Learning to Swim - Epilogue
#38 of Entropy Series
The gang gets together again for a happy occasion!
This is the end! The tail end of the book, anyway. Heeee! I'm giddy about finishing the bulk of my first book EVAR, though editing, collating, paginating, and potentially distributing still are on the table. Gods help me if I ever release this thing.
The epilogue was excruciatingly cute to write. There's no sex or anything for those wondering; I like to keep the bowm-chicka-wow-wow in my main chapters so the epilogue can act as a cooling-off zone between the volumes. That doesn't mean there isn't a little something racy here and there though, haha. Have fun reading the last of Learning to Swim, and keep an eye out soon for the Prologue / Part I of the next book in the series--Dust and Echoes--to appear soon in this same story folder.
As always, this story contains adult content and explicit sexual imagery. If you aren't allowed or don't wish to view such material, please stop reading immediately. To all the rest, enjoy! Comments and critiques are welcome and encouraged.
"Do you, Robyn Patricia Winchester, desire Ilaria as your lifemate and one true love, promising to share in all that life offers and suffers, to be there for her in times of need, to soothe her in times of pain, and to support her in all endeavors, large and small?"
The nearly speechless and sobbing squirrel nodded a few times to the minister before gathering the most simple of words. "I do."
With an understanding smile the minister turned his attention to the otter at Robyn's side. "Do you, Ielunschra Mikhaila Rihzyet, desire Robyn as your lifemate and one true love, promising to share in all that life offers and suffers, to be there for her in times of need, to sooth her in times of pain, and to support her in all endeavors, large and small?"
Ilaria more readily took her bride's paw and gazed down into her eyes. "I do."
"Then let you show your commitment to one another."
Robyn looked back to Adrian, Elliot, and Ashe behind her, Ellie whispering something into the wolf girl's ear so she'd present her carried trinket. "I give you this bracelet as a symbol of our bond. As it encircles you, may it remind you always that you are surrounded by my enduring love."
Ari got a chill down her spine and nearly let burst a giggle as the bracelet clasped over her right wrist, her giddy mind racing as the cool metal touched her. She grumbled as she turned to Iolvin, who was wearing a matching tribal sirat against all odds, and reached out her paw for her ring. "This ring is a token of my love. I marry you with this ring, with all that I have and all that I am."
The minister gave the two a moment, both for Ilaria to bestow her ring upon Robyn's finger as well as to give them some emotional breathing room. "The gods favor this couple's commitment of a full life as one. It's my honor to pronounce you both wife and wife. You may now kiss your bride."
"Damn straight I will," Robyn snickered as she opened her arms, soon to be filled by her new wife.
The two tenderly drew out a sweet kiss, enjoying their first embrace as lifemates so much that Ilaria nearly collapsed upon her bad leg. "You make me weak in the knees, Pillow," Ari chucked as they barely parted muzzles.
"Family, friends, and tribesmen, I present to you Misses Ielunschra and Misses Robyn Rihzyet."
The whole room stood and clapped, with the occasional cheer and whistle from Ilaria's side of the family. The newlyweds slowly walked down the aisle with their arms proudly interlocked, huge grins stretching right across both their faces. As they walked off the carpet laid upon the grass they were both met with a pelting of rice from a few work friends that managed to rush ahead of them, nearly making the two want to run for the lake instead.
"Gah! Alright! Robyn laughed as she fought her way to the house with Ilaria shielding her from the bombardment. "Enough rice already!"
Ari stumbled a bit as she hit the concrete awkwardly with her prosthetic. "Woah. Seriously, you're great friends and all but..."
The group's assault subsided but the cheers and congratulations remained in full bloom. "Thanks, mates. Now who wants some cake?!"
"Not so fast there, sweetie." Dee walked up and handed Robyn her bouquet of flowers, then straightened the tail of her elegant dress while lifting it for her to spin around. "Aren't you forgetting something?"
Robyn rolled her eyes and turned around, breaking her hold on her new wife for a moment. "Well excuse me if I'm a tad excited, Dee. But that's why you're my bridesmaid, yeah? Better get out there though. You deserve a chance at this." Robyn took the flowers and held them up high for everyone to see. "Who's ready to play catch?"
