I woke up at dawn to see that Ayrean was standing by my bike and we had company in the form of four figures standing in the shadows of a rock formation I hadn't noticed last night. Two were twin dragons who blended in well with their surroundings despite the fact that one was white and the other pure black. One looked like he was testing prehistoric Dna, and the other was a snow leapord with wings. I sighed and mummbled "It appears that either Genetech is sending people after me again, or these four are just exploring and happened to find me." I sghed and rolled up the blankets then set them on my bike and sat down. I glanced at Ayrean and handed her my helmet then wrote directions back to the school and handed them to her. She looked at me and I said "Head back to the school and talk to your cousin. I'll be back in a few hours, I just want to get one last swim in before I leave, and you're cousin's probably worried about you." She gave me a look that said she didn't believe a thing I was saying, but got on my bike and started it. I grinned wondering how I ended up making friends who were naturals at driving a bike, and watched her go.

When I was sure Ayrean wasn't coming back I reached over my shoulder and drew my sword while watching the four in the shadows. The two dragons, who I realized were a pure dragon and a half dragon watched me carefully, as if looking for an area to stick a blade. The cross between prehistoric reptiles studied me with cunning eyes, that didn't reflect her possible intentions. I glanced at the final one of the four and mummbled "Seems strange to see a winged snow leopard with a vampire's eyes." I sighed thinking it strange that even in today's modern scientific world no one figured out what the lycanthropy gene and the vampire gene originally came from, though we knew they were spread by enzymes. I sighed softly and rubbed my own teeth thinking about the fact I shared traits of both lycans and vampires. Which made me wonder were they possibly a branch of evolution that no one had taken into account? I shook my head and looked at the four of them then asked "Ok, so what's with a group of obviously trained fighters doing stalking a teenager who doesn't spend any time working out?"

The snow leopard looked at me and I felt something stirring in the air around her. I shook my head figuring that I'd been reading to many stories about magic and myths. I blinked when I saw a talisman hanging from the snow leopards neck, and a pair of medallions signifgying someone who trained as an assassin hanging from the necks of the two dragons. I glanced at the fourth person and couldn't figure out why she had no symbols of any sort to say what she was trained as. After a few seconds the black dragon looked at me and said "We came to warn you that if you keep going the way you are, you'll end up on our list." I smiled mischieviously then flipped him off and studied his sister who was the pure white half dragon. She looked at me questioningly and I just smiled then started to walk away. After about five steps I had to duck because a japanese throwing star went flying past my head. I turned around and slammed the black dragon into the walll while pointing my sword at his sister's throat.

They looked at me and I said "I accept the warning, but here's mine. You touch me or my friends for any reason other than we caused you personal problems I'll kill you both." They studied me and I said softly "I don't care if it costs me everything, you harm my friends I'll kill you for what you did. Do you understand me?" They nodded and I walked away growling softly.I sheathed my sword and was hit from behind by something. I winced as it knocked me forward a few feet. After a few seconds I slowly got up and turned around. The two dragons were gone, the strange snow leopard was watching me and the reptile was nowhere to be seen. I closed my eyes and listened carefuly then stuck out my fist and caught her in the stomach as she ran past. I grabbed a hold of her shirt and slammed her into the ground then twisted an arm behind her back and said softly "Don't pick a fight with a hybrid, especially one who has the abilities of a feral, unless you want to be harmed immensely."

She growled at me and I felt her body start to shift under me. I blinked and saw that her body was shifting into that of a large feral crocodile mixed with a velociraptor both from before the cretacious period. I shivered as she threw me off and started growing. I growled and drew my sword then thought better of it and dropped to all fours. The shift from hybrid to feral took no time at all, and I noticed my feral form appeared even larger than the last time I'd used it. My subconscious shivered at the thought that maybe as I grew older and more experienced my feral form also grew. I growled and latched onto her neck before she could react then started shaking my head trying to get a grip through her scales. I felt my teeth slip under a scale and ripped it off without thinking then bit down and started drinking her blood. She started scratching the shit out of my sides and back then snarled adn tried rolling so I'd be crushed. I held on until she stopped struggling then let go and bit my own paw. I rubbed the blood into the wound and jumped back as my body started shifting back to normal.

