This is for :dreamkeeperwolf on FA, the winner of my thanksgiving raffle. I know he was one of the first people to watch my account way back in the beginning of my time there. It was a pleasure writing this story staring his OCs, Jamie and Victoria.

Jamie has been left a broken man after years of hellish training in an unethical military program. Can Victoria, his childhood friend, manage to reach out to him and pull him back from the brink?

Jamie didn’t think he had any humanity left in him to break. After years of being used as more a living weapon than a soldier any innocence he had when he was kidnapped by the military was long since burned away. After the Dark Wars and the near collapse of civilization, Jamie and his squad survived, but they were still weapons used against powered individuals too dangerous for police and security agencies to deal with on their own.

Jamie wanted to stop. The government that had made them was long gone. Who cared if he just walked away into the wildlands between the small pockets left of civilization and just waited for the end to come? Apparently his squad cared. They couldn’t allow someone with his power running around without any master. The squad had found out about his plan to leave and labeled him weak and a deserter. With approval of the city-state of Conradia they arranged a fake mission and turned on their former squadmate.

The ensuing battle was fierce, after all they were battle hardened and conditioned since childhood to be killing machines with or without their powers. If they had betrayed any other member of the squad it would have ended quickly and decisively. But Jamie’s power was The Reaper's Shroud, A near impenetrable armor that made him appear as the specter of death itself. He had activated the power reflexively when attacked. His training, programmed deep into his brain, took over and he fought to preserve his life. He was barely even aware of what he was doing, it all happened so fast. It didn’t start to hit him until the last of his former squad was dead on the ground in front of him.

Jamie didn’t have time to process any of this as a fail safe was activated. A rip in reality brought forth some kind of eldritch horror from beyond. It first fed on the corpses of his former squadmates before turning his attention to Jamie. The Reaper's Shroud did protect him, but the beast was powerful and was wearing it down, weakening it with every strike it landed. Their fighting took place near an old transmission tower. Jamie had managed to trick the beast into hitting the base supports several times. He then managed to use his last few grenades to drop the tower on the head (at least he thought it was the head) of the neverborn monster and end it as well.

The fight was finally over. As the creature melted away into nothingness, Jamie dropped the shroud. He fell to his knees in the wreckage of the tower. Now that the fight was over everything that had happened came flooding back into his mind. His squad had turned on him, and in turn he had killed every last one of them.

“Why?” Jamie croaked out as he fell into shock and despair.

Jessica drove over the borderlands of Conradia in the truck she ‘requisitioned’. Her mission was a fairly standard one, gather any information she could and if she came across a high ranking member of the government give them an early retirement with her sniper rifle. She had been trained as a sniper during the war before she had become an anthro. Surprisingly even with the orange fur and deep red scales she sported as a dragonfox hybrid, she was still the best stealth specialist at her base.

After eliminating her target, Jessica had found some more than disturbing information. The plans for the elimination of Jamie Halfsong, her long lost cousin. She had been butting heads with the base commander, a horse anthro named Darien Bass about getting her cousin to safety, but the risks were always too high. But now even the rest of his squad wanted him dead, she had to do what she could to get him out.

I just hope I’m not too late! She thought as her golden eyes scanned the terrain.

Jessica had a general location, but the pillar of smoke rising in the air was one hell of a landmark. She floored the accelerator and rushed towards the destruction. When Jessica got there it was almost too quiet. Not so much as a bug buzzing in the air. The smell of smoke and burning filled her sensitive nose. Jessica slowed her pace as she hit the edge of the combat zone and readied her rifle.

Jessica quickly set up in a hidden spot and scanned the site with her scope, looking for anyone or anything as she cycled through image modes. On the thermal scan she spotted something in the center of the devastation. It was warm and resembled a person hunched over. Not having any other options, Jessica carefully made her way towards the center. Peeking around a huge hunk of rubble she saw him. The last time Jessica had seen her cousin in person they had been little kids. She had seen a more current picture of him during her briefing, but it didn’t prepare her for this.