The bulk of the women in the audience crowded around the side of the pool upon hearing the announcement, but Dee remained in place to keep Robyn's dress just off the ground. "Don't worry about me, hon. Just go ahead."
With a shrug of defeat at Dee's words, Robyn hurled the bouquet up into the air with all her strength. It floated up high for a full second before the wind took hold of it and sent it careening into the water. However, just as it was about to plummet into the deep end a single long arm reached out to grab it, followed by the rest of the fur controlling it teetering off his balance and into the water.
The whole crowd fell silent as the flowers alone remained dry above the water. Then Iolvin started treading water and his head popped up with a gasp. "I got 'em! They're still good for a retry!"
The furs around the edge congratulated Yoyo as they pulled him out the pool, Ellie in particular offering his paw with a satisfied smile. "Silly. You don't retry after someone's ~caught~ it."
Dee squeaked in delight from behind Robyn. "I told you not to worry. My man's in it for the win, even if he doesn't know it."
Catherine walked up and took Dee's place so the bridesmaid could go celebrate with his sopping mate. "Time for the metering kisses too, lovelies. Just as soon as my own husband decides to join us."
"Kisses?"
Ari sighed as she remembered a tradition of her mother's side. "Yeah. The bride kisses her elder step-groom and vice versa. You... don't have to do that one if you don't want to kiss my dad. Sorry, mom."
"But... I mean, how much does it mean...?"
"The kissing thing?" Vasily groaned as he found his way over. "Well I won't be hurt if we don't do it. Not by ~you~ anyway. What about you, Ielunschra?"
"I don't mind. I'll leave it up to Robyn's dad."
As if by cue, the elder squirrel walked up beside Vasily. "Congratulations, you two. So, did I hear my name?"
"Patrick, right?" Cathy pointed the squirrel to face her daughter and very matter-of-fact simplified things for him. "Kiss my daughter like you were her husband. Quick."
"O-Okay...--!!" Hearing that one word was enough for Ilaria to go ahead, not wanting to spoil the moment with too much dead time. The two started with a barely passable kiss, but it soon blossomed into a deep, sensual embrace of roaming paws. "Oh... wow. What was... that?"
Ilaria blushed as she pointed out that the two of them had the beginnings of erections tenting from their clothing. "If either groom gets hard it's a sign of fertility and good fortune. Sorry if I was a little abrupt about it, but it's a spur of the moment sort of thing."
"Oh..." Patrick wiped a bit of drool from his muzzle and stood up straight, not bothering to correct his pants with tradition as the excuse. "Then I'd say you're good on both, lass. It's a bit concerning that I have to aim up to kiss you though. That's a might feat for ya' Robby, yeah?"
Robyn chuckled at the concept and placed a paw on her father's shoulder. "Well thank you for doing that, papa. But could you please hide yourself down there? It's a bit much for your daughter to look at."
The group all let out a laugh as Patty flushed red. Ilaria recovered a tad faster than the others though when Sprite fluttered onto her shoulder and pulled up her glasses.
"Call her Robyn, please. And don't go out of your way, Sprite." Ilaria went bug-eyed in tandem with Patrick as her glasses dissipated right into his gaze. "Oh, sorry. She's a little electronic friend of ours. Totally safe, I swear."
"We call her Sprite, papa, and I wouldn't have a spouse right now without her help."
Patrick adjusted his pants and stood up straighter. "Well I can't complain if she makes my pumpkin happy. She's right odd though. Now if you'd kindly show me to the whisky, please? I still don't have my nerves back after that flight."
"I'm just glad you actually got on an orbiter for me, papa. I know how much it scares you. Sorry it was such short notice."
"Speaking of..." Ari gave her spouse a heavy hug and then pointed to the cake just inside the house. "We need a heavy helping of cake in the face, stat!"
Robyn looked to the cake and then back to Ari with a playful smile. "You wouldn't!"
