The day has finally come. The wolves are stepping out from the shadows.

Chapter 14 - Breaking News

A large stack of empty pizza boxes were on the coffee table and the TV was playing a movie the couple had both seen a hundred times, not that Darcy’s or Brendan’s eyes were on the screen. Today was their wedding anniversary and they were spending Wednesday night exactly the way they wanted. As soon as Brendan returned home from work with the pizza they stripped out of their clothes and shifted to their wolf forms. After the food was finished, they started on one another.

In the light of the TV Brendan was on top of his wife, nuzzling and licking her neck tenderly. All the while she was gently running her claws down his back through his blond fur. Even in the low light of the living room, the contrast of their fur was obvious. Darcy’s fur was a rich chocolate brown that faded to almost black at her hands and feet, or rather paws. Brendan’s fur was more uniformly blonde, the only change was his sun bleached blond hair on top of his head.

Brendan’s muzzle slid down his wife’s body. Down along her collar bone and into her furry cleavage. Darcy placed her hands on the side of his head and guided his muzzle to a nipple. She let out a low and shuddering sigh as she felt his hot mouth engulf her sensitive nub and long tongue began to tease it. Brendan lingered, licking, sucking, and gently biting the nipple before moving onto the other one. Darcy was squirming now under her husband and with a low rumbling growl pushed him lower on her body.

He got the hint, and Brendan continued to slide down her body, nuzzling and licking while drinking in her scent. His claws tenderly grazed her sides as he slid down and she let out a groan of pleasure. Brendan slipped down between Darcy’s legs and his long tongue began to lap at her slit. Her back arched off the couch for a moment as she moaned loudly. He immediately felt Darcy’s powerful thighs squeezing his head firmly as he continued. Darcy was almost whining as he forced her legs to spread open wide.

Darcy suddenly shifted her body, pulling away from her husband. Brendan blinked confused for a moment, until he saw her flipping over on her knees and leaning over the armrest of the couch. If that wasn’t enough of a hint, Darcy raised her tail and presented. Brendan smirked as he quickly got into position behind her. His cock slipped in easily enough into her slick sex and they both let out a moan.

Brendan gripped her hips tightly by the waist and started to rock back and forth. Darcy pushed back against each thrust. She looked back over her shoulder at him, her eyes brimming with love and need. Brendan dug his claws into her and stared to thrust with much more force. Darcy yipped, and held on tightly to the armrest as he almost pushed her off the couch. She growled and squeezed around his cock. Brendan growled back in response and gripped her even tighter. Darcy lifted her head up and closed her eyes. She could feel it coming, but even then it still shot through her like a lightning bolt. She opened her mouth and let out a long howl as her body went completely rigid. Brendan quickly joined his wife, their howls blending into a wolf song of pleasure and love.

Darcy felt shaky on her legs and collapsed down onto the couch. Brendan laid down beside her on the couch holding her tightly as they both panted. Their long legs intertwined as they enjoyed the afterglow.

“Happy anniversary.” Brendan whispered into her pointed ear.

“Mmmm, happy anniversary. I told you this was better than going out to a fancy dinner.”

Her husband chuckled softly behind her. “It was nice not having to wait to get you home.”

“Damn straight.” She turned and nuzzled against Brendan.

It was then that the evening was disturbed by Darcy’s phone going off. The tiny speaker playing Hungry Like the Wolf meant it was someone in their pack calling. Brendan let out a long sigh, but Darcy actively growled as she grasped around on the end table to find her phone.

“I told everyone tonight was…” She paused when she saw who exactly was calling. “It’s Madison.” she said before answering the call. “Hello?”

“Hey Darcy, I’m so sorry to call you tonight. I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.”

“If you had called a bit sooner you would have gone to voicemail.” Darcy said as she sat up. “I take it this is something important.”

“Yeah, it is, I need everyone to come over to our place tonight, but I promise it’ll be short and sweet.”

“We’ll need a few to get changed and cleaned up.”

“I understand, just come as soon as you can.”

“We will, bye.”

Darcy ended the call and sighed, turning to her husband. “So much for our evening.”

“It’s not completely ruined. Madison said it was a short meeting, and it’s still pretty early in the evening. We’ve got plenty of time to still celebrate. Besides, on the way back we can stop for some burgers.”