Jamie was sitting on the ground, his arms wrapped around his knees. He was dressed in a battle dress uniform that had seen better days, it was torn, dirty, and even burnt in places. His hair was a mess, but the most disturbing thing was his face. Jamie stared ahead, his eyes empty, face expressionless. if it wasn’t for a subtle rocking motion Jessica would have guessed he was dead.

“J-Jamie?” She called out cautiously.

His eyes shifted towards her, but the rest of his body stayed motionless.

“I know I look a lot different than when we last met, but I’m your cousin, Jessica.”

Jamie didn’t respond, he just shifted his eyes back to staring ahead into nothing.

“I’m an anthro now, not that I need to tell you that. I found out they were planning to eliminate you and I came to… Just what the hell happened here?”

The question hung in the air for a moment before Jamie answered. “I happened. I just wanted to be left alone. They called me a failure and…I did all this.”

“I don’t want to hurt you, I want to help you, we all do.”

Jamie remained silent, starting ahead once more.

“Jamie, there’s no way Conradia doesn't know something happened here. We can't stay here.”

Jamie said nothing, he just sat on the ground unmoving. Jessica looked around, half expecting to see hoverships flying in. Carefully she approached but Jamie showed no reaction. She reached down and touched his shoulder. His body stopped rocking and now he sat perfectly still.

“Come on, follow me.” She didn't yell, but intoned it like an order.

Perhaps it was just his training taking over, but whatever it was Jamie got to his feet. When Jessica started to move he followed silently behind her.

***

Jessica tried to engage with Jamie several times on the trip back to the base but she might as well had a mannequin sitting next to her. This had not been the family reunion she was hoping for. The base leader was waiting for them as she pulled up in the motor pool. The large stallion watched them with his large brown eyes as she got out of the vehicle.

“Your message said you had a package, but this isn’t what I was expecting.” Darien said as he looked at the infamous soldier.

“That's because the opportunity presented itself. All that's left of his squad is Jamie.”

“Dear god.” Darien folded back his ears as he heard the news. “That squad was one of the largest force multipliers out there. Is Jamie really the last one left?”

“As far as I could tell. I didn't waste any more time than I had too.”

“If we're lucky they will write him off as being gone with the rest of them.” He looked easily over Jessica’s head at the man sitting and staring straight ahead. “How is he?”

“Broken. I've never seen anything like this, and I’ve seen some shit. I know they did so much to him but I was hoping something was left of my cousin, but now…I don't know.”

Darien sighed heavily, but collected himself. “Let's get him checked out by medical. I want you to stay with him. Even if there is no connection left, he at least knows you and allowed you to bring him in.”

“I understand.”

***

Physically Jamie checked out, other than being a little underweight. However even with Jessica’s encouragement they couldn’t get Jamie to eat anything. Seeing him like this was tearing Jessica apart. Jamie just sat on the floor of his room, seemingly in a trance. After another half day of frustration She left to take her lunch break.

Jessica sat in the mess hall, staring at her lunch. Her cousin’s lack of appetite was contagious it seemed. Victoria could tell something was wrong across the room. She had grown up with Jessica and Jamie, or at least until he was stolen away. The fact that the little boy she would play house with was transformed into almost a force of nature never sat well with the wolf. Victoria sat down beside the dragonfox.

“Hey.” Victoria broke the ice.

“Hey.”

Victoria let the silence hang for a moment. “Things are bad, aren’t they?”

Jessica moved her food around with her fork. “What have you heard?”

“Nothing actually, I'm just going off the look on your face.”

“Jamie he’s…broken. He won’t eat or speak. I don’t know if he’s even sleeping.”

“He won’t respond to anyone?”

“He responded to a few direct commands, like some kind of robot. But I don’t know if there is a person left in there. I don’t know if the betrayal was the final straw or not, but either way I think he’s broken beyond repair.”

