We've got a story for tors396, a possible origin story for his centaur character Jostein. It was fun to work on as I was given a lot of artistic freedom to tell the story. Jostein and Mathias set off for a hike in the woods, not expecting to find a hidden trail along the way.

It was a beautiful day to be outside. It was late in spring, but the heat of summer had yet to arrive. Jostein and Mathias were taking advantage of the day to go on a hike into the woods. They had been close friends for years and both enjoyed hiking and camping when they could get the chance. The pair were both dressed for a day of hiking. Jostein, the blonde and bespectacled one, was wearing khaki shorts and a white t-shirt emblazoned with a rather distressed camping gear logo across the front. Along with his beard he looked like a stereotypical outdoorsman. Mathias, the dark haired and clean shaven one, was more colorful in his dark green shorts and bright red shirt. Both were equipped for a day on the trail with small backpacks. They readied themselves at the trailhead, Jostein was adjusting his backpack while Mathias was tying the laces on his hiking boots.

“Are you ready for this?” Mathias said as he stood back up.

“Please,” Jostein rolled his blue eyes behind his glasses. “It's just a ten kilometer hike, we can do that in our sleep.” He said, handing his friend his walking stick.

“I didn’t know you were a sleepwalker.” He smirked, his green eyes full of mischief.

Jostein chuckled and the pair started off down the trailhead.

Jostein looked up at the lush trees shading the path, “We won’t have many more days like this, before you know it summer will be here, I’ve heard it’s going to be a hot one this year.”

“Like that has ever stopped us before.” Mathias took a deep breath, taking in the fresh air and scents of the forest. “Still, today is a perfect day for a hike.”

The morning sunlight filtered through the leaves as they walked and chatted. They were completely alone on the trail, one of the advantages of going for a hike in the middle of the week. Jostein would have hated to spend a day like this inside, even though the trip had been planned over a week in advance so they had no idea how beautiful it would be. After over an hour of hiking and chatting, Jostein noticed something just off the side of the path.

“Hey, what’s that?’ he said as he came to a stop and peered off into the woods.

“What’s what?” Mathias scanned the woods, thinking his friend had spotted an animal out in the woods.

“Is that a trail?” Jostein carefully walked over to the edge of the well maintained trail. “It’s a little overgrown, but look.”

Mathias followed and looked off into the woods. His friend was right, it did seem to be a narrow trail through the trees.

“It looks like it…hold on.” Mathias slipped off his pack and pulled out a trail guide and studied it.

They both had smartphones, but reception out here was spotty at best, so they relied on more analog means of navigation while out on the trails. Mathias flipped through several pages and inspected a map.”

“Is it on the map?”

“The Red Trail crosses this one, but that’s at like the six k point, and we haven’t been walking that long.”

“And it would be marked with a blaze, I don’t see any trail markings, not even old faded ones.”

Mathias closed the trail guide and slipped it back into his pack. “It must be an old trail they closed down for some reason. Looks like the forest has been reclaiming it over the years.”

“Looks that way,” Jostein rubbed his beard as he looked down the forgotten path, “still, I wonder why we never noticed it before? We’re on these trails several times a year.”

“Maybe it’s that new prescription.” Mathias tapped the bridge of his nose and smirked.

Jostein touched the side of his glasses. “Yeah, ok, then what’s your excuse?”

They both shared a laugh at the situation. They must have walked by the abandoned trail a dozen times over the years visiting the forest.

“I guess we just missed it the last few times,” Mathias shrugged, “it wouldn't be too hard to do.”

“I suppose so.” Jostein continued to look down the old trail. “Hey, what if we take this trail and see where it leads?”

“Come on, Jostein, they must have closed off the trail for a reason.”

“I know, but doesn’t that just make you curious to know what the reason was?” He smiled widely at his friend.

Mathias crossed his arms and stared back at him.

“Look, it’s overgrown, but the trail is still visible. All we would have to do is turn around and backtrack if it’s too long or something wrecked the trail.”

“And what if the trail fades and we lose it?”

Jostein realized he had a point. He looked back to the trail, considering it for a moment. Then he bent down and picked up a stick from the forest floor.

“We can just mark the path ourselves, to make it clearer.” He pushed the stick upright in the middle of the trail. “See? If we do that every couple of meters we can spot the sticks if the trail does fade, and make our way back.”

“Still…”

“Come on, where’s your sense of adventure?”

Mathias thought about it. The thought of going down an abandoned trail did sound like fun, who knows where it led. He was still worried about getting lost in the woods, but looking down the path it looked easy enough to follow. Then there was the expression of excitement on Jostein’s face, it was too hard to say no to that.

