Survival of the Fittest: Year One - Chapter 14: Healing
After a harsh first day of training, Lavender recovers in the ranch infirmary.
A glob of spittle flew from Sandra's beak as she doubled over, the breath punched from his lungs. Confided to a small room lined with a series of holes, the Blaziken found herself assaulted from all sides: a piston bolted out and struck her in the stomach, then a jet of fluid blasted into the side of her face, and another piston planted itself between her shoulder blades, knocking the girl to the floor. Struggling on her hands and knees, an alternating sequence of attacks pounded into her muscular frame as she crawled toward the wall. Using the various holes, she pulled herself back to her feet despite the pistons' best efforts at shaking her loose.
She braced herself against the wall, legs wobbling, and suffered another ten minutes of continuous strikes that left her feathers drenched and heavy with fluid, and her body bruised and battered. One final blow nailed the back of her head, and the towering avian stumbled, eyelids fluttering as she crashed, unconscious, to the floor.
In the wake of their attack testing, Martin eventually released Sandra from her paralysis and escorted the recruits to the other side of the facility, down the hallway they had passed over initially. Gathering the group in a much smaller control room this time, Martin introduced the still-shaken Pokemorphs to the defense testing portion of the building. A single door connected the control room to a long hallway leading to a nine foot, cubic cell, designed to accommodate a single Pokemorph at any given time. Once inside, the testing would subject each recruit to a series of attacks designed to push their bodies to the limit of their endurance. Infused with the essence of various attack types, pistons would pummel away at the body to test resistance to physical punishment, and hoses would spray powerful streams of liquid designed to stimulate special defense.
Citing her admirable performance in the dojo, or so he claimed, Martin chose Sandra as the first to endure defense testing and directed her into the cell. Surrounded by his other acquisitions, Martin leaned back in his pleather captain's seat, watching a series of video monitors as the training program put the Blaziken through her paces. Several whimpers of concern and empathetic winces pain emerged from the group as harsh blows struck deep into the girl's gut, chest and face, splattering fluid from her sopping wet feathers.
When Sandra's body collapsed, no longer able to withstand further abuse, a mix of frightened gasps and relieved sighs permeated the room while Martin seemed pleased by the Blaziken's suffering. His eyes lingering on the image of Sandra's lifeless body, the human recorded the duration of her endurance, noted her vital statistics over the course of the test, and pressed a red button on his console. A secondary door opened within the cell, and a pair of humans in medical scrubs pushed a gurney into the room. With some effort, they managed to hoist the large femme up and onto the metal device as she stirred, beginning to regain consciousness. And with those first signs of life returning to the Blaziken, the doctors carted her prone form away, the door sealing shut as she vanished from sight.
Over the course of the next two hours, Martin cycled through the entire line-up, sending Pokemorph after Pokemorph to suffer at the mercy of his cruel machine before whisking them away to recuperate. The athletes, Hunter and Rickey, followed Sandra's lead, their bulk and muscles absorbing blow after blow as rage and adrenaline kept them on their feet throughout the punishing treatment. Observing these first few tests, Travis figured out a method to break the system, opting to dodge the cell's attacks rather than subjecting his slender frame to unbearable punishment. Though he took a hit here and there, the Infernape deftly avoided piston and jet alike for several minutes, before they finally overwhelmed him. Noting Travis' success, both Xiu Bai and Hiroki duplicated his method to similar returns, their swift and agile frames ideal for evasion.
Not all of the recruits found success, however. Though her pudgy frame allowed her body to absorb hits like the jocks, Nicole struggled to maintain her own endurance as she found herself completely incapable of avoiding attacks. She held out longer than anyone expected, but she slumped over in a feeble heap nonetheless. Trying to follow Travis' example, Tiffany's trepidation overrode her agility, and a single misstep started a chain reaction that beat the frail Lopunny to unconsciousness less than two minutes later. A similar fate befell Dani, except in her case, her own cockiness led to her downfall; she began showboating after the first few missed piston swipes, which made the impact of that first hit all the more devastating. Her short stature made her head the focus of attention from the testing chamber, and it only took a few blows to the skull before the Weavile toppled like a house of cards.
