Moving Forward, A Taint Story
dreamkeeperwolf requested a story set in my Taint series. I know he's been a fan since I first started to post stories in the setting back in 2018, and I was more than happy do write it. If anyone else is interested in having a story written in the setting, I would be open to it moving forward.
Jamie is planning on surprising his longtime girlfriend, Victoria, during their weekend getaway to his mountain house. Unaware of this, Victoria is planning a surprise of her own for Jamie and his family.
Nestled in the forest at the base of a mountain a large house and its surrounding property sat catching the last rays of the sun as it slipped over the ridge. Some people would call it a cabin, but that wasn’t a fair description. The relatively newly constructed house wouldn’t look out of place in any suburb. It wasn’t meant as a vacation house, but as a full time home, and reflected that in its design. It had power, internet, and even a land-line phone, because cell reception could be patchy this far out.
A lot of time and effort had gone into the home and surrounding area. Along with all the amenities of civilization, the plot of land had several outbuildings. A storage shed, utility shed with backup generator, and a concrete slab waiting for a large garage to be built on it. Along with the cleared area, the plot had a good deal of forest, enough to further isolate the home from the outside world.
Being far out from the world at large is exactly how Specter preferred to live. The young engineer could do a solid ninety percent of his job from his computer anywhere with the internet, and the remaining elements of his job were out on site anyway. This gave very little reason for Specter to be in the office. On top of that, his condition as a mute meant most of his workplace communication with coworkers and management was through texts and emails even in the office. Only Barb in HR could understand ASL, and she had helped to convince his superiors on the remote work plan.
Specter was done doing any real work for the day, and was instead finishing up filing reports and checking his inbox for any emergencies before logging out of the VPN. His cousins were coming up for the weekend and he was looking forward to the time with Jamie, Ollow, and their girlfriends. He only wished Katie could be there too, but his girlfriend was going to be helping her aunt move over the weekend.
Specter jumped a little when he heard the doorbell ring. It wasn’t something that happened very often this far out in the sticks. He caught his breath and finished logging out.
Jamie better be ready to install those cameras I asked for this weekend! Specter thought as he made his way to the front door. I can’t deal with surprise visitors, especially the kind that will stop by an isolated rural home.
He looked through the second peephole Jamie had put in the door. Specter was extremely short, only standing four feet tall. He would have needed a step stool otherwise to see out the peephole the door came with. This was just one of many things Jamie had done when building the house to accommodate them both.
His eyes went wide when he saw a smiling Katie leaned over looking into the lower peephole. As soon as he opened the door, Katie pulled him into a powerful hug.
“Surprise!” She smiled down at her boyfriend, “Are you happy to see me?”
Specter pulled himself out of her soft breasts and freed his hands enough to sign. “What are you doing here?”
“My Aunt had to postpone the move due to a mix-up with the truck rental company at the last minute.”
He let out a soft sigh. “You could have texted.”
“Like you would actually get it up here. And before you mention email, I decided I’d rather surprise you.” She grabbed her suitcase and pulled it inside. “I love seeing your face light up like it just did.”
Specter still was surprised he had such a beautiful and tall woman as a girlfriend. No doubt part of it was from their shared trauma in the past, but Katie stood by him no matter the stares or whispers they got.
“I’m glad you’re here,” he signed before closing the front door, “but you do know everyone is coming up this weekend.”
“That doesn’t bother me, I like your cousins, and I get along great with Victoria and Lilly. It should be a great weekend of playing games, grilling, watching movies, and just overall relaxing. Besides, nothing stops us from slipping away from everyone and taking a nice romantic walk to our special spot.”
Specter blushed deeply, remembering their last walk out to the spot. He managed a nod in agreement. He walked with Katie back to his room where she deposited her suitcase.
“Oh it looks like you finally got that bedroom set delivered.” Katie ran a hand over the top of a dresser. “No more miss-matched furniture.”
Specter nodded “It came on Wednesday. I have the old junk in the shed. Jamie wants to take it to the flea market. I think we should just toss it in the fire pit.”
“You know how Jamie is. If he can make a few extra dollars on the side, he will. Then again, the fact he built this house and he’s only twenty-three says something about that.”
Before Specter could reply they heard a car horn beep twice. Rushing back to the front door they saw Victoria’s car pulling up next to Katie’s in the driveway.
Moments later the car doors opened. Ollow and Lilly got out from the back seat.
“Hey Specter! You didn’t say Katie was going to be here.” Ollow shook his cousin’s hand and pulled him into a bro hug.
“It’s a surprise to all of us.” He signed back after the hug.