“You always try to find a bright side, don’t you?” she smiled slightly and scratched under his chin.

***

Brendan pulled into an open parking space at the apartment complex. He recognized several of the cars around him as belonging to members of their pack. He switched off the ignition and turned to his wife.

“I think we’re the last ones here.” He said softly.

Darcy let out a small sigh. “They can’t blame us for that, we did have plans for tonight.”

“True, but don’t worry, we’re not done celebrating just yet.” Brendan leaned over and kissed her softly.

“Let’s hope so. I know Madison, she wouldn’t have interrupted us for something that could be handled via text.”

Brandon nodded and they left the car and walked up to apartment 101A. They didn’t even have to knock as James was waiting by the door for them.

“Hey, sorry to call you in. Happy anniversary, by the way.” he said as they entered the apartment.

“Thanks.” Brendan said, leaning in to give James a quick hug.

Darcy hugged him as well before James closed and locked the door. The reasonably large living room was already full with the rest of their pack. Everyone was still in their human form and dressed, which was a bit unusual for a gathering.

“Sorry, we’re keeping things low-key tonight.” James said as they found their seats.

Madison cleared her throat and the quiet chatting died down.

“Thanks for coming out on short notice tonight, especially Darcy and Brendan, I’m sorry we had to interrupt your plans.”

“So, I take it this is important?” Mike said from his spot on the couch next to his wife Ada.

“Yes, but it’s not a bad thing.” Madison nodded. “Something has come down the grapevine that involves all of us, not just our pack but all wolves.” She paused to let that sink in. “Things are at a point where people are starting to notice strange things are going on.”

Ada turned and smacked Mike on the arm. “I told you we shouldn't have fooled around in the backyard!”

“Calm down, it’s not anyone’s fault. It was going to happen sooner or later with enough of us. Anyway, the Grandparents have decided it’s time to take the next step.”

“Next step?” Colin leaned forward a bit in his chair.

“Long before any of us were even born the wolves were involved in a secret war of sorts with a group known as the Hunters. In the last year of the conflict the Hunters released an engineered virus to attack the wolves in a last ditch effort to eradicate them. In the end many wolves died from it, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to win the day and the Hunters were ultimately defeated.”

“That sounds good to me.” Sharon responded while crossing her arms.

“It wasn’t a complete victory. The wolves who survived were left infertile, and were slowly dying out. The Grandparent Wolves were cubs at the time, the last generation. As their name suggests, they were getting older and starting to die themselves. They didn’t want to die out and decided to break their own cultural taboo and started to taint humans. That’s where we come in.”

“There must be thousands of us by now, I mean my entire office are all wolves.” Darcy said with a slight smile.

“Yes, thanks to you, in fact.” Madison smirked back. “We’re not dying out anytime soon, and we want to keep it that way. So, we are going to live alongside humans this time, rather than in the shadows.”

“You mean, coming out in the open?” Brendan said, giving Darcy’s hand a small squeeze.

Madison nodded. “It’s come to my attention that this was always their plan. Next Friday is when it’s going down.

“Well, I’ll have to clear my calendar then.” Tyler said as he pulled out his phone.

There were a few chuckles at this.

“You laugh, but you are all going to want to do that.”James spoke up with a smile. “What time was decided on again, Maddie?”

“We want to start gathering at Wild Grove Park around three ‘o clock, try to get there at four at the latest.”

“Do we need to bring anything?” Jayde said as she tapped the date and time into her own calendar.

“Just your courage.” James replied softly.

“Are you alright, Karina?” Mabel, the makeup artist, asked as she finished with her.

“Hmm?” Karina had been lost in her own thoughts.

“You look nervous, like it’s your first day again.”

“Oh, heh, sorry, I just have something on my mind outside of today’s broadcast.” She smiled quickly, her training kicking in.

“If you say so,” the middle aged woman said as she removed the smock from the anchorwoman, “well, you’re good to go.”

“Thanks Mable, you did a great job as always.” Karina got up off of the chair and left the dressing area for the set.

She was nervous, but not in the least about being in front of the cameras. Today was the day, and Karina had no doubt that the people at home were going to remember this broadcast. She took a few deep breaths before letting herself onto the set.