I slowly walked over to her as she reverted back to her more humanoid form and studied her noticing that she had a few tattoos and scars across her back and shoulders. I looked at the snow leopard and slowly walked over with my hands open to show her I meant no harm. She studied me and I said "I think the four of us got off to a bad start, I'm Jake and you are?" She glared at me and I held up my hands sighing then explained "I didn't intend to pick a fight with the hybrid girl. I just reacted on instinct, I'm sorry if I seem like an ass because of that. My feral side sort of won the coin toss between the two of us." I shook my head as the feral and my subconscious representation of myself started fighting again then walked away from the snow leapord to check on the reptile. As I walked over to her she slowly got up and looked at me. I stared her in the eyes and said softly "I'm sorry I hurt you. You may have attacked first, but that was no reason for me to act the way I did. Truce?" I held out a hand hoping she would shake with me. She smiled slightly and we shook hands, then she walked off and started speaking with the snow leapord.

I blinked when I felt a pair of blades touching my neck and I heard the black dragon say softly "Move and you die, boy." I was getting really tired of people calling me boy by this point, even if most of those people had been in my head, so I grabbed onto their blades and pushed them away from my throat. I heard one of them let in a slight gasp as I cut myself to the bone on their blades then twisted around and pulled them from their hands. They stared at me and I growled softly then slammed their blades into the ground as my hands started to heal. They stared at me and he asked "What the hell are you?" I grinned seeing that he still had the same expresionless look on his face while his sister showed just a tiny bit of surprise. I picked up the blades which were a pair of nardachi's, or long katana's, I noticed that they still had to large knives, and sets of knives all along their belts. I studied the male and noticed that he had a compact shotgun and a sniper rifle. He looked at me and said "Since we know your name it's only fair for us to give you ours. I'm Nevyn and she's Arzosah. I don't know who the other two are, and honestly since they are getting in my way, I'm ready to kill them or at least leave them."

I growled softly thinking that for a dragon with a thin yet muscular build he had the attitude of a dragon who was a hundred feet tall and protected a horde like in old children's stories. I glanced at his sister and she seemed to be thinking the same thing. She was almost as hard as him, except her eyes tended to give her away. I looked at them and asked "Are you two 19 or younger?" They held up one finger then walked off to talk about something in private. I sighed and leaned on the rock they'd been hiding under while trying to adjust to the feeling of the new blades on my hips. After a few minutes I pulled out my phone and called Dasher. She answered on the first ring and I explained a small amount of what had happened and told her I'd be there in a few hours tops. Hopefully in an hour, but that was looking unlikely. I told her not to worry about anyone picking me up, and that if I had to i'd run home. She mentioned cross country and I told her this would be twice as easy as a meet then hung up.

The snow leopard and the prehistoric hybrid walked over then smiled at me and said "Hi jake." After a few seconds the hybrid went quiet and the snow leopard continued "I'm Shandi Dracul, my hybrid friend is Dwayne." I blinked and she covered her mouth to hold back a yawn then continued "We were sent with the assassin twins to check on you, but honestly I'm thinking about quitting this job, because your obviously not a creature of darkness." I reached out and grabbed her necklace then studied it until she yanked it back. She looked at me and said "Is something bothering you about my necklace?" I shook my head slowly as the darker voice in my mind said softly "I see you're still trying to understand the old tounge, boy. Do you think it will protect you from me or or your bestial counter part?" I snarled at him without letting it show on my face then studied the girl trying to understand what those markings had meant. I knew they were similar to the markings I had all across my body, which I was thinking about wrapping tape around my arms to stop them from showing. I walked over to my bag, which I'd taken off my bike, and grabbed out some medical tape. After cutting it to the length I needed, I started wrapping it around my arms, since the marks had actually spread to them.