Victoria blinked in surprise but pushed through it. “Katie! I thought you were busy this weekend.” she said as she gave the tall woman a hug.
“Uff! Have you been working out?” She said in response to her friend's hug. “There was a change of plans, so I decided to surprise Specter and you guys by showing up. I hope that isn’t a problem.”
“Of course not, besides, I brought plenty of pizza.” Victoria motioned to the passenger seat that was piled high with pizza boxes. “I better get them in the oven to stay warm or else Jamie will have to eat cold pizza.”
“That never stopped him before.” Ollow smirked and then laughed.
The pizzas along with their bags were brought out from the car and into the home. After getting everything put away and the extra pizzas in the oven to stay warm, a few cold drinks were passed around and the crew started to eat.
“So,” Katie said after taking a bite out of a slice of pepperoni pizza, “Where is Jamie? How come he didn’t come up with you?”
“We had already planned on separate cars so he could leave right from work.” Victoria helped herself to a slice of meat lover's pizza. “Theoretically, he should have been up here before us, but he got pulled into some last minute shenanigans at the office.” She shook her head before taking a rather large bite.
Ollow raised an eyebrow. He was used to his brother’s girlfriend taking more lady-like bites. Not to mention, she had always been a plain cheese pizza kind of girl in the past. Specter rolled his eyes at Victoria’s story as he ate his slice with green peppers and onions on it. The same thing had happened to him more than once in his short career, another reason he enjoyed working remotely.
The expression was noticed by Ollow, distracting him from Victoria. “That sums it up nicely.”
There was a round of laughs as more pizza disappeared from the open boxes. As they chatted and ate, Specter started to notice something. Ollow and Lilly started to look uncomfortable on the couch they were sharing. They seemed to be scooting back and forth, trying to be discreet. When Katie got up for another soda, he noticed her scratching at the base of her spine as she bent over to retrieve a can from the fridge. He wasn’t sure if it was just sympathy or his own body, but he started to feel the tingles of an itch at the same spot. He looked over to Victoria. She was sitting calmly, a slice of meat lover’s pizza in her hand as she smiled. The smile wasn’t malicious, but rather like she knew something the rest of them didn’t.
***
The headlights on Jamie’s truck illuminated the empty mountain road. Out here streetlights were a rare site. In fact, he had decorated his mailbox with an overabundance of reflectors so he could plainly see where to turn off the road to the driveway. Jamie was wary about deer, and kept his eyes peeled to the treeline for anything. Out in this neck of the woods, deer were the major cause of car accidents, rather than other drivers. Frankly, Jamie liked his chances out here better than in the city.
He had worked hard, even before he finished high school. Jamie put a lot of things on hold to accomplish his dreams. Now things were finally paying off. The house was built, mostly furnished, and just about ready for him to move in and make it his home. Not that he was about to kick out Specter, he was glad he could give his cousin someplace safe and secluded to live, and the design of the house should allow them both to live together without getting on each other's nerves.
“I should be there already.” Jamie muttered to himself as he went around a bend in the road. “Randy just had to bring up that issue after three-thirty on a Friday. If you told me in the morning, I could have had it done and we both could have left on time.”
Jamie wasn’t one to normally talk to himself, but it was both a long drive from the city to the mountain house, and he wanted to work out his frustrations before he saw Victoria. After all, he had big plans for the weekend. When the road straightened back out, Jamie reached down and felt the small box in his pocket. He couldn’t help but smile.
Victoria and Jamie were high school sweethearts. At first people thought they were a cute couple but didn’t think it would last, especially with all the time Jamie put into his after school jobs. But, they did. Over the years Victoria had been not only his girlfriend, but his inspiration to work hard, to ensure a stable future for them both.
Jamie knew if he had tried to take her for a weekend getaway with just the two of them she would immediately be suspicious of some kind of surprise, he found that out years ago. So instead, a weekend up at the mountain house with his brother and cousin would catch her completely by surprise. As an added bonus, Victoria could be officially welcomed into the family right then and there.
By the time Jamie turned off the country road onto the long driveway the stars and the crescent moon were out. The night sky was beautiful in the mountains, even with the bright lights on the house and outbuildings lighting up the yard. He saw not only Victoria’s car parked next to Specter’s little 4x4, but Katie’s car as well.
Oh, that’s great! I wouldn’t want specter to feel left out this weekend. He pulled his car right alongside Victoria’s and let the engine idle as he gathered his work bag and coffee mug. I wonder when I should pop the question? Tonight? Or should I wait until tomorrow? I swear this little box is burning a hole in my pocket!