The news set for Channel 37 wasn’t as impressive in person as it was on the screen. A large portion of it was just a green screen backdrop. Still, Karina had wanted to sit behind the desk ever since she was a kid watching the news with her father. He had been so proud of her when Karina got the job at Channel 37 three years ago, he would brag about it to anyone and everyone, even when in the hospital. Karina felt a little disappointed that he didn’t make it to see her biggest story, but she had a feeling he would still see it.

“Karina?” Robert, the senior anchor, noticed her expression. “Are you alright?”

“Oh, sorry Robert, I was just thinking about my dad.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”

“It’s alright, I appreciate the concern. Better I get it out now than before the broadcast starts, right?” she smiled slightly.

“Ah, I see you do take my advice on occasion” he smirked.

“On occasion.” Karina smirked back.

“Alright, let’s get into positions, people!” The director called out, “We're live in three minutes!”

Robert and Karina took their places behind the desk as the final checks were run. Karina took a deep breath before putting on a perfect camera face.

Too late to be nervous now. she thought to herself as the opening began to run. Showtime!

They were cued and they began their introductions.

“Good evening, I’m Robert Stanton.

“And I’m Karina Drake. Here are the stories at five.”

“First up. There was a three car pile up on the Blackton Street Bridge just minutes ago. Katie Dennings is live at the scene. We will go to her…” Robert stopped, as his monitor went off in his ear. “One moment, we have a breaking news bulletin.” His years of experience helped him to quickly recover. “There is an incident currently going on at Wild Grove Park. We are going live to the park with correspondent Bill Hennings.”

On a monitor the shocked face of Bill filled the screen.

“Bill? What’s going on there?” Robert asked.

There was a delay in the response before the correspondent replied. “Robert! Oh god…this-this is insane!”

“Bill? What’s going on?” Karina did her best to feign concern in her voice.

“There’s this gathering of…more just keep showing up…We, I saw them change! It’s not a hoax, it's real!”

“Bill! Get a hold of yourself!” Robert almost snapped at his colleague.

Bill took several deep breaths. “There is a gathering at the park, one that seems to be growing by the second. People keep arriving and, uh removing their clothes before…I can't believe this. I watched it happen, we have it on tape and I can’t believe it…All the rumors floating around the internet were true. Werewolves! They’re real! Jimmy!” he addressed his camera operator, “Just show them!”

The camera quickly turned, it was shaky at first but Jimmy quickly stabilized. Gathered in the middle of the park were a good twenty or so creatures. They certainly looked like werewolves. They were standing together, looking out at the crowd of people and reporters who were watching their expanding gathering. Several people stepped out from the crowd to join the group. Jimmy quickly blurred the feed as they stripped down, but even blurry the transformation could still be seen. The sound of sirens could be heard as the police finally arrived on the scene.

“Oh thank god! The police are here!” Bill called out. “Hopefully they can get things under control!”

Jimmy swung the camera to show the police arriving in several cars. The officers quickly exited their vehicles and started to advance, when suddenly a pair of cops rushed forward and stripped off their uniforms.

“Oh god! The cops are…”

Jimmy shifted the camera enough to keep their lower halves out of frame and a decent video of the two cops shifting into their wolf form was broadcast.

“Dear god…” Robert whispered as he watched the feed. “Just what is going on?” He took a moment to shake it off before addressing the camera. “Clearly, whatever is going on in the park is-”

“Excuse me, Robert,” Karina interrupted. “We are getting flooded with reports that what is happening in Wild Grove Park is not an isolated incident. Reports are coming in from all around the state, no, more than that.”

“This is unbelievable!” Robert was shaking his head, “It’s like something out of a movie. Are we expected to believe that these…werewolves are real?"

“Wolves, Robert.” Karina interjected.

He turned to face his co-anchor “Excuse me?”

She tilted her head slightly to the side. “Werewolf is sort of an offensive term.”

Robert was obviously having a hard time maintaining his professionalism. “Just what are you talking about?”

“Since the wolves are coming out from the shadows, it’s only fair to address them properly.” Karina said calmly.

“What?”

Karina was sitting straight up with a small smile on her face. She was as cool and collected as if she was reporting on a human interest story. She slowly turned from her co-anchor back to the camera.