I looked up as the Dwayne and Shandi walked back over and grinned slightly. I looked at Shandi first and said "Dracul as in Vlad Dracul. The vampire who strived, to a point, to make people understand a bit more about his condition?" She nodded slowly then I turned to Dwayne and asked "Are your tattoos meant to represent a gang?" She nodded and I said "Wow, I knew a few mobsters back in New York, but I hear the gangs in Mexico are really different." She nodded while studying me as if trying to figure out how I could get that information from one look. I glanced back at Shandi and shivered when I saw a dark shadow seem to materialize behind her as an inner voice said "She has her own demons chasing her. Do you think she may know how to help you face yours, or are you to afraid to ask for help?"I shook my head ignoring it and studied Shandi's necklace again. She looked at me questioningly and I said "Sorry, I seem to have a feeling that I've seen those markings before, and I think I know where. Do you guys mind going to the library in town with me?" Shandi nodded, and Dwayne just shrugged slightly. I grinned as the twins walked up and said "You two want to join us, or do you have other places to be?" They gave me a look that I couldn't quite read then walked off.

I started back toward the road then stopped when I noticed my two new friends weren't with me. I turned around to see them driving up in a very nice modern day charger. I let out a wolf whistle and they just looked at me. I sighed and slipped into the back then slipped into a light sleep as we headed toward the library. I woke up as they stopped the car then hopped out and ran up the library steps yawning. The librarian nodded to me then blinked as the girls walked past and gave me a look that said 'More of them?' I shrugged and walked back to the historical fiction section and looked for a book who's author shared my name. I grabbed it and the three other books by him then sat down at a table and started flipping through them. I blinked when in the table of contents I saw the page number for markings and the page number for 'ancient languages' then turned back to the symbols section first. I shivered when I saw that the markings on Shandi's necklace were those of the old gods, and that the original marking I bore supposedly represented fate in the old religions.

With that done I flipped back to the languagers section and saw that the writing on Shandi's necklace announced to the world that she was a paladin of the gods that we would call order. I had a feeling that dark shape I'd seen worked for chaos and was a dark knight, the opposite of a paladin. I shivered and closed the book then flipped through the other three reading what they said. After a few minutes I picked them up and walked to the check out counter. The librarian stamped them and the three of us walked outside slowly. I shoved the books in my bag and started for the high school. The girls got into the car and caught up to me. Shandi who was now in the passenger seat looked at me and asked "So what were you looking for in those books?" I shrugged since I didn't really know myself. She studied me and asked me "Are you a vampire, Jake?" I stopped dead in my tracks completely surprised she would ask me that then looked at her questioningly. She smiled slightly and said "I'm a couple of hundred years old, even though I look as if I'm only eighteen. I was bitten by lord Vlad Drcaul a long time ago, so when you mentioned him and his quest I was curious to know if you'd met him." I slowly shook my head then started walking again.

After a few minutes I looked at the sky and said softly "I do need blood like a vampire, but flesh and other substances are still edible to me. I don't really know how to explain what I am. My family seems to think it's all in a genetech project I was a part of, but I have a feeling it goes back further than that. I mean, why did I take the name of an author who's supposedly been dead, or at least missing, since back in 2020?" She stared at me and I said "Sorry those are just a few of the thoughts running around in my mind the last few weeks. For some reason I have a feeling that Genetech is actually studying what we call the supernatural." She stared at me still, so I looked away, and ended up walking into a pole. I slowly got up and shook my head then looked at her and said "See what happens when beautiful girl's stare at me???!!!!????? I end up not paying attention and hurting myself." This caused her to blush then start laughing. I grinned and said "I say you're beautiful, and I mean it, but I am worried that you don't seem to have a lot of fun in your life. Does that have something to do with being a paladin?" She stared at me surprised and I said "I saw your necklace, and the author I was talking about wrote about an ancient language that belongs to the old gods. I translated what was on your necklace from memory, it's interesting."

She studied my face and said softly "You're strange, but it's in a good way. I'm surprised that you were able to hold onto what my necklace said. Most people don't remember anything after looking away." I shrugged and looked away wondering what was so special about a necklace that marked her as a paladin.I blinked finally noticing that she was wearing a veil and thought "What the hell, I swore I could see her face at the beach. What is going on with my head?" I shook my head and my mind wandered to to Dwayne and Ayrean. In my thoughts of Dwayne I had to wonder what she'd been ut through while working with the gangs in Mexico. When they turned to Ayrean I had to wonder if I'd accidentally hurt her with my quick dismissal.