Jamie glanced at his cell, but had no service. It was a coin toss out here if he had service or not, thus the old school landline phone to be safe. The young man slipped his phone into his work bag and killed the engine before letting himself out. Knowing that Specter was one to always lock a door, he kept his keys in hand as he walked up to the door. He heard sounds coming from inside and figured they must be watching a movie or something as he unlocked the front door and let himself in.
“Hey I’m…”
Jamie trailed off as he froze in his steps. His mind reeled to understand just what exactly he was seeing. Ollow and Lilly were on the ground in front of the fireplace making out passionately, somewhat undressed. No, it was more accurate to say they were busting through and ripping off their clothes as their bodies swelled with muscle growth and what looked like fur started to grow in patches, dark almost black on Ollow and a rich brown color on Lilly. On the couch, Specter and Katie were in a similar state. He watched as Specter’s claws, they were far past nails at this point, tore open the back of Katie’s tightly stretched blouse, revealing a heavily muscled back nearly covered in red fur, just a shade darker than her long red hair on her head.
His family and friends were lost in their passion and didn’t even turn towards Jamie, However he was noticed by someone else. Sitting on a couch there was what Jamie could only call a werewolf. She, there was no mistaking her gender, locked eyes with the young man before slowly getting up onto her paws. She was covered in a rusty-brown fur from her paws to the tips of her triangular ears. But it was the long locks of red hair that told Jamie exactly who she was.
“Vic-Victoria?’ it came out in a harsh whisper.
“We’ve been waiting for you, Jamie.” Her voice had changed slightly, sounding a bit huskier, but it was still her. “I wish your stupid boss hadn’t made you late, but don’t worry, there is still plenty of pizza left.”
When she took a step towards her boyfriend, it seemed to snap Jamie out of his frozen terror. He quickly turned and ran out the still open front door. Victoria sighed, but it was quickly replaced by a grin as she ran after him. Wolves love to chase.
Jamie first ran to his car, but he fumbled with his keys, dropping them to the ground. He heard a chorus of howls from inside the house. He snapped his head towards the sound and saw Victoria running after him. Abandoning his car, Jamie took off running. He didn’t think and ran right past the utility shed and into the forest that surrounded the property. Victoria’s eyes were much more sensitive to low light, along with her keen hearing and scent she had no issue chasing after her boyfriend into the woods.
Running into a forest at night without even any moonlight as a human, however, was a mistake that Jamie soon paid for by smashing into a tree. Stunned by the impact, and with blood flowing from his nose he tried to continue on before tripping over a root and falling flat on his face. Jamie tried to get up but was quickly tackled by Victoria. They rolled around a bit and he ended up pinned to the ground by the female wolf. She quickly kissed Jamie, but pulled away when she noticed the blood.
“Oh god! Look at your nose!” She let out a canine whimper as she saw the flow of blood, “Jamie what the hell were you thinking running into the forest at night without even a flashlight?”
“Maybe it was being chased by a werewolf?” He offered, still scared and confused by everything that was happening.
Victoria’s ears folded back. “It’s just wolf, that word is offensive.”
“What did you do to Ollow and Specter, and the girls?”
“I tainted them, with essence sprinkled on the pizza. I made them wolves just like I am now.”
He didn’t understand half of the words Victoria was using, but it didn’t matter. “Wh-why would you do that?”
“Why would I share the most wonderful gift with my friends? With my boyfriend?” She leaned in closer. Even if she was just a dark shadow to Jamie right now, he could feel her warm body shift slightly on top of his own. “Do you trust me, Jamie?”
“I…”
“Because trust me, this feels so amazing and so right. Didn’t you hear their howls of joy before you ran into the woods like an idiot?”
“I heard howling, but I don’t know what it meant.”
“Trust me, it was good. I’m still me, Jamie, under all this fur. Everything we’ve shared from movies, to date nights, to the quiet moments where it’s just the two of us, none of that is erased by this. I love you, more than anything. I want you as my mate, my partner through everything that comes next.” Her cold nose and warm muzzle nuzzled against his cheek.
I can’t run away, she’ll just catch me again. But do I want to run away from Victoria? What about everything we’ve been through? I was going to ask her to… Jamie felt his battered body relax as the wolf cuddled against him. “Are…are you going to bite me?”
“There are better and more enjoyable ways to transfer essence.” She said softly.
‘What does-”
Jamie was cut off as Victoria’s muzzle pressed against his lips. The fur was so soft and warm on her muzzle. Soon her very long tongue was slipping into his mouth and dancing with his. Victoria released his arms, and Jamie wrapped them around her. As strange as it was kissing a wolf, it was still Victoria, his girlfriend, his partner, his love.