Victoria shook her head. “I can’t accept that. After everything he’s been through, there has got to be something we can do.”

Jessica sighed “What can we do if he won’t even talk?”

“Let me see him, let me try. Please? We owe him this.”

Jessica sighed and rested her head on her folded hands. “The higher-ups in the guild aren’t happy about the situation. Darien is catching crap about it and Jamie has not even been here a full twenty-four hours yet. Honestly, you have nothing to lose by trying, just don’t set yourself up for heartache.”

“My heart would ache more if I didn’t try.”

***

Victoria walked down the hall to the room Jamie was in. The door was locked but she wondered if that even mattered after what he did to an entire fortified building. Victoria typed her access code into the keypad and opened the door. She saw Jamie sitting on the floor facing away from the door. He didn’t so much as flinch as she entered the room. Slowly she walked to stand in front of him.

“Hello Jamie. I would be surprised if you recognized me. Last time we saw each other I wasn’t a wolf.” Victoria lowered herself onto the floor right in front of him. “We were friends in the before times. I know we were both just five year old little kids, but do you remember me, Victoria?”

The man’s eyes just stared blankly ahead as he slowly rocked.

“I know Jessica must have said we’re with the Guild. We wanted to save you and help you. I know you’ve been through hell. Not that the Dark Wars were easy on any of us.”

There was no sign of recognition of his cousin’s name either. If it wasn’t for his rocking and shallow breathing Victoria would have thought she was talking to a corpse.

“You know, you should probably eat something, or at least drink some water. Even just a little will help you to feel better, I’m sure.”

Victoria thought she was ready, prepared for the worst, but seeing the husk of a man she had once ran around and played with was breaking her heart. She took a shaky breath, trying to hold back her tears. She tried to think of something from their childhood, anything she could do or say. Her tail laid on the floor and her ears drooped low and folded back. Something came to her, a silly little song Jamie and her would sing to each other when they played. In a soft sad voice she slowly sang the song.

Tea for two,

And cookies for three,

One for you,

And two for me!

Jamie stopped rocking and his eyes focused on the wolf. There was finally something behind those eyes. Victoria blinked away her tears, grasping onto the tiny flicker of hope.

“Do you remember that song? We made it up together. It was so long ago. Hell, it feels like that was a hundred years ago sometimes.” She sang the song again, stronger this time.

Jamie’s lips parted. He then moved them slightly, working the muscles as if remembering how to talk. He slowly repeated the sing-song rhyme back to her.

Tea for two,

And cookies for three,

One for you,

And two for me!

“Victoria?” His voice was dry and raspy.

Her ears canted forward. “Yes! Do you remember me?”

“I, ah, I remember a tiny house,” Jamie knitted his eyebrows, “I think?”

“A tiny…the playhouse! Yes! I had a playhouse my dad built in the backyard. We used to play in it all the time!”

“That was real?” Jamie shifted, lowering his legs and sitting up straighter. “And the cookies?”

Victoria laughed. “We ate a lot of cookies there.” Her tail swayed behind her.

“I thought it was just a dream.” He whispered, “It all runs together” Jamie closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead slowly,”memories, dreams, training. It’s hard to tell what was real, imagined, or programmed in.”

“It was real,” she reached out and touched his hand, “as real as this.”

Jamie looked down at the fury hand resting on his. He could feel the warmth and a slight tickle from the fur. Nervously he held her hand, needing to know she was real. Jamie took a good look at the wolf sitting in front of him. He knew of the anthros but had never really thought about them. Jamie knew some city-states wanted them eliminated, but at this point Jamie wasn’t beholden to any of them anymore.

Victoria’s fur, or at least what wasn’t hidden by her clothes seemed to be tan and brownish gray. Contrasting this was her long red hair that cascaded down in waves over her shoulders. A wolf muzzle smiled at him and her triangular ears were focused on him as much as her slightly teary eyes were.

“I recognize your hair, but I think it was shorter.”