The lean, elongated body afforded Silas a great deal of surface area without the dexterity needed to protect himself or the bulk to swallow the occasional hit. A devastating blow crunched up into his testicles, doubling the Seviper over as a blast of fluid sprayed into his gaping jaws. Sputtering, Silas tried to regain his breath, but the ceaseless pistons punched away at his bare scales until he passed out from the pain. And without the agility of their more physical counterparts, the slim, feminine frames of Lavender and Vivian made them easy targets for such brutal treatment. With a shield of flexible tails to draw attacks away, the Ninetales lasted longer than the Espeon, but such a victory was ultimately meaningless. The cell made quick work of the girls, mercilessly battering their defenseless bodies, and swelling up their pretty faces in the brief time they remained upright.
Lavender awoke several hours later, her whole body throbbing and sporting a fresh coat of bruises just beneath her short fur. She found herself lying in a hospital bed, a gentle mattress cradling her battered frame and a firm pillow propping up the back of her neck. Groaning, she attempted to sit up, but even this simple motion sent jolts of pain through her tender nerves, forcing her back once again. Through the blurred vision of one swollen eye, she noticed a flash of blue, and she lolled her head to one side to discover a trail of blue liquid dripping downward, into the crook of her elbow. Wincing the whole way, she dragged her free arm across her body and ran her fingertips through the fur until they found a small needle.
“Don't touch that," a familiar voice ordered from Lavender's bedside, reaching over and shooing her hand away, “unless you like looking like shit, in which case be my guest."
Lavender watched the feminine blur lean back into her chair and pluck something from the dark fabric of her top. Moments later, the Espeon found a slight pressure applied to her nose as her glasses returned to their proper position. Her vision still blurry through squinting eyes, she could make out the pale skin and brown hair of Allie Stafford, the human watching over her intently in her recovery.
“You're having a pretty shitty day, you know that?"
“Fffffu-" Lavender groaned, unable to snark at her owner as even the smallest motion of her jaw sent a surge of pain through her whole body.
“Yeah, you're gonna wanna keep your mouth shut for a while; you got fucked up. Here, I'll do your part of this conversation: 'tough tough tough, I look like a purple housecat, angry angry angry.'
“Dad's pissed off at me, thanks to you and your sister. She's fine by the way. A little battered, but fine. Still sleeping. Hard to tell which parts of her are swollen and which parts are supposed to look like that though. Ah ah ah, no talking, remember? I said I'd handle that: 'stop talking about my sister or I'll totally fuck you up with my sissy little claws.'
“Anyway, Dad's mad. He thinks you two were a waste of money. And really, I watched the tapes…you both kinda suck. I mean, I could throw marshmallows at a Geodude and do more damage than your sister, and that mewling headache of yours made you look pathetic. And that was before your ass got knocked out in less than a minute. I mean, for fuck's sake…have you never been punched before? You act like this total hard ass and go down in like, two hits?
“I don't know what we're gonna do" she sighed, “between your sister putting up the worst attack score and you putting up the worst defense time…you two are by far the weakest members of the team. Dad's not gonna cut you two any slack. I've seen it in the past, he's already written you both off. 'But Allie, why do you care? You're just a dirty, evil human.' Well that's just not fair, Lavender. I consider myself quite neutral. 'Grrrrrrrr.' Oh don't try to act tough now.
“We'll work on something, okay?" Allie sighed again, reaching down to stroke the bruised fur around Lavender's navel tattoo, “you just gotta last the week, then dad'n Steven'll be busy with their other shit, and I'll take over more of the training stuff. Me'n Liam. The first week always sucks for the newbies. Dad likes to get really hands on and tries to break you guys as fast as possible, and Steven loves helping out with that. Speaking of my fuckhead brother, did he um…already choose a 'favorite?'
