“Great mother," Kara cursed as she picked her up, finding her small enough to cradle her in her arms.
“Hood," she said, shaking her to try and rouse her. She opened her eyes, but Kara could see that her pupils were shrunken and focused on the far distance. “Hood, try to stay awake. I know somewhere I can take you," she said, hoping against hope that she really did know where they were.
“At least, if it's still there."

Still naked as the day she was born, Kara ran through the forest, carrying the semi-conscious form of Hood, like a mother would carry a cub. Her footpaws beat a drum-like sound against the soft dirt ground with each pace, while her eyes scanned the route for familiar rocks, trees, anything that would promote a flash of recognition to reassure her they were heading in the right direction.
They rounded a thicket, leading to an area of open ground, and she slowed to a walk while trying to get her bearings. The light was fading. During the run it had shifted from the earlier verdant green cast by the canopy, to an amber hue. Now, a shade of deep blue began to take hold in the distance.
The moment she broke pace, Kara felt a chill. Her fur, normally soft and short, was soaked through with sweat, and matted against her skin. Tiny rivulets of perspiration ran down her arms and legs, forcing her to wipe her brow with her upper arm.
She tilted her head back to try and discern the time from the state of the sky, but that caused her to feel light-headed. Her pulse thundered in her ears as she fought the momentary dizziness, just managing to stay on her footpaws.
Kara had been trained to endure much hardship, as much as any member of her clan. She could run all night and day, under normal circumstances, but those did not include carrying a human girl in her arms. With night encroaching, and her stamina wavering, she considered that it might be safer to hide somewhere close by, and resume the journey in the morning. The trees around them were large, gnarled, and ancient; there were bound to be places in which to conceal themselves.
“Hood," she whispered, looking down at the woman cradled in her arms.
She didn't respond.
“Hood!" she repeated, giving her a gentle shake, but still, there was no response.
Kara knelt down, angling the girl's body in such a way as to be able to place a paw on her head. She felt lukewarm, but Kara knew that humans were, on the whole, colder than wolves, and this meant she must be feverish.
She cursed under her breath. If they stopped here, Kara knew that she would last the night, but Hood?
A thought forced its way into her mind, gaining strength the more she tried to ignore it. She could just leave Hood here, stashed away in a hiding place. She bore the human no ill will, but if Kalrath had been telling the truth, Rantan and Vargas were stalking her, and if they found her at the same time, she might be unable to fight them off. They would catch her, hold her down and, and…
Succeed, she told herself. Then, this while ordeal would be for nothing.
But if she abandoned her, she knew that Hood would almost certainly die.
She looked down at the girl in her arms, for all the world looking like she was sleeping. Her blonde hair was pushed aside, and her eyes were closed. Beads of sweat were standing on her forehead, on her smooth, rosy cheeks, and Kara's eyes drifted down to see that even her exposed neck and collarbone were drenched in sweat.
Yet despite all of that, she was beautiful.
“Ugh, you're going to get me into all sorts of trouble, y'know that?" Kara said.
She hefted the girl once more and got back up, then took off at slower running pace through that clearing, then downhill, half-running, half-climbing through the undergrowth.
She would run for another hour before she was certain they were nearing their destination, for the ground levelled out, and the trees became larger, wider. These were different to the rest of the forest; great Sheer Oaks, at times up to thirty-feet wide at the base, with black-brown barked trunks that stretched up as high as a-hundred-and-fifty feet.
“Where… What are those?" Hood gasped.
Kara glanced down to see that Hood was peering out through half-closed eyes.
“These?" she asked. Hood nodded, and Kara explained,
“They are ancient things. Elder Nayruth said they were planted by the elves, when the world was young, and that they will wither if the magic leaves this place."
The thought took her back to a distant memory; snow was on the ground, but the trees were in bloom. She was a cub, standing before Nayruth, wise elder and her surrogate grandfather, and he was answering the same question, in this same way. She wondered if she would ever see him again, but then remembered that even if she did, he would likely consider her a renegade.
“Miss Kara? Miss Kara! You're hurting me!" she squealed.
Hood's shrill voice brought her back to the task at hand, and she looked down to see that she had tensed her clawed paws.
“Sorry," she said, and relaxed her grip. “In any case, we're almost there; I can smell water."
Hood's button nose twitched as she sniffed the air.
“All I can smell is gross wolf sweat," she said.
Kara frowned. Almost right away, Hood brought her slender hands up to her mouth, and clasped them over her jaws in a futile attempt to cram the words back in. The gesture was adorable, and Kara smirked, then broke into open laughter. Hood tensed up in her arms, then turned a colour that rivalled the red of her muddy cloak.
Kara kept walking, and before long, she could hear the sound of rushing water. They soon found themselves at the edge of an open space, shrouded in darkness, where that sound filled the air.
“This is the place," Kara said, as she lowered Hood to her feet, holding her steady.
“This? There's nothing here." There was a clear tone of fear in Hood's voice as she stared out into the darkness.
“Just wait," Kara said.
At that very moment, a cloud must have shifted, uncovering the moon, as moonlight lit up the treetops. That same silver moonlight seemed to leak downwards, filling the nooks and crannies of the tree-bark like lines of glowing liquid. It rushed down the trunks until it hit the ground, spreading outwards along the low-lying bushes and plants, outlining their leaves in a similar glow.
This illuminated what laid at the centre of the open space. It was a plunge pool, roughly circular, bordered by a cliff on the far side, and wide enough that even with her strength, Kara knew she would struggle to skip a rock across it. The water it contained had a strange quality, in that it didn't reflect the silver moonlight; instead, it seemed to glow with a blue hue. It was fed by a waterfall half as tall as the nearby trees, a solid-looking ribbon of white water that cascaded down a rocky cliff face, while Kara knew that underground channels conveyed the water to a distant river.
“It's so… Pretty…" Hood gasped. No sooner had the words left her lips than she passed out, and Kara was forced to catch her. She laid her on the ground, before yanking off her boots, revealing her dainty feet, as slender as her hands.
“You need to bathe in the water," Kara said. She then parted the girl's cloak, and studied her dress. It was filthy, blood-stained, and torn in any number of places; still, it had been quite fine until earlier, and she regretted what she would have to do next.
“Sorry," she grumbled, then dug her claws into the material around Hood's waist, and with a jerk, ripped the garment from neck-to-hem, connecting together half-a-dozen other tears.
Hood was left lying before her, wearing only her underwear. The first thing that Kara noticed was that, unlike her own chest, with its large, grey-furred breasts, Hood's chest was slight, so much so that she was wearing no bra or similar garment. The skin on her body was as smooth as that on her face, while her nipples were a shade of light pink that matched her lips. Her torso was just as smooth and slender, with only the slightest amount of paunch around her waist.
Against her better judgement, Kara understood why Kalrath had been so keen. But she needed to be submerged in the water, and before that could happen…
Kara looked down at Hood's underwear. Virginal white panties, they were adorned with a tiny red bow at the front, where the cotton cloth was stretched tight over the maiden's mound. Kara worked her paws underneath each side of their waistband, but just as she did so, Hood roused and began to squirm, in an attempt to get away.
“N-no…" she gasped.
“Hood, come now, I've been naked all day, and you need to do this," Kara said.
“But-“
The wolf gripped the outside of the waistband and gave the waistband a yank. The sides slid down the girl's creamy thighs, but the front was caught on something, stretching the waistband taut. Kara was about to move a paw to free it when it came loose of its own accord with a muted twang.
The sight that greeted Kara, once that underwear was around the maiden's knees, was one that she would not soon forget.