“If the video from the park wasn’t enough for you and everyone else at home, allow me to clear everything up.” Karina said with a slight smile.

She unfastened the top two buttons on her blouse and slipped out of her blazer before closing her eyes.

“Karina?” Robert asked, but he quickly gasped as he watched what happened.

The young anchor’s nails lengthened and thickened into claws as rich auburn hair started to cover her hands. Karina kicked off her heels behind the desk as her feet elongated and shifted into paws. Back above the desk, her blouse bulged as her muscles thickened underneath. More of the auburn fur could be seen as the sleeves ripped and teared at the seams. Karina’s fur grew up her neck as her face and head started to change. Her ears grew long and pointed and migrated up to the top of her head. They twitched and poked out of her previously perfectly styled auburn hair, now covered in fine fur. The front of her face grew out, her mouth and nose shifting into a lupine muzzle. Karina opened her mouth and let out a sigh, making visible her large pointed canine teeth.

Karina opened her warm brown eyes and smiled with a wolfish grin. She then reached behind herself to free her tail.

“That feels so much better now, though I did have to leave my clothes on, I don’t want to get the station in any trouble with the FCC.” She turned to see Robert almost cowering in his chair, too scared to run. “Relax Robert, I’m still Karina under all this fur. I’m not about to jump out and attack you.” She turned back to the camera. “None of us are going to. We are your friends and family, your coworkers, the people you interact with on a daily basis.”

“Cut the feed! Stop filming!” the director could be heard shouting clearly over the broadcast.

“Charles, they aren’t going to listen to you.” Karina addressed the director.” Karl and Steven are wolves, as is everyone in the booth.” On cue the camera operators started to shift.

Karina turned back to the camera as Charles ran from the set. “We’re not humans anymore, but we’re still people. We want to live out in the open with the rest of the world, not take it over or anything silly like that.”

Robert looked around the set at the wolves now manning the cameras then he turned to give his co-anchor a hard look.

I’d be a fool to miss out of the biggest story of my life. He took a deep breath to steady himself and push back his surprise and fear to do his job. “Karina, I apologize for my reaction. It was quite a shock to me.”

“That is completely understandable.” she smiled, “I’m sure there are a lot of questions you and the viewers have about all this. I'll be happy to answer them, if I can.”

“How long have you been a wolf?”

“I’ve been a wolf for over three weeks now. As for when this all started it was months ago, I don’t know for sure.”

“I see.” That was when she started to look more fit, now that I think about it. “And just how many wolves are there?”

“Oh, I couldn’t even guess. Thousands, tens of thousands by now. We’ve been busy spreading it around all this time.”

“From what you're saying you and the others were made into wer, um, excuse me, wolves?”

“Yes, but it’s not by attacking with a bite or our claws. Wolves have a substance in our bodies we call essence. We can refine it into a fine crystal powder and when ingested by humans they will eventually become one of us.”

“And how long does that take, for the change to occur?”

“Oh, it depends completely on the dosage. It could be twelve hours or longer, or just a few minutes. The transformation isn’t painful, far from it as any of my fellow wolves can attest.” Karina let out a soft giggle. “Though new paws tearing through shoes can be less than pleasant.”

Robert glanced down at her feet below the desk then back up to her. “I can imagine. This process of making humans into wolves, Who is responsible for this?”

“First of all, we call it Tainting. It sounds bad, but it’s an old term, dating back centuries. And I can say none of it was done with any malice. As for who is responsible, that would be a group we refer to as the Grandparent Wolves.”

“And who are these Grandparent Wolves?”

“They were the last generation of naturally born wolves. The full story of what happened to them is long and I don’t have all the details even if I were to share what I know. The relevant part is they were rendered sterilized and were on the verge of extinction. Throughout history they had kept to themselves, never using their abilities to do more than survive in an often harsh world.”

“And what about the legends we all grew up with? Is there any truth to them at all?”

“Not much. The moon, for instance, has no effect on us in the slightest. In fact, we picked today because it is a new moon to prove that point.”

“I wasn’t aware of the moon’s phase, but I can see the logic in that.”