Since my brain wasn't focused on where I was going, I walked into a tree. Today just wasn't my day, I had a feeling before the day was over I'd be struck by lightning or shot. I trust those feelings, so I decided to be very careful about who I pissed off, and do my best to avoid lightning rods. Sadly no matter how many preparations you make, theirs always a chance you're going to screw up. For some odd reason, when there's a chance I end up doing just that, screwing up in my prepartions. I walked into a third object while thinking of how to prepare, however this time, the object was actually a person. They looked down at me and I looked up then said "Sorry, I wasn't paying attention t where I was going." They just looked down at me as I slowly got to my feet then hopped in the back of the charger that Dwayne and Shandi were in. I smiled at them and asked "Mind driving me to the high-school? I need to get my bike back, and I want to check on a few friends." They shrugged and gave me my requested drive, a long the way the three of us each wrestled with our own internal dillemas.

When we got to the school the three of us got out of the car and I walked over to my bike. I checked to make sure it was alright then walked into the school figuring I'd best get to class. I blinked when I noticed the school was empty then looked at my watch and sighed. I walked back out and grabbed my bag then pulled on my helmet and prepared to head home. After all it was saturday, and I was really tired of screwing up all day. I gunned the engine and headed back to the house. I didn't realize that Shandi and Dwayne were following me, or the asassin twins were watching us. As I drove I slowly cleared my mind of all the problems that were floatimnng around in it. I blinked when that darker voice slowly said "So you've found a way to protect yourself. I wonder if you truly understand that the things you call supernatural are part of the regula order. I guess we'll find out what you can accept when yourr 'friends' tell you some of their secrets." I shook my head trying to make the thought go away and turned my bike around and overturned trash can.

After about ten more minutes I got to the house and stopped my bike.I blinked when I saw Mac and the othersstanding infront of the house arguing. I and turned off my bike then walked over and yelled "EVERYONE SHUT UP!!!!!!" They all stopped midsentence and looked at me questioningly. I pointed at Mac and said "Whatever your here for, I have a feeling it involves me. IF, Genetech wants anyone tell them that I'll show up tomorrow, and hear their requests. You keep arguing with my friends and my feral side is going to kick your ass. Understood?" He nodded slowly and I turned to Dasher who he'd been arguing with and said "You go and relax, because this stress is not good for you in your condition." She looked at me, then turned around and walked inside. I turned back to Mac and said softly "You cause any of the girls any more stress and I'll personally bleed you to within an inch of death. Oh and I do mean bleed, not beat." He stared at me and I growled showing my fangs then walked inside to check on everyone else. The moment I was through the door I heard a gunshot and felt something hit me in the chest.

I looked down to see a thin blood stain spreading across my chest and fell to my knees. Everything started to fade away other than a deep burning in my chest and one of my last thoughts was "So this is what dying feals like. Well at least it doesn't hurt _as much as they say it does in most books." _ I shivered as my body's ability gave out and my chest hit the ground. By this point I wasn't feeling anything and my voice wouldn't work. I blinked when I saw a guy who looked somewhat like me, except that he had a lot more scars, and his left arm looked like someone had tried to hack it off. He grinned at me and said "Welcome to the land of the unkillable kid. I only have a few minutes, but I should warn you, the gods are watching everything that goes on. I share your name, and because of that you and I are linked. You may want to watch out for creatures that work for chaos, since you are taking my place. I guess I'll see you later, since your friends are already bringing you back." I glacned down to see that I was starting to fade and wondered if he meant I was actually starting to move on.

I woke up to see Cole, Shandi, Mac, Dasher, Thowan, and Reina all standing over me with stunned expressions on their faces. After a few seconds Shandi said "I guess you are touched by the gods, or else those markings are a coincidence." I blinked and was about to speak when Reina, Dasher, and Cole all started hugging me and wouldn't let go. Shandi looked at me and I tried to shrug then glaned at the girls asking for help. Thowan got the idea and pulled Reina off then said something to her and they pulled off Dasher and Cole. I slowly got to my feet and glanced down at my chest. There was a small hole that was starting to heal, but it appeared would leave a scar. I sighed then turned around to the doorway and saw the two assassins standing there with stunned expressions on their faces. I realized that they were the ones who shot me so I smiled then flipped them off and walked past looking for a new shirt.