“Alright, let’s do it. But, at the first sign of anything being off, we turn around and come back.”

Jostein nodded. “That sounds reasonable.” He stepped easily over a bit of brush and onto the old trail. “Come on, let’s go.”

Mathias followed after his friend. The old trail was too narrow to walk side by side, so Jostein led while his friend followed. The canopy of leaves blocked more of the sun than the main trail had, keeping them both in a cool shade as they walked. Before long they had lost sight of the other trail, but the path was clearly visible so neither was overly worried. As promised, Jostein marked the trail periodically just in case, though it didn’t look like it would be necessary..

There was an air of excitement, while not truly trail blazing, who knows when the last person walked down this abandoned trail. Mathias felt truly surrounded by nature as they hiked. He could almost swear the air was richer and more alive the deeper they went into the forest. Jostein felt it too as he looked around the deep forest taking the sights and sounds. They had hiked a fair distance down the trail and midday was fast approaching. Both young men were starting to get hungry. Mathias took a sip from his water bottle, though his stomach was still complaining.

“I think we should stop for lunch soon.” Mathias said quietly.

“Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Let’s find a good place to stop and eat.” As he looked around he noticed a brighter spot in the woods up ahead. “Hey, I think there’s a clearing up ahead.”

“Hmmm?” Mathias shifted to look over his friend’s shoulder. “Yeah, looks like it, that should be perfect.”

After a few more meters the trees opened up and they were in a small sunlit clearing. After blinking a little in the bright light after over an hour in the deep forest, they noticed something strange in the middle of the clearing. At first Jostein thought it was a huge rock, but as they got closer he could see it was some kind of structure built out of natural stone.

“What is this?”He asked aloud, moving to investigate.

“I don’t know, some kind of cairn?” Mathias said drawing up beside him.

It wasn't just a pile of rocks, it had been built as some kind of enclosure, inside of which was an old slightly worn statue.

“It almost looks like some kind of shrine.” Jostein continued to move towards it to get a better look. “All the way out here in the middle of nowhere.”

“Is that…a centaur statue?” Mathias blinked, not expecting to see that.

“Yeah, it looks like it.”

They were now directly in front of the shrine. Lichen covered the outside, but the inside was mostly clean, other than a few stray brown leaves. The centaur statue stood out against the dark gray stone of the shrine. At one time it must have been white, but it had dulled slightly over who knows how many years. The centaur was rearing up slightly with its front hooves up in the air. He had a rather noble looking bearded face and an impressively toned human chest. The equine portion of his body had the solid look of a workhorse. It also seemed the sculpture had decided to make him anatomically correct with an impressive set of balls and sheath between his hind legs.

“Aw man, I need to get pictures of this.” Jostein said as he pulled his phone out of his pocket.

Mathias did the same and they spent some time taking pictures of the statue and the shrine, including a few with themselves. Their hunger was temporarily forgotten as they documented the strange find.

“Of course there isn’t a shred of signal out here.” Jostein said as he scrolled through the new pictures on his phone. “Otherwise I’d be updating my Instagram right now.”

“It can wait until we get back to the trailhead.” Mathias shook his head. “I just can’t believe something like this was out here. It couldn’t have been easy getting that statue all the way out here.”

“I know. I wonder if the trail was made to get here, or if someone found the existing trail and used it to set up this shrine out here?”

“I guess either is possible.” Mathias said as he slipped his phone back into his pocket. As he did so, he noticed something on the base of the statue. “Hey, I think something is carved in here, it looks like writing.

“Oh?” Jostein put away his phone and hurried back to Mathias. “Where is it?”

They both moved closer, now standing directly in front of the statue. They reached in and brushed the leaves and loose dirt away from the base of the statue. Jostein narrowed his eyes as he took in the characters carved into the stone.

“Is that Greek?” He asked as he saw the slightly faded letters.

“I think it is. Kind of fitting since centaurs are a Greek myth. Get a picture, maybe we can get it translated when we have a signal again.”

“I wonder what google translate will spit out? ‘I be horsie man?’” Jostein laughed.

Mathias chuckled, being well aware of some interesting translations from the app. He wiped his forehead, starting to feel some heat.

“Is it me, or is it getting warmer?” He asked, looking up at the sun overhead.

“We were hiking all morning,” Jostein said as he slipped his pack off his shoulders, “and we’re in the full sun now. That’s probably it.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.” He followed suit in dropping his pack.

Jostein pulled out his water bottle for a drink. After a long pull, however, he felt a strange feeling in his gut. Mathias was scratching a strange itch on his abdomen when he felt something strange, like a lump. He pulled up his shirt and was shocked at what he saw. Just below Mathias’ navel a pair of growths were pushing out from his body.