“I grew it out a few years after…” she immediately looked down, “after you were taken.”

Jamie looked down. Her hand was still in his. Not sure what else to do, Jamie squeezed Victoria’s hand.

“I’m sorry.” Victoria said softly, returning the squeeze.

“You don’t have to apologize, none of this was your fault.”

Victoria managed a slight nod. She then leaned forward slightly.

“You should probably eat something. You’ve been here for almost two days now.”

“Have I?” Jamie scratched under his chin. “I guess I’m overdue for a ration bar then.”

“Ration bar?” Victoria scrunched her face in disgust. “Those things are horrible!”

“What else would I eat? I don’t know the last time I even had a pro-shake.”

“Those are not any better. Look, we have an actual mess hall here with real food, not leftover rations from the last war.”

“Real food?” Jamie blinked, seemingly confused.

“Just stay here,” she slowly got up to her feet. “I’ll get something actually edible.”

Jamie watched as Victoria made her way to a com-panel on the wall. He found himself transfixed by her two-toned tail. Jamie then had a realization.

“Can…can I have a cookie with my meal?”

“Y-yes, of course you can.” Tears started to form in her eyes again, but she did her best to hide them.

***

Jessica and Darien were watching the feed from Jamie’s room. She turned slightly towards the horse.

“I honestly can’t believe that worked. A silly little song got through to him after all I tried.”

“Memories are funny things, and you heard what Jamie said. His early years are all muddled and blended together. To put an adult through that kind of conditioning would be unconscionable, but to put children, barely more than toddlers, through that kind of hell…”

“Yeah, the world is better off with them gone, that’s for sure. Do you think this is enough to get us a reprieve from the Guild?”

“I’d say so, at least for a time. Do you want to try talking to him again now that the ice has been broken?”

“No, not yet. Victoria has him talking and willing to eat a meal. Let’s just let her continue for a while unless he asks to see me. No point in ruining a good thing.”

***

When the plate of roast beef, mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables was placed In front of him, Jamie stared at it for a moment. The delicious smell made his mouth water. He looked at the tray and it took him a moment to remember how to use a fork. He held the implement unsure in his fingers before stabbing a piece of beef. Jamie chewed slowly with a look of dawning revelation on his face. He then proceeded to devour the food in less than three minutes.

“I knew you had to be hungry, but did you even taste it?”

Jamie finished washing down his meal with a glass of water. “I think that is the first time I really tasted a meal in a long time.” He pushed his empty tray away and looked Victoria directly in the eyes. “My mind is feeling a lot clearer, and there's some things I need to know.”

Victoria pulled a chair up to the small table and sat down across from him. “Go ahead, ask.”

“Where are we?”

“A mostly underground base set in the Skysplitter Mountains. We found it abandoned and forgotten from the war and refurbished it for our needs.”

“I thought it felt familiar.”

Victoria blinked and her ears focused on him. “You were here before?”

“No, I don’t think so, but bases built back then have a familiar layout and construction.” Jamie shifted in his seat before continuing. “Who are you working for exactly?”

“Jessica and I belong to The Guild. As anthros started to spread we banded together. At first for protection, but as we grew in number we started to expand our focus.”

Jamie thought about that for a moment before asking his next question. “To what, exactly?”

“I don’t have to tell you how much humanity ruined the world. How many billions of lives were lost in war? And what do we have to show for it? A few dozen over bloated city-states just waiting to start the next war and finish the job.”

Jamie rested his chin on his closed hand. “And you think anthros can do better?”

“I know this is hard to understand as a human-”

He shook his head. “Calling me a human at this point is a stretch.”

“Jamie, please listen. There is something so liberating about letting go of what we used to be. To evolve into something more.”

“And you want to share this evolution?”

“Of course I do! It’s not about wanting to evolve, we need to evolve. How else can we rebuild civilization into something better instead of just repeating the same cycle again and again until there is nothing left but a barren rock of a world.”