Shandi followed me and I turned around then shoved her up against the wall and asked "What do your gods know about a man named Jake? He supposedly took the same last name as me, and he wrote the books I got out of the library. Don't tell me you can't ask your deities these questions, because I know they're listening to us right now. I also know that you are obviously someone high up because I can smell your fertility, and can smell that you're a vampire. Those two things do not go well together when you're obviously older than the person I'm talking about supposedly." She stared at me and I said "Sorry I'm being so harsh, but right now I'm trying to figure out how the hell I came back to life after being shot in the chest, and why I share the name of an author who supposedly visited worlds where magic is real. He then wrote that magic had come back to this world, and we just haven't seen any real signs of it because we're so focused on technology. Hell he even said the isle of avalon was a real place, that he'd visited. Most people thought him nuts, until he vanished again."

She studied my face then said "FIne I'll ask your questions, but you'll pay the price. Agreed?" I nodded and she walked off as I let go of her shoulder. I walked downstairs and pulled on a shirt after studying the new markings that had appeared on my chest and stomach. I shivered when I saw that the oldest marking for death was covering the scar tissue on my chest. I walked back upstairs when my shirt was on and the assassin twins looked at me with expressionless faces. I walked past them and slammed Mac into the door frame. He looked at me and I growled softly. He stared me in the eyes and I stopped growling then set him down and walked outside. I sat down on my bike as Shandi walked up. She looked at me and said softly "It appears you and he are the same person." I started to protest when she held up a hand and I let it go. She looked at me and said "Now for your real answers, they have three requirements. The first is acceptance. The second is awakening, and the third is agreement to complete a task."

I blinked and said "Awakening?" She shrugged and I sighed then turned to Mac who was walking past and said "How was project Beta?" He stopped and looked at me then reached for his scimitars. I smiled and put a gun to his forehead before he could react and said "Give me a reason. I didn't count you an enemy, still don't really, but if you keep this up I will." Then with a quick floursih of my hand I put the gun in the holster on my left hip and turned back to the others. I glanced at Dasher who'd just walked out of the kitchen and said "I think that next week end I'm heading out by myself, you guys are all staying here. I might take Ms. Shandi, but that's because I have some questions for her. After a few seconds I walked over and kissed Dasher then hugged Reina and headed back outside.

Mac looked at me when I got outside and said softly "Jake meet my friendSteve Brightflame." He pointed to the direwolf from earlier and I growled softly sensing something about him that was different. Mac smiled and said "He was one of the first members of project beta. He and I worked together throughout it." I sighed then slammed my fist into a tree nearby then walked off trying to control my anger and irritation. AFter a few minutes Mac walked up and said "I challenge you to a fight." I looked at him questioningly and he said "The assassins, me, and Agro versus you and three others. You have ten minutes to decide." I thought about it then held out my hand with a nod. He slowly shook it seeming surprised then walked off after talking to his friend Steve. I watched them and the assassins walk off then walked inside. Everyone looked at me and I pointed to the kitchen then walked into it deep in thought.

After about twenty minutes everyone else came into the kitchen and I said "I need three people who are willling to fight alongside me. Rodrik, and Jonas are not allowed to go becasue the person I'm fighting has faced them before, and he's got new allies. I want atleast one person who specializes in heavy weaponry, one who specializes in assassination, and the other can be anyone." They started discussing among themselves then Shandi sat next to me. I sighed and said "Ok that's one." Dasher walked up grinning and I said "That's two, so who's my third person?" Dwayne slowly walked over and sat down next to us. I grinned and said " We're going out to the docks. I have a feeling our opponent's are already there." Liz and her siblings gave us dark looks as if they wanted to join us then walked off as we headed out to the charger. I got behind the wheel and turned it on while the other three climbed into the passenger's seats. I drove the four of us to the warehouse district and got out then picked the best places to set everyone up at.