Jostein stared wide-eyed through his glasses. “What the hell are those?”

“Fuck if I know, but you’ve got them too!”

Jostein looked down and could see a pair of bulges through his shirt. He dropped his water bottle to the ground and pulled up the bottom of his shirt. A similar pair of lumps was starting to form on his body.

“Shit! We need to get back and call an ambulance or something!” He turned to reach down for his pack when he felt his back spasm. “Oh god! What is…”

Jostein felt a heat radiating out from his core making him sweat profusely. He tried to take a step, but his legs suddenly felt strange. It was like they were swelling up around his thighs. He could see his shorts starting to stretch out around them. His legs weren’t bloating, his muscles were expanding. Jostein’s rear was as well, judging by his seam starting to tear open. Embarrassingly he could also feel a familiar swelling in the front of his shorts as his cock grew rock hard.

Mathias bent over slightly with a low groan. He was in a similar state with his shorts starting to tear around the increased muscle mass. He fumbled with his belt, now feeling incredibly tight. As he got it loose his shorts fell away in tatters to the ground, leaving him fully exposed with a throbbing erection. He wasn’t sure if Jostein being in a similar state made things better or worse.

The bumps on Jostein’s body started to grow out. They became elongated before starting to take on a more defined shape. He could feel bones growing inside of them as they twitched. At the tip it began to grow a hard nub, quickly taking shape into a dark equine hoof. The strange growths now resembled miniature horse legs, kicking about as they continued to grow.

Mathias felt something pushing out from the base of his spine. He wondered what was happening now, when he saw a long whip-like tail flicking out behind his friend. Their tails were quickly covered in long hairs. The color of the tails seemed to match their hair, leaving Jostein with a long flowing blond tail and Mathias with a dark brown shorter tail.

The shape of Jostein’s legs started to shift, his thighs becoming massive and rounded and his legs grew longer, and he shifted his stance to keep his balance. He was more aware, however, of what was happening to his feet. Inside his hiking boots they were rapidly changing. His toes were melding together into a single digit and his feet were forcing him up onto it. It grew wide, too wide for the boots and tore out, leaving him standing on a new pair of hooves. Instinctively, kicked off the remnants of his boots.

Mathias was in a similar situation when he felt a sudden pop in his spine around his lower back. New vertebrae were forming, stretching out his back. It happened several more times and then he felt his back starting to bend forward. His new front legs reached down to the ground and his torso bent upwards, keeping him upright.

Jostein shifted forward, balancing easily on four equine legs. His lower back continued to lengthen. A second rib cage started to form as his lower body filled out. Between his rear legs his cock and balls were growing with the rest of him. He could feel the blood rushing in as it grew longer and thicker. The shaft began to darken, taking on a brown color on the lower part of the shaft. The tip grew wider and flattened out. As he watched a similar transformation was happening to Mathias. His cock was a rich dark black with a small almost heart-shaped patch of pink on the side. A thick medial ring formed about a third of the way from the base. At the flat head a thick bead of precum was forming.

Mathias felt a tingling sensation down his lower body and legs. A coat of rich chestnut fur was growing on his body. It started along his back and was quickly covering his lower body. A dun yellow coat covered Jostein's horse half. As he was taking in his new coat of fur, Mathias felt his shirt growing tighter. It seemed his upper body was filling out to match his lower. Firm strong muscles were forming on his arms, chest and abdomen making the red t-shirt uncomfortably tight. He pulled it off, tearing the neck as he did so.

Jostein stared at his friend as he pulled off his own stretched out shirt over his head. It wasn’t just the fact Mathias was now a centaur, but that he looked amazing. He dropped his shirt by his bag and walked over to him, running his eyes over the chestnut centaur. Mathias noticed the way his friend was looking at him and he felt a nervous shiver run down his spine to his tail. Jostein had ended up a little taller than he now was, maybe five centimeters or so. He seemed slightly bigger overall in fact.

“Are you…ok?’ Jostein said as he placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder.

The touch felt good, warm against Mathias’s bare skin. “I…I don’t know. Nothing hurts or anything. How bad do I look?”

“Bad? You don’t look bad at all. If anything I’d say you make a very handsome centaur.”

“Really?” Mathias blushed slightly.

“Yeah. I never noticed before, but something about you now is just so…sexy.”

Hearing those words made Mathias’s black cock twitch. “Jostein? What are you saying?”

He smiled, letting it out felt so freeing. “I’m saying you’re a sexy stallion.”