“You?" the human responded to the Espeon's begrudging 'yes' and 'no' head movements, “your sister? Dani's not his type. Too flat. So not her. Same with Zoo…Shoe…the Mienshao, you know who I mean. No way in hell he touches dad's prized chicken. Tiffany, maybe? Oh, yeah…she's right up his alley. Arceus, he's such a fucking asshole. Every fucking year. Of course, she's on dad's shit list too, though not as much as the dickhead who bought her in the first place. Between her and Travis—and a motor mouth like Dani? Yeah, he's getting fired for that shit. Maybe demoted, but he's getting something. Kinda makes me glad I'm his daughter. What's he gonna do, disown me? Yeah no.
“Just try to relax for a bit," she offered, lightly patting Lavender's cheek, “the infirmary's your best chance for peace and quiet. Not even Steven'll come poking around here for a quickie.
“You'll only be a few more hours," she said, pulling up her sleeve to reveal a set of freshly-healed skin that the Espeon had scarred open less than a day prior, “that blue shit we're pumping into you? It's a fuckin' miracle worker. Cuts, bruises, swelling, scars…all of that shit gets fixed right up. Not poison though, so like, don't let snakeboy bite when he's eating you out. 'I'm not a whore blah blah blah angry growling.' Yeah yeah it's a joke. I do that. I joke. Fuckin' Arceus, stop giving me the psychic death stare.
“Anyway," the human announced, rising to her feet, “keep resting. Let the juice do its thing and you'll be up and about soon enough. Your sis and the others are a few rooms over, so once your legs are working, you can go visit them. 'Oh thank you Allison, you're the best human I've ever met.' Awwww, well aren't you just a big sweetheart? I doubt I have a lot of competition though. Still, thank you, Lavender. If you're looking for me later, I'm around. I check in on the 'morphs sometimes, so you'll see me. Let me worry about the training rooms for now and just focus on getting better, alright? Alright. Later."
With that, Allie departed the infirmary, leaving the annoyed Espeon in her wake. It hurt to pout, so Lavender forced herself to lie back, staring expressionless at the ceiling. A dull tingle flowed through her body, and she found herself numbed to the throbbing ache burrowing into her every muscle. The overall pain subsiding, her eye began to pry open, light filtering into her line of sight for just a moment before a morphine-induced weariness claimed her body, rocking her gently to sleep.
“Lavy?" Nicole's muffled voice reached her ears, as a pair of paws jostled at her arm.
“Ughhhhh," Lavender groaned, one eye peeling open to look upon her sister's face before clenching shut once more and reopening in tandem with its partner, “Nikki? You're awake?"
“For a while, yeah. I was worried about you. Allie said you…didn't do so good in training."
“Yeah yeah, I got my ass kicked," the Espeon growled, stretching out her jaw and sliding back in bed to prop herself up on her elbows, “how long have I been out for?"
“I was asleep for a while too. Maybe the same amount of time as me?"
“Well whatever. I'd rather sleep than have to deal with the rest of this shit they're piling on us. Fuck I'm sore."
“Me too, a little. I'm feeling a lot better though."
“I'm glad you're okay," Lavender grunted, scooting back into a sitting position, “I feel like I was in a car crash."
“Yeah…you kinda look like it too. I mean, there's no swelling but well…you're all black and blue."
“You probably are too," Lavender coughed, reaching over and grabbing the IV stand to pry herself from the bed, “this shit's still taking its sweet time, but it's working. I couldn't even speak earlier. Arceusdamn that bitch is annoying."
“Who? Allie? She seemed nice to me."
“Everyone is nice to you. Or they're assholes. So I guess she's not an asshole. Still a bitch though."
“She likes us at least."
“She bought us."
“Someone would have if she didn't."
“And I'd hate them too. Hell, I hate them for bidding in the first place."
“I'm just saying…it could be worse. She could be like the others…"
“Like Marty and Steve? Yeah, maybe she's adopted or some shit. That's how she dodged the asshole gene."
“She's nice."
“She's a human."
“She's a nice human."
“Nikki, you've watched cop shows. You know what this is. Those two sociopaths treat us like shit and then Allie comes in to play the good cop. Makes us feel like we've got a friend so maybe we won't fight back as much."
“Well," Nicole whimpered slightly, “I don't care if she's faking. At least she's not hurting us."