Laying on the bed of leaves, time passed by the lovers. Jamie felt his trepidation and worries melting away the longer he kissed and held Victoria. The situation may have been unbelievable, but what mattered hadn’t changed. The crescent moon continued to move across the sky as the passion only increased between the pair. But the romantic moment was interrupted by a sudden itch on Jamie’s back side. He broke the kiss and squirmed, trying to find some relief.
“The itch means it’s coming.” she rolled them onto their sides and she scratched Jamie lightly with her claws through his jeans. “You might want to strip down now.”
“What? You want me to get naked in the woods?”
Victoria shrugged. “I already am.”
“That’s not…” Jamie gripped onto her tightly and he started to breath heavily as he felt his muscles tensing in waves.
“I warned you.” Victoria sighed, “At least kick off your shoes before it really starts.”
Jamie took her advice and managed to kick off his shoes. But he was soon distracted by a deep desire to get physical with Victoria. Jamie gripped her tightly, rolling the wolf onto her back. She was surprised, but not disappointed as he started to kiss her with a mad passion. Victoria held onto her mate tightly as the changes truly began.
His back flexed, the muscles growing taunt as they swelled with growth. Jamie wasn’t a weak man to begin with, but the increase in mass was still impressive by any scale. He growled as he felt his clothes becoming restrictive as he kissed his way down Victoria’s back. Her claws dug into her partner when he gave her a love bite with now much sharper teeth.
Jamie wasn’t thinking, just feeling his way through things as the seams of his jeans started to tear. They were aired along by Victoria who by now very much wanted what was inside those pants. The shredded jeans and underwear were tossed aside. By now patches of black fur were expanding across his muscular form, but Jamie was only concerned with one thing. He spread Victoria’s legs and slipped into her willing and ready body.
She let out a very pleased growl as her claws dug into his hips, not that Jamie needed any encouragement. He thrust deep and hard into his mate as the changes to his body accelerated. His paws and claws tore through his socks as his ears grew longer and mobile. Then the pressure began to build in the front of his face. He closed his eyes tightly as a muzzle forced its way out. The damage to his nose was healed in a manner as it shifted to being canine in shape. His head and new muzzle was quickly engulfed in dark black fur.
A long tail grew out from the base of Jamie’s spine. At first it was bare, but as the black fur grew it quickly became a proper wolf’s tail. All that remained was the pressure building up inside of Jamie, mirrored in Victoria as she held on almost painfully tight. Suddenly Jamie threw his head back and let out an echoing howl into the woods. His song was quickly joined by Victoria’s howl.
Exhausted from the change and the sex, Jamie fell forward onto Victoria. The red wolf gently stroked his fur as the memories settled into his mind.
“Shh, just relax and let them take hold.” She whispered into his large triangular ear.
Slowly the memories settled into place and Jamie’s breathing and heart rate returned to normal. He pushed himself up slightly, now able to see Victoria more clearly in the dim light. He smiled down at her, and she returned the smile.
“How’s the nose feeling?” She asked softly.
“Better, and not just the lack of pain.” Jamie leaned down and deeply inhaled her scent. “I thought I knew your scent before, but now…”
“I know, it changes so much, the ears too.” she playfully flicked her ears around. “Even in human form they are both so much better.”
Jamie folded back his ears. “I’m sorry I called you a werewolf earlier.”
“I can forgive you,” Victoria scratched between his ears, “what else is a human going to call one of us the first time they see us in the fur? Besides, Ollow said the same thing before Lilly pulled him down onto the floor.”
Jamie chuckled at that then he remembered something very important. “Hey, where did my jeans go?”
“I tossed them to the side, don’t worry I’m not about to litter back here.”
“No, that’s not it, there’s something in my pocket.” Jamie climbed off of Victoria and searched the forest floor.
“Don’t worry,” Victoria said as she sat up, “We’ll find your wallet.”
“It’s not my wallet I’m worried about…Ah! Here it is!” He found the pocket intact and the small box still snugly inside.
‘What is…” Victoria trailed off as Jamie opened the box.
The small diamond captured the light from the distant house and faintly sparkled.
“Will you marry me?”
Victoria was speechless at first, she thought she was the one with a surprise for the weekend. Her tail, however, clearly showed her joy before she wrapped her arms around Jamie.
“We’re already mates, so the answer is obviously yes!” She squealed as they held each other tightly.
After a few more long kisses, however, they faced the issue with the ring fitting on her finger.
“I’m sorry, I guess I got your size before all this.”
“It probably would fit my finger if I shifted back, but that wouldn’t solve the problem.”
“I guess that’s why wolves don’t wear rings. Hey, where are my shoes? I have an idea.”