I grinned at Dasher and said "Guess you'll get to use those claw gloves of yours after all." She nodded and I had to laugh at the irony of the fact my team was the exact opposite of Mac's. Dasher slowly pulled on her gloves which suddenly grew humongous claws. I glanced at Shandi and she slowly pulled out a long whip that was coated in blades. I shivered slightly seeing that then glanced at Dwayne. She'd just let her claws lengthen for weaponry. I grinned and said "Dwayne you take Agro, Shandi go after Mac, I'll take Nevyn, and Dasher can rip his sister to shreds if we have to." Everyone nodded and we each started searching for Mac and his friends. I found Nevyn in one of the abandoned building sharpening his knife I slammed into him and we flew out the window he'd been sitting infront of. I drew my blade as the two of us rolled through the air. I slashed at him and he used his knife to block it then since he couldn't resort to his usual tactic of vanish then strike from the shadows he just blocked my attacks trying to tire me out. As we fell I saw Dasher chasing after his sister who was flying just slightly faster than she could run.

In the case of those two, just like in the case of me and Nevyn, I knew that the one who tired out first would be the one who got hurt. After a few seconds Nevyn opened his wings and used them to get out of my reach, while I slammed thorugh a canopy and landed in a broken crate. I slowly got up and ducked as a throwing knife whizzed over my head. I shivered thinking that I now had to worry about being killed from the shadows since I'd lost Nevyn. I dived through a doorway just as a bullet slammed into the wall where I'd just been sitting. I threw a knife and followed the direction the bullet came from with my eyes then followed it back to it's source. However Nevyn was already gone by the time I got there. I growled then dived out of the window as yet another knife came flying at where I'd just been. I shivered then followed Nevyn's sent and tackled him from above. He looked at me as I slammed my head into his. I winced when I felt his head spikes dig into my skull I wrapped my arms around his throat and squeezed until he passed out then let go and picked him up. I knew I'd gotten lucky in beating him. If I'd been any slower it would be me who was dead instead of him being knocked out.

I blinked when I saw that Shandi had thrown MAc down already and Agro was still fighting Dwayne. I blinked seeing that Agro who was normally very calm and kind was acting as feral as me when I was pissed. I tossed Nevyn down next to Mac then pulled out some rope and tied them up. With that done I watched as Dwayne and Agro kept attacking back and forth. However after a while they finally calmed down and started to actually talk. I realized that the two seemed to be made for each other then jumped as Arzosah came flying in and landed next to her brother covered in scratch marks. Dasher walked over dusting off her gloves and sat down. I tied her up then turned to Agro, and saw that Tibu had just walked up. Tibu smiled slightly and said "Sorry Jake, I tried to warn them, but they just wouldn't let it go. Mac's dad's been riding him about this for weeks. So, you guys mind giving us a place to stay? He said that if we didn't beat you not to come back. I think most of Genetech wants you guys gone." I shivered ashe finished talking then walked over and checked on his friends.

I grinned glad that I'd recently taken a loan from a friend and bought an apartment complex, because the hous just wasn't big enough anymore. I drove back to the house after we tossed our incapacitated new friends in the back and made sure they wouldn't freak out. When we got to the house I headed down to my room to check my computer, because I'd recently been talking to a stock broker. I hadn't told anyone yet but I was actually eighteen as of midnight. I yawned as I checked my messages then replied to my stock broker and went back upstairs. The others looked at me and I said "I have a place that anyone who doesn't want to stay here can stay. It's an apartment complex about a mile up our road. It was just built last week, and with a friends help I got ahold of the deed." Everyone stared at me then we dropped Mac and the others off with Dwayne to explain to them.

I drove back to the house then walked down to my room and passed out. As I slept I ended up dreaming about someone who reminded me of Shandi, but had a different aura. I woke up just as he and I were about to fight and a voice in my head said _"It appears you have a new rival, you also have to worry about beside the project beta members, and the Genetech's lap dogs who want you dead." _ I walked upstairs and was tackled by Dasher and Reina who looked at me with those pleading eyes. I blinked and said "I'm guessing you two and Sam want something from me, despite being pregnant." They nodded and I mummbled "I should have known." then headed back to my room. When I got down there I saw that Sam was already there with a big smile on her face. I blinked and said "Damn news travels fast." She nodded then tackled me and started taking off my shirt.