Jostein slid his hand from Mathias’ shoulder and up his neck to his cheek. Mathias didn’t flinch or pull away, instead he leaned into Jostein’s hand and reached out to touch the bearded cheek of his friend. Their heads drifted closer together and before either knew what was really happening their lips pressed together. Jostein wrapped his arms tightly around Mathias, as his friend pressed his hands against his chest. They felt all their cares and worries melt away in the embrace. However, they both felt the growing need in between their rear legs.

Slowly Jostein released his iron grip and slowly walked along the chestnut stallion’s flanks. His hand ran slowly down Mathias’ back down to his rump where Jostein gave a little pat.

“Wh-what are you doing?” Mathias said as he turned to look behind him.

“I’m just doing what we both want and need right now.” He looked back with hungry blue eyes at the other stallion.

Mathias gulped air, but said nothing. His tail swished from side to side before he lifted it up and to the side, showing off his puffy black donut to Jostein. The blond stallion reared up, his cock standing out proud as he shimmied into position to mount the other centaur. Mathias covered his mouth and bit his hand as he felt the huge cock of his friend push into him. Jostein made no effort to be quiet, moaning loudly as his cock was hugged by the hot passage. He rested his body on top of Mathias, hugging the other centaur with his front legs.

Mathias let out a long sigh and moaned. It felt so strange but so good, doubly so with the warm body of his friend turned lover resting against his back. He reached up and held Jostein's hands, squeezing them tightly. Jostein started to move his hips, thrusting into his lover. Their moans blended together and echoed through the forest. Mathias leaned back against his lover's chest as his hooves were pushed into the ground from the force of Jostein’s thrusts. His cock was smacking against his belly from his partner’s motions, only adding to the pleasure. Mathias closed his eyes tightly as he held onto Jostein’s hands for dear life.

The moment just felt perfect to the blonde centaur as his lower body just seemed to know what to do. The sun was shining down on them, surrounded by the natural beauty of the forest as they celebrated some feelings that had been repressed between them for far too long. He felt so alive, strong and free in his new body. Jostein could feel the pressure building in his body and with a final powerful thrust he just let go. He cried out louder than ever as he emptied his overfull balls into his friend turned lover.

Mathias’ eyes shot wide open as he felt the flat head of Jostein’s cock flare inside of him and pump him full of hot seed. It seemed to push him over the edge and his own cock fired ropes of hot white cum onto the ground in between his hooves. He felt a little weak in his legs, but at the same time didn’t want Jostein to dismount.

Both centaurs panted, their bodies now slick with sweat. As much as neither wanted to admit it, they couldn’t stay that way forever. Jostein slowly dismounted, his front hooves hit the ground with a thud. Mathias moved to quickly wrap his arms around the other centaur and start to kiss him deeply. Jostein didn’t even care as his glasses were smudged by Mathias’ cheeks as they kissed. After everything, they both needed some time to relax. The wild grasses and weeds of the clearing were soft enough and they laid down with Mathias resting his long body against Jostein. They pulled out their lunches, feeling more than a little hungry after all of that.

“I wish I had packed more than just one sandwich now.” Jostein lamented before taking a bite.

Mathias chuckled. “Even if you had packed three it probably still wouldn’t be enough. I have a few extra protein bars though, we can split them.”

“That’s sweet of you.” He smiled and placed one arm over his shoulder while eating his sandwich with the other. “What do you think we will do next? Do we just walk back out?”

“We’re not about to fit on the bus to get back home, let alone in our apartments. But more than that, what will people say when a pair of centaurs walk out of the woods?”

“What if it’s just temporary? Maybe it…Wait, do you hear something?”

They looked around the clearing, hearing something in the woods. Then suddenly figures stepped out from between the trees and into the clearing. Jostein and Mathias found themselves surrounded by about ten other centaurs. The stallions were all bare chested, and well tanned from their time outside. They carried bows over their shoulders, and a few also had spears. The largest one of them stepped forward with a warm smile on his face.

“Welcome, newcomers.” He greeted them.

He had the lower body of a draft horse, making the pair feel almost small in his presence. Dark gray dappled fur covered his lower body and his hooves were covered in long dark charcoal feathering of fur. His hair was long, flowing past his shoulders. It was a dark rich brown with a few streaks of gray showing his age.

Jostein and Mathias scrambled to get back up on their hooves, drawing a few laughs from the other centaurs.

“Ahh, hi, um who are you?” Jostein managed to blurt out.

“My name is Ernst, I’m more or less the leader here.” He glanced at the other centaurs who nodded in agreement.

“Do you know what happened to us?” Mathias asked.

