?"
Julie was more confused than she'd ever been, and she could never escape that question. "Uh, no, why?"
"Okay," she bit her lip to suppress a smirk. "Are you a virgin?"
"What?" She wanted to walk out. This was a complete waste of time. Julie couldn't even begin to think what the point was.
"Are you?" She stared, her fixed gaze piercing through Julie.
"...Yes, but I'm not understanding--"
"last one. How close would you say you are to your pokémon?"
She was officially irritated. "Angie, these are so weird. You're being weird, and you could have texted or called me about these pointless questions." Julie started to get up.
"Sit."
She stopped only because of how firm Angie's tone was. It caught her off guard.
Angie grabbed her phone from where it sat in her lap and set it on the table, pressing play on a video that made Julie want to die on the spot.
She chilled over and couldn't breathe, watching Midnight pound her behind a washing machine at low volume, though anyone that looked over could see it.
Meanwhile, Angie wore a huge smirk, eyeing her dark red cheeks and distraught expression. She could see in Julie's mortified eyes the life drain and her world collapse, and she heard her very subtly whimper under her breath. Angie didn't necessarily get off to her suffering, but it was almost amusing to watch Julie shatter before her eyes, knowing she was in control of it.
Julie glanced around at people everywhere before reaching for Angie's device, but Angie got to it first and snatched it away, and Julie didn't want to cause a scene in the campus library and possibly get authority involved. She struggled to get her words out, almost sounding hoarse. "I'm s- I'm sorry..." That's when the tears came, welling in her eyes. Julie was mortified. She felt lightheaded, with a knot in her throat tight enough to make her want to puke.
"I wasn't going to tell you about it at first." Angie crossed her arms. "I was going to hold onto it and probably delete it later, but then I got a better idea, and it was such a good idea, Julie. I could barely sleep because of it."
Julie shut her eyes briefly, sniffling. "Angie... what do you want?" She knew exactly where this was headed, and it was evil. "B-Because I'm begging you to delete it. I'll literally pay... anything." Julie couldn't have her past follow her here. Angie could ruin everything with that video.
"I appreciate the eagerness, but..." Angie smirked again. "And you're very pretty-- beautiful, but I don't think I want you like that, Julie."
Julie was stiff as a board, her legs shaking. She was screaming internally. Her fate rested in Angie's hands because of her own stupidity. It felt surreal.
"I want your umbreon. I replayed that video over and over, and I want to feel what you felt. Calda and I mess around, but it's not the same... I've never been penetrated."
"I..." Julie looked down, then back up. That wrenched her heart to picture. "Y-You can't have that. Angie, please."
"Why not?... See, it seems to me like you're very close to your pokémon, Julie."
Maybe telling her would help. She was desperate. "Yes, I'm with him. W-We're together. So, you understand. Forgive me... but can't you catch your own pokémon for this?"
"I don't think you're in a position to ask me anything, Julie. Wouldn't you agree?" She held up her phone for a moment. "I do get it if he's your partner, but it's what I want. I find it cute you're a couple, and that kind of makes everything better for me." It made sense why Julie's demeanor changed when she joked about Calda and Midnight being mates. Angie knew something was up.
How could she be so heartless as to come between them? "You'll ruin us, Angie. Please, I'm r-really begging you..." Julie said as tears began streaming down her cheeks, but even still, Angie kept that same smug look. "I th- I thought we were friends. H-How could you do this? I would never."
She rolled her eyes. The tears were so pathetic. "We are friends. Do you know how that shows? I'm willing to let you off easy." Angie's expression grew solemn, and she leaned in. "I'm not forcing you to do this, Julie, but if you choose not to, I will take this video to whoever I need to."
Julie winced her eyes as a headache hit her from so much stress. She was trapped. She wanted to be erased from existence or rewind time to where she could reverse being a lust-filled idiot. She felt helpless, and her expression mirrored it while she kept her eyes on Angie.
"So, you can come to room 203 tomorrow night at nine with Midnight, and I'll delete the video in front of you after I get what I want, or you can kiss this university and all of your dreams goodbye. I'll let you gauge it." Angie stood and put her phone in her pocket. "You did this to yourself. I'm just optimizing your fuck-up."
Julie watched her walk out the library. She raised her quivering hands and buried her face in them, crying silently. She couldn't control her breathing, and the pain in her chest was unbearable. Julie started feeling eyes on her, so she got up and paced to the restroom nearby, entering the women's and taking a stall. She had no idea how this would affect her and Midnight's relationship and hoped it wouldn't alter it too drastically. The more she thought about it, the worse she felt. "Hn." Julie felt her chest ache and swell, then she felt an intense burning sensation travel up and linger in her throat.
Julie turned, leaned over the toilet, and gagged, spitting up bile while hugging her stomach with her arm. "U-Ugh," she moaned and wiped the saliva from her mouth, almost hyperventilating.
It felt like her stomach was being pierced. This had to be the worst she'd ever felt. It was the nightmare she never hoped would happen.
She left the stall and went to the sinks, pushing a button on one of the nozzles and leaning down to drink some water that she swished in her mouth and spit out. Julie stood and stared into the mirror. Her face was red, her eyes bloodshot, and her cheeks were stained with tears. She looked awful. Julie had never had a panic attack before.
She couldn't think anymore. She was too exhausted and wanted to lock herself in her room, but she didn't even want to be on campus right now.