“Undoubtedly wolves in medieval times were spotted once or twice. But of course this was before cameras were a thing. Speaking of which, if you look on the internet you can find a few pictures of us that were caught on people’s cameras recently. We knew we couldn’t hide forever in today’s world of security cameras, smartphones, and the internet.”

“Isn’t that the truth.” Robert smiled and chuckled, he was growing a bit more comfortable in the interview.

“But getting back to the past, add in a few sightings, imagination, and a healthy dose of religious fervor, and suddenly werewolves were being hunted down along with witches. In the end, it was only other humans being hurt by it.”

“True, but still, you must know a lot of people are going to be scared by you.”

“Frankly, I think a man with a gun is far more frightening than a wolf in their fur. You don’t need silver bullets to kill one of us, lead will work just fine. We know this will be a shock to the world, and will take some time for humans to adjust. But I want to remind you and all the viewers out there, that human or wolf, we are all people.”

“Karina, I am curious, why didn’t you, um…”

“Taint you like I did with the rest of the broadcast crew?”

“Heh, yes that sums it up.”

“First of all, it was important to show that we can exist beside humans, so having a wolf and a human talking together was important.”

“I see, and any other reasons?”

“Well, I couldn’t take away your chance to interview a wolf on the air in the middle of the biggest story of your life.” She smiled widely. “You have truly helped to mentor me since I first came to Channel 37, and I do appreciate it.”

“Thank you, I’m honestly touched by that.” His smile was more natural than the practiced smile of an anchor.

“You are quite welcome. Although if you are interested in joining us, I can easily make the arrangements.” she winked playfully.

“I, uh, I would have to think about it.”

“I’d love to continue our interview, but I’m told Bill has an update from Wild Grove Park.”

“Yes, We’re going back live to the wolf gathering in the park with Bill Hennings.”

***

The quad at the State University was full of wolves. Not all of them were students, they were joined by teachers and staff. Marie was standing tall and proud in her fur. Right beside her was Neal. His hand was in hers and she gave it a small squeeze.

“I’m glad you came down for this, Neal, I don’t think I could have done this alone.”

“I know I couldn’t without you. We started this together, and I want to be with you to see where it goes.”

“I just hope they don’t kick us all out of school for this stunt.”

“Given that it’s not just students standing here, I don’t think they will.”

“Yeah, well, assuming we don’t get arrested, I’m looking forward to spending the rest of the weekend with you. I know I have my pack, but it’s not the same without you here.”

“I know.” he gave her hand a squeeze. “I should tell you, I went forward with transferring to State. I’ll be here with you next year, assuming they don’t throw us out.”

“Are you sure you’ll be ok with that?”

“Yes. I’ve spoken to some people in the industry, and it’s more about certifications you have rather than where you got your degree from. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine, and more importantly I’ll be with you, at least when we’re out of class.”

“I just hope this works, although the people watching us look more curious than scared, that’s a good sign.”

When Bobbi had first arrived at the park she felt so nervous. When she met up with her pack it helped a bit, but she was still scared about the plan. Bobbi loved being a wolf, it was the best thing that ever happened to her. Whether she was in her skin or her sandy brown fur she felt beautiful, something she had never felt in her life before she was tainted. Was it worth the risk coming out in the open? When the time was right, Bobbi stripped out of her clothes with her pack. They ignored the stares and shouting of the humans in the park as they bared their bodies. The screams were a little disconcerting as she shifted to her wolf form, but not entirely unexpected. They joined other packs of wolves in the center of the park. Seeing the other wolves helped a bit, there is strength in numbers.

It was interesting seeing the occasional person pushing through the crowd to join them. She was worried when the cops showed up at first, but when several officers came and joined them in their fur it was a relief. The police were there, but were doing little. Most likely they were waiting on orders to come down.

Bobbi’s ears twitched as she heard someone edging closer to the wolves. Turning her head slightly she saw a young man around her age trying to sneak his way closer to the gathering. He was dressed casually in slacks and a golf shirt. When his eyes met Bobbi’s he stopped immediately, a slightly embarrassed look on his face.

Not wanting to make things any more awkward than they already were, Bobbi smiled and greeted him. “Hello there.”

“Uh, hi…” He flushed slightly, but Bobbi's nose told her it wasn’t entirely in embarrassment.