Jamie stared at his empty tray before looking up to meet her eyes. “One last question. Why am I here?”

“You and your unit are well known just about everywhere.”

“Is that fame or infamy?”

“In your case, I’d say it’s both. They tell stories around campfires about you, the things you've done, your powers. A lot write it off as just exaggeration, but given the story Jessica told, I don’t think they are at all.”

Jamie looked down at the table. “I still don’t know what I did. It was like I was on autopilot, barely even aware as my body acted as it was trained and programmed to do. Next thing I know I’m standing in a field of rubble wondering what I had done to my squad.” He shook his head. “Is it worse or better I can’t remember what I did?”

Victoria bit her lip. She could see the pain he was feeling through his body language.

“Jamie I…”

“So, what place is there for me in this new evolved society? You’d be better off just digging a hole and throwing me in it.”

“No.”

“What?”

“Jamie, I don’t care that The Guild either wants you as an asset or eliminated from the playing field. That’s not why I’m in this room with you. I just want a chance to save whatever fragment of a soul is left in your body.”

“What makes you think there is anything left in the first place?”

“I wasn’t sure there was at first. I was starting to think Jessica was right and you were fully broken beyond repair. But then you sang back to me.” Victoria reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out something wrapped in a napkin. She unwrapped it and there was a large chocolate chip cookie. “There is something still there inside you if you can hold onto a good childhood memory after however many hells you were dragged through.” She placed the cookie in front of him.

Jamie reached down and slowly lifted the cookie up. As he stated at it he felt something welling up inside of him. Something he thought had been burned away many years ago. His vision went cloudy, and it took Jamie a moment to realize he was crying.

“Jamie!” Victoria moved without thinking.

She jumped from her chair and wrapped her arms around the broken soldier. Jamie let go, sobbing into her chest as she held him tight. In that moment he had never felt weaker, he would have collapsed to the floor in a heap if it wasn’t for the warm soft body holding him firmly. The tears flowed until there was nothing left. Jamie was left breathing raggedly while still in Victoria's warm embrace.

He lifted his eyes, bloodshot and red, up to meet hers. “Victoria I-”

“Shh, you don’t have to say anything. After a good meal and a good cry, I think you need some sleep. We can talk again after you’re rested.”

“I am…tired.” It was like a switch was flipped, and his body suddenly realized he hadn’t slept in the past two days.

“Here, let me help you to bed.”

Jamie managed a weak nod and leaned heavily on Victoria as they walked to the cot. He sighed deeply as his body sank down onto the cot.

“Victoria I…thank you…” Jamie said, squeezing her hand as his eyelids grew heavy as lead.

“Shh, just get some sleep, we’ll talk more later, ok?”

“Yeah, he yawned as he relaxed fully onto the cot. “tomorrow…”

***

It was a slow process over the next few weeks, after all it was a lifetime of trauma to work through. However, the progress was noticeable to everyone. Jamie really started to open up thanks to Victoria. Although he was willing to speak with Jessica, he spent most of his time with Victoria. Even when Jamie was finally able to leave his room, they would walk together through the base. It was strange how it was a wolf who made him feel almost human again. For her part, Victoria found herself growing closer to the human with each passing day. As Jamie shared his life and what he had been through it only made her want to be there more. To help this broken man put themselves back together.

On one of their walks through the base they found themselves on the observation platform. Large thick windows kept out the chilly mountain air, while the moon and stars streamed their light in. They were laying on the plascrete floor on a heavy blanket looking up at the night sky. Without even realizing it, they had slipped their hands together and held tightly as the sky slowly turned overhead. Jamie turned his head from the windows and looked over to Victoria. As he took in her long profile he felt something deep inside him. Noticing her friend was staring at her, Victoria turned her head slightly towards him.

“Is there something wrong?” She asked softly.

Jamie shook his head. “No, everything is good. For the first time since the fire, things are good. And it’s because of you.”