“Yes, because the same thing happened to me over a decade ago.” he pointed back to the shrine. “Just like you, I touched the statue of Chiron in the shrine. That’s why it is hidden out here in the deep woods. Most people walk by the trails that lead to this clearing without so much as a glance, but every once in a while someone notices it and finds their way here. At that point we pretty much all touch the damned thing.”

Ernst and the rest of the centaurs all laughed at this, fully admitting they were all too curious to leave the statue alone.

“So, you all used to be human then, just like us?” Jostein confirmed.

“Every stallion here, and the ones before us for that matter. It’s been handed down through the generations that a small group of centaurs made this forest their home before even Rome was built. They called themselves the Sons of Chiron, and we still call ourselves that after all this time.”

“Wait,” Mathias stepped forward as he spoke, “Chiron was real?”

“Given the fact we were mystically transformed into centaurs, I wouldn’t find it hard to believe there was once a centaur named Chiron, but I can’t speak to the rest of the mythology.”

Mathias sighed and shrugged his shoulders. “I guess that makes sense when you put it that way.”

“So, is this permanent then? Are we centaurs forever?” Strangely, Jostein didn’t feel scared as he asked that question.

“Ultimately that’s up to you two.” Ernst said and motioned for them both to follow him. They walked back towards the shrine. “You have a choice, the transformation can be undone, you will return to the human you were before you entered this clearing.”

“Is there a ‘but’ in there?” Jostein asked as they stood in front of the statue.

“Just your bare pink one when you wake up without pants.” Ernst chuckled. “You’ll remember everything, but you won't be able to come back.”

“And if we stay this way?”

“Then we welcome you into our home, we have a small settlement not too far from here, safe from the outside world. We’ll teach you both how to survive and thrive here. I can’t make the choice for you, but I can say I have no regrets about my decision to stay.”

Jostein and Mathias exchanged a look. “Can we discuss it for a bit?”

“Of course, it’s a huge decision to make, and you have plenty of time to talk before sunset.”

“Sunset?”

“After sunset if you do nothing, you will remain like this. I guess you could say procrastination will make the decision for you in the end. I’ll be over there with the others while you make your decision.”

”Um, thanks.” Jostein said as he watched Ernst return to where the other centaurs were standing and chatting.

Mathias reached out and took Jostein by the hand. “What do you think?”

“I don’t know…” Jostein shook his head. “I like how this feels, but can we really just run away from home and live in the woods?”

Mathias glanced back at the gathering of centaurs. “Apparently we can do just that, if we want to.”

“Yeah, ok, there’s proof standing over there, but what about the rest of the world?

The chestnut stallion smiled softly. “Honestly, the only person I would miss is standing next to me on his own set of hooves.”

“Mathias…”

“I mean it, even before we took our friendship to, ah, the next level, you're the one I would miss if it was just me standing here.”

Jostein sighed but smiled afterwards. He took Mathias by the hands and looked into his green eyes.

“I’m going to keep standing beside you, no matter how many legs we have.”

Mathias laughed. “God, you sound so cringy!” Even though he teased him, he squeezed Jostein’s hands tightly. “Do you want to stay here, stay like this?”

“I think I do. I love how this body feels,” Jostein looked over the rim of his glasses, “and the way you feel under it.”

Mathias blushed deeply, but smiled. “Let’s go let them know our decision then.”

***

Five years later

“All I’m saying is I would have won that last tournament if I hadn’t sneezed.” Jostein complained as he walked down the forest path.

Mathias shook his head “Jostein, I love you, but you lost the archery tournament by far more than just one shot.”

Jostein grumbled slightly as they walked side by side. Suddenly, they heard a noise coming through the trees and they drew to a stop.

“What was…” Mathias was cut off by a loud cry.

“Oh!” Jostein’s eyes lit up behind his glasses. “I think that’s coming from the shrine!”

“I think you’re right,” he motioned with his hand, “ let’s go check it out!”

They turned around and trotted back down the path, turning off of it when they came close to the clearing. The entire way they heard more than a few cries of passion. Jostein smirked, feeling his own cock start to pop out from his sheath, but he managed to calm down by the time they reached the tree line.

“Where’s Ernst?” Mathias whispered.

“Damn, he’s on the other side of the forest collecting mushrooms for that jager sauce of his.” Jostein rolled his eyes.

Mathias shook his head. “Of all the times…”

“I guess it’s up to us then.” Jostein adjusted the glasses on his face before walking forward. “Hello! Welcome newcomers!”

Mathias walked out a few steps behind him. “Don’t worry, we can explain everything.”