“She electrocuted me."
“You attacked her!"
“So?"
“So she was defending herself!"
“So was I!"
“C'mon Lavy," Nicole whined, lowering her voice to a whisper, “at least she won't…you know…like with Tiffany."
“That's not gonna happen to us. That fucker got his rocks off with Tiffany, and she bit that fucking bullet for the rest of us. He can have her for all I care."
“Lavy! W-We're all in this together! We can't just-"
“Nikki, I barely know that girl. I barely know any of these people. I'm cool with Silas and Dani I guess, but I don't expect them to have my back. All I care about is you and me. Whatever it takes to keep us safe, I'm gonna fuckin' do it."
“Like what!" Nicole snapped, uncharacteristically flustered, “talk…shit…to the humans behind their backs and get punished for it? Hang out with your little clique and scheme together? This isn't like school, Lavy! You're not the boss here! These people will hurt us! What…what if Steven gets bored with Tiffany and picks one of us instead? What if they kill one of us? What then? What will I do without you? You think…y-you think I…I…I…"
“Nikki…" Lavender stammered, the Umbreon throwing herself into her twin and crying into the violet fur of her chest, “I…I just…I'm…sorry. I'm sorry, Nikki…"
“No you're not," Nicole sobbed, weakly punching at Lavender's arm, “you always think you're right about everything. You never listen to me…"
“I just don't trust her, Nikki…it's not…it's not anything to do with you."
“Well I do! And you should trust me!"
“Nikki-"
“No! No, Lavy! Allie wants to help us! She's a good guy! Why can't you see that? You never trust me!"
“That's…that's not true."
“Yes it is! You…you always say Ozzy is just a creep because you're scared of him. But I love him, Lavender! And I miss him! O-Ozzy…h-h-he always made me feel like I'm supposed to be brave! You just act like I'm weak without you. Like I can't do anything right!"
“N-Nikki…please, I-"
“I don't even have Ozzy now! All I have is you, Lavender. You're supposed to be my sister. My twin! We're supposed to work together!"
“We can. We are!"
“The others, Lavender. We need them. And I trust them. You don't even know them. The first chance you got, you hooked up with the same crowd as at school and shut everyone else out. Did you know Xiu Bai plays the violin? She's been playing since she was a Mienfoo and she wanted to perform for the humans in Castelia City. Hiroki was on his school's soccer team. Center fielder. He was too shy to even look at me, but he told me all about himself. Did you know his sister was taken too? They got split up at their auction house. He's not as lucky as we are. But you don't care. You act like they're just pawns. You act like the humans do."
“No!" Lavender barked, the stinging slap of her palm against Nicole's cheek ringing through the room, “I'm not like those fuckers!"
“You…y-y-you…y-you hit me…"
“Yeah. Yeah, I did. You're losing it, Nicole."
“No I'm not!" cried the Umbreon, matching Lavender's slap and shoving herself away from the Espeon's bed, “I'm not like you, Lavender! I know I can't survive on my own; you don't! You just think you're smarter than everyone else and you're not! You can't just play this like back home! F-F-Fuck…f-fuck off!"
Sporting a limp, Nicole hobbled through the open doorway, slamming it behind her with a heavy clap. Lavender swung one leg over the edge of the bed and pulled herself free in an effort to chase after her sister, only to clatter to the floor on unstable limbs. Wincing, she pulled herself to the wall and leaned back against it, paws clutching at her feeble appendages, not quite fully-repaired. She noticed a puddle starting to form at her bedside and found a blood spot where the fall had yanked loose her IV. Flailing at the dangling tube, she caught the end of the needle and fumbled it back into her arm, feeling the flow of medication resume once more.
She massaged at her aching limbs in a vain effort to hasten the recovery process, but the slow injection of fluid took its time repairing her damaged body. Gritting her teeth, she cocked her head towards the door and awaited Nicole's return, hoping her less-than-graceful exodus had caught the Umbreon's ear. But minutes passed and Lavender sat alone, abandoned by her twin, left with nothing to do but heal.