Victoria felt herself flush under her fur, and started to look away. But then Jamie’s hand touched her muzzle and brought her eyes back to his. They locked eyes in the moonlight. The pull between them was like a pair of magnets.

“Victoria…I love you.” he whispered softly.

Victoria couldn’t help herself, she nuzzled against his warm hand before pressing her muzzle up against his lips. Unsure at first, Jamie pressed in tighter. She gasped before surrendering to the kiss. Eyes closed, they enjoyed the kiss under the moonlight. Jamie wrapped his arms around the wolf and pulled her in closer. Victoria let out a needy whine, but then she placed her hands on Jamie’s chest and pushed away slightly.

“J-Jamie…”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to over step.” He started to pull away

Victoria stopped him. “No, no you didn't, that's not why I’m stopping you.”

Jamie blinked more confused than ever.

“If we…continue this, you’ll change.”

“What?”

“One of the ways a human can become an anthro is through, ah, sexual transmission.”

His cheeks reddened slightly as he got the gist of things. “Isn’t that what you want?”

“I want you to make a choice, to join us willingly. I don’t want to trick you and-” Victoria was cut off as he pressed his lips back against her muzzle and kissed her deeply.

Victoria closed her eyes and gave in. She pulled him in tight and deepened the kiss. They both let out soft moans as their tongues slid against one another. The pull that they felt before was magnified a hundred fold. The heat was rising in the otherwise cool air of the observation platform. Hands tugged, pulled, and fumbled with zippers on their uniforms.

Jamie felt her soft fur rubbing against his scarred skin as they held each other tightly. All he could hear was his heart beating in his ears and the soft whimpers and moans coming from Victoria. He broke the kiss, only to leave a trail of kisses down her neck. Victoria pulled his head in tightly against her neck as she squirmed her way out of her panties. Jamie continued to kiss his way down her collar bone and to the top of her breasts. He paused as if suddenly unsure, but a gentle push from Victoria encouraged him.

Jamie teased her nipple with his tongue before taking it into his mouth and sucking, earning a soft yip from Victoria. Her hands slid up and down his back, teasing him with the tips of her almost claw-like nails. Jamie moved to her other nipple, showing it the same attention while lightly squeezing the other one with his fingers. As enjoyable as this was, the wolf was starting to feel a greater need between her legs. Placing both her hands on Jamie’s head, she directed him down her body.

Jamie left a trail of kisses down her abdomen and past her navel as he slid between her brown furred legs. Victoria let out a half moan, half wine as she felt his lips reach her sex. It started with a series of kisses against her labia and clit, but soon his tongue was sliding against her already moist slit. She bucked up and let out another yip as she felt the jolt of pleasure shoot up her spine. Jamie spread her legs wider and delved deeply, greedily at her slit. Victoria’s eyes were closed shut as she started to growl. The pressure was building rapidly and was just waiting for a moment to break through the dam.

Victoria’s back arched off the blanket and she let out a howl as she squeezed Jamie’s head between her thighs. The human was stuck between those powerful thighs until the wolf flopped back down onto the blanket. Both were left panting from the experience. Victoria reached for him, whining like a needy cub for his touch. Jamie whipped his mouth on the back of his hand before quickly cuddling against Victoria.

Laying there, under the moon and stars, his body entwined with his friend turned lover, Jamie felt true peace for the first time in recent memory. He was too distracted to even notice the initial changes to his body. His nose started to darken and change texture and a slight point formed on the tips of his ears. Jamie did notice, however, when his entire body started to tingle. It felt like something between a chill and static electricity.

Victoria gripped him tighter, knowing what he was going through first hand. “It’s not that bad, trust me just relax and let it happen.” She gently licked his cheek.

Even with the wolf’s words, Jamie still took deep ragged breaths as his heart pounded in his chest. The tingling intensified along his skin, as new hairs began to grow out from his skin. It thickened into patches of dark gray fur, with a lighter tone on his chest. As he watched the patches grew larger, spreading along his body. Victoria gently ran her hand along his fur covered back, soothing him as she stroked his growing coat.