“Can I help you?” She hoped her smile didn’t come off as intimidating.

“I, ah, Just wanted to get a closer look to see if, um…” he kept looking away, afraid to make eye contact.

“If we’re real?” She raised an eyebrow.

He covered his face with his hand. “God, that makes me sound stupid.”

Bobbi giggled, “Relax. Honestly I’m still a little nervous about all of this myself.”

“Who are you talking to, Bobbie?” Mandy asked, as she moved to get a better look at the human.

“Oh, I haven’t gotten his name yet.” she turned back to the human, her ears canting forward.

“It’s Greg.” He offered, “Sorry, I should have said that sooner.”

“I’m Bobbie, nice to meet you, Greg.” she reached out with her hand and he took it, giving a firm shake.

“So,” he scratched the back of his head, “I guess the rumors on the internet were true about you.”

“Looks that way. Turns out there were wolves loose in our city.” Janet and Clara laughed beside her.

“I was following it, I was half convinced it was some kind of hoax but the pictures looked too good to just dismiss. And now I’m here and saw you, ahh, transform.”

“Shift,” she corrected, “and do you mean me specifically?” Bobbi tilted her head slightly to the side.

“Actually, yes. I was locking up my bike when you pulled up. I wasn’t following you exactly, but we were heading in the same direction and then you kind of met with your friends and I was just walking by when you all started to strip.”

“I can’t blame you for staring at that.” Bobbi chuckled, “But I didn’t really hold onto my modesty when I became a wolf so it doesn’t really bother me.”

“Or any of us, obviously.” Tammy added and a ripple of laughter spread through the pack.

Greg’s eyes widened slightly. “Became a wolf? Did you used to be human?”

Bobbi nodded. “We all were, yes.”

“That sounds so cool.” Greg smiled widely, “What was it like?”

“I certainly don’t have any complaints.” she smiled and winked at Greg, “In fact. I would highly recommend it.”

“Sir!” an officer approached them. “Please step back.”

“But, we were just talking!” Greg defended himself

“Get back, Now!” the officer snapped.

Dejected Greg started to back away. Bobbi was annoyed, she had enjoyed how the conversation was going. But she wasn’t about to just give up.

“Hey Greg! She called out after him. “My number is 284-555-2705, Text me!”

Greg’s eyes lit up as he pulled out his phone to quickly add her number in.

“Well, looks like Bobbi is trying to recruit for our pack.” Clara said with a grin.

“And he was definitely interested in Bobbi, I could smell it from over here.” Bruce, Clara’s husband, chuckled.

“No need to embarrass him.” Bobbi chided. “I’m sure there's a few people out there like him who were following the rumors and hoping they were true.” She looked over across the perimeter the police were establishing to Greg and smiled. “He is cute though.” I hope everything turns out alright, because I really want to chat more with Greg tonight…

On the large screen that dominated one wall of his office Director Lester Mueller watched a matrix of news feeds. They were all covering the same event, or rather the local instance of the event.

“So, that’s it then. The secret is out.” Lester said with a sigh.

“Just one secret, and we have no intention of revealing the rest.” Sarah said with a smile.

“Still, the point of our agency is to keep the supernatural out of the public eye. Even if we’re wolves it’s still hard to accept it.” Cheryl, the senior agent said with a small shake of her head.

“I’m surprised you haven’t gotten a call yet, Director.” Sarah motioned to the silent phone on his desk.

“That’s because I unplugged it. I wanted a bit to compose myself before I’m talking to my superiors, or possibly the president.” He let out another sigh. “But I suppose it’s time to face that music. Too bad I don’t have a box of donuts to smooth things over, right Agent Bishop?”

Sarah chuckled softly, “Sorry, the bakery was closed today, the owners had some plans apparently.”

“Apparently.” He picked up the wire for his phone and was about to plug it in. “You can both go, I’d rather deal with this by myself.”

Sarah nodded and went to leave the office. Cheryl lagged behind.

“Lester, you know I’m here, if you need me.”

The director smiled softly. “I know. Now get out of here so I can get chewed out.”

Once the door closed behind the two agents Lester plugged in his phone. Immediately it began to ring.

“Here we go…” He sighed one more time before picking up the receiver.