Jamie pulled one of the laces out of his sneakers and slipped it through the band of the ring before tying it in a loop. He then hung the makeshift necklace around Victoria’s neck.
“There, that will last until I can get a real chain back home for it.”
“I like the engagement necklace thing better anyway.” She smiled as she leaned in to nuzzle her mate. “And you’ll wear a wedding necklace too, right?”
“Of course I will.”
The pair of wolves gathered up what was left of Jamie’s clothes and headed back towards the house. Along the way Jamie started to understand the enhanced senses he now had. His nose was flooded with dozens of scents. Jamie's ears flicked at the various sounds of the nocturnal creatures in the woods around them. The door had been closed, and when he tried the door, Jamie found it locked.
“Some things never change.” Victoria smiled as she knocked on the door.
The door opened and the pair were quickly surrounded by family and friends. Lilly noticed the ring hanging around Victoria’s neck and yipped with delight.
“Oh my god! Jamie finally proposed!” She said, tail wagging as she squeezed Victoria tightly.
“What do you mean ‘finally’?” Jamie said as he returned Ollow’s hug.
Katie laughed. “We all knew it would happen some day, I guess you both had a surprise planned for the weekend.”
“We talked about starting a pool.” Specter signed. “But I guess there is no point now.”
“I was waiting until everything was set to move out here full time.” He placed a hand on Specter’s blond furred shoulder, “And don’t even think about trying to move out, this house is your home too, it always was.”
“That is all well and good, but you three,” Katie pointed to Jamie, Ollow, and Specter, “are all family, we can’t form a pack.”
“I know, but there is still plenty of land on the plot.” Jamie motioned to the outside.” We can expand the, ah, compound a bit. At least we have someplace nice to stay while building it.”
“Yeah, we won’t have to camp out in a work van this time.” Ollow slapped Jamie on the back.
Victoria shook her head. “We’re getting ahead of ourselves, we can worry about packs and buildings later. Right now, I bet Jamie must be starving. I hope you four didn’t devour all the pizza that was left.”
“We left a slice or two.” Katie giggled. "Come on, let the happy couple inside.”
Once they were all inside, Jamie tore into a pizza like he hadn’t eaten in days. Victoria just smiled as she handed him another box.
“I just thought of something,” Ollow said as she fumbled with his claws and the pop-top on a can of soda.
“Hey, you better watch it, that’s a cola.” Lilly warned.
“Oh right, caffeine isn’t good for me any more.” He went to get a different soda from the fridge. “But anyway, do we have enough food for the weekend now?”
“Once we can shift back, we can always head into town. As long as we can make it through to tomorrow.” Katie responded.”
“Actually,” Victoria said, “I have two coolers full of frozen meat in the trunk, so that should be enough to keep us fed. I should go pull those inside now.”
“We were planning to grill this weekend. But I have a feeling not all that meat will hit the grill.” Jamie smiled.
***
The party continued well into the night before the couples paired off for the evening. Jamie was cuddled up tightly with Victoria in their bed. Everything felt perfect as he nuzzled gently against her neck.
“Mmm, don’t get me started again, I need some sleep.” She said before opening her mouth wide with a yawn.
“It’s not about that, I just …I love you so much.”
“I know you do, I love you just as much.” Victoria snuggled up against his black furred body. “That’s why I had to share this with you. I’m sure you would have done the same thing.”
“I would have without a second thought.” He lifted his body just enough to share a kiss. “There’s something that’s been on my mind for a bit, even before all this.”
“What is it?”
“It’s about starting a family, having kids.”
“Cubs,” she corrected with a smile. “We’ve talked about it before, you know I want to be a mom and raise a family with you.”
“I know, but I was wondering about when to start.”
“Oh?” She rolled over to face him. “Do you have a rough timeline in mind?”
“I guess…as soon as possible?”
Victoria laughed softly. “Ready to rush in now that we’re matted, huh?”
“Maybe,” he pressed his nose up against hers, “I’ve worked hard for our future, and I want to start seeing all the work pay off.”
She gently licked the side of Jamie’s muzzle. “It will, love. I don’t know exactly when my first heat will be, but according to the Memories, it should be sometime between January and April, so you will have to wait until next year.”
“So, more than enough time to go down to the courthouse.”
“We could plan something a little more involved. I know it’s just a piece of paper to us at this point, but I want to celebrate it with our family and friends.”
“Ok, fair point.”
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m exhausted.” She leaned in for one final kiss, before rolling back over and spooning back against her mate.
Jamie held her tightly and whispered gently into her ear, “goodnight, I love you.”
“I love you too.”