When Jamie was nearly covered in fur, he felt something shifting at the base of his spine followed by an intense pressure. He reached around to feel the budding tail just starting to grow. The tail twitched, as if it had a mind of its own as it grew longer. Once the new appendage reached its full length, fur quickly began to grow in. Just as Jamie was figuring out how to have some amount of control over his tail, he was distracted by a pressure in the front of his face. His nose, already nearly black started to shift, becoming more canine as a flood of new scents filled his brain.

Jamie had to close his eyes as he tried to sort out the new sensory information. The pressure continued to build as his jaws and nose started to push out from his face. His teeth shifted and grew more canine in appearance. As his muzzle formed on the front of his head, his ears lengthened and migrated up towards the top of his head, flicking back and forth as they poked out of his black hair.

Jamie opened his eyes and gasped. He turned his hands over and back, apparently the gray gave way to red fur on his lower arms to his hands, and the pattern continued with his feet and lower legs. He brought his hands up to his muzzle and gingerly inspected it.

“You make a handsome wolf.” Victoria said as she reached up and scratched behind his ear.

Jamie leaned into the scratch, folding back his ear. She giggled at his reaction before nuzzling up against his muzzle.

“How do you feel?”

“I’m not sure, but I think I feel better.”

“That’s how I felt too.” Victoria kissed him softly.

The kiss was returned and soon they were once again entwined on the blanket, only this time it was fur against fur. Jamie was still getting used to his enhanced senses, but there was something so powerful about Victoria’s scent. It was driving him mad as they kissed. When she rolled onto her back with her legs spread and Jamie on top, the new wolf didn’t need any more encouragement.

They fit together perfectly, as if they were puzzle pieces cut to match. Their bodies knew instinctively how to move. With every thrust Jamie felt more and more as if this was meant to be. Victoria felt so alive. She gripped onto Jamie almost painfully tight. They both needed release desperately, but they seemed to just be teetering at the brink. Then with one final thrust, Jamie threw back his head and let out a howl. It reverberated in his own ears as he let loose. His cry was quickly followed by Victoria, their hows blending into a song of passion and love.

After emptying his lungs, James almost collapsed on top of Victoria. They shifted slightly holding each other as they panted for air. As they gazed up into the night sky, the deeper their connection felt. Victoria nuzzled against Jamie and sighed. “I didn’t expect this when I started. All I wanted to do was help an old friend.”

“Maybe this was how it was always supposed to play out. Like even if I hadn’t been taken or the war never happened we would still find each other.”

“Mmm, maybe. All I can say is this feels so right, I don’t know how this could be wrong. Which is good given the…complications.”

“Complications?” He turned his head to look her in the eye, “Are you in trouble because we…”

“Oh, no, thanks to me you’re an anthro now. If anything I’ll get a promotion. No, I was referring to a different kind of complication.” Victoria shook her head slightly. You wouldn’t know, you just got a real nose.”

“Hey! I mean it is more sensitive but still…”

“What I mean is, you just got hit with all the new scents but you don’t know what they all mean.”

What she said did make some sense to Jamie. “Like what? Could you give me an example?”

“Well, you might not know what the scent of an in-season she-wolf smells like, just that she smells very inviting.”

“I guess, but I…” Jamie suddenly sat up as the pieces fell into place. “Wait, are you?”

“Shhhhh!” Victoria pulled him back down and cuddled against him tightly. “If I didn’t want this, I would have stopped you.”

“But-”

“No buts, just hold me, we can discuss our future family later.”

Jamie stared at Victoria and her smiling muzzle, but the shock and surprise gave way to a soft laugh.

“I guess this is the proof we were meant to be together.”

“Oh?”

“Yes, because I went from having nothing worth living for, to having two very good reasons to stay.”

“Jamie…” She held him tightly.

“I’m not going anywhere.” He nuzzled against her and gently licked her cheek. “Not any more.”