"Damn right I would!" Ilaria picked up her wife's chin and gave her a deep, drawn-out kiss. "I love you enough to have your kind of ceremony, right? If we're mixing your traditions and ours, we're trying them ~all~."
Robyn drooped her head into her wife's very exposed chest and sighed in defeat as she watched Catherine head off to retrieve the cake. "Oh bugger."
"Aha! That did it." Ilaria inspected the slot where the door just ahead of her slid into the wall, then once her curiosity was satisfied she spun back around to face Robyn. "I'll admit defeat. It was the number and ~then~ pound after all."
"Hehe, I knew it. They always design these backup keypads the same way." Robyn started to enter the room ahead when Ilaria purposefully blocked her path. "Hey, what gives?"
"Shouldn't I carry you to the bed or something? Isn't that how this sort of thing normally goes?"
"I'm half your weight and pregnant and you're down a leg." The squirrel forced her way past, making sure to tug her whole dress through in case the door decided to eat it. "Sometimes tradition can bite it. I wouldn't mind finding that bed though, love."
Ilaria nudged Robyn against the foyer wall with her leg between hers and hunched down so the two's faces met. "Oh, planning to start the honeymoon ~right~ are we?"
"Well I won't object, sexy." Robyn pushed forward into a kiss, closing her eyes to really enjoy it. "But I am feeling a bit tuckered out, so we might have to call it a night soon. The baby's taking a lot out of me."
"Well your wish is my command, wifey. Carbon gave us a whole two weeks so there's no rush." Ari stood up and took her new spouse's paw, guiding her to the main living room. "Speaking of, that guy's awful generous to pay for this penthouse for us."
"He wanted us on this platform instead of some exotic beach. I expect him to pay for the hassle." Robyn broke free of her mate's grasp and walked over to a large wall of windows that faced the inside of the elevator. "Wow. I never thought I'd see a structure this large. And we're on the top, right?"
"Not quite. The lobby map says there's a recreation deck above. This is just the top of the hotel." Ari looked about the penthouse, discovering four full suites connected to the main living area. Upon finding a couch a few meters ahead to sit, she then came across a gift basket sitting on the coffee table. "Ooh, presents."
"Damn, that's a gorgeous view." Robyn looked away from the opposite windows facing the ocean and went over to join her lifemate. "Just a shame it's colder than it looks. I really want a beach now."
"I think there's an artificial one above us, hon. We'll check it out later. But now..." Ilaria pulled the basket closer and gave the card to Robyn, wasting no time after to shred the wrapping free. However the contents of gifts were vastly different than either of the two expected. "It's full of dildos? Condoms? What the hell?"
Robyn suppressed a chuckle as she flipped open the card for a quick read. "I wasn't sure how you two got along, but the army says to always be prepared... Carbon."
"That's a bit creepy."
"I think the cheeky bastard's sort of sweet doing this." Robyn reached into the basket and pulled out a vee-shaped toy for inspection. "This one looks cute. A 'Feeldoe' huh?"
"You know I have the real thing, right?" Ari giggled as she pulled out a set of edible panties. "Some of this is overkill."
"It's got you in the mood though, Ottah."
Ilaria looked at the large tent in the front of her sirat and rolled her eyes. "Well maybe that's just the thought of making my new wife ~squeak~ all night long."
"And what if your new wife wants to make her new wife squeak instead? Hmm?"
Suddenly the front door slid open, a young female elk in a fine masculine suit walking in with a tray of flute glasses and a matching bottle of chilled champagne. "Sorry for intruding weedzout ze bell, madames. Ze 'ooves were full, oui?" The girl diligently made her way to sofa and prepared to open the bottle, her heavy French accent raring up again. "Monsieur Carbon decided du geeft a botzle of Bollinger '61, eef vous do not deesagree of courze."
"Bollinger...?" Robyn perked up as the bottle's label was presented while being opened. "That's ~real champagne~, Ottah. You know how much that costs these days?"
"I don't drink it, so I don't..." Ilaria shuddered as the cork gently popped into the girl's grip. "What's special about it?"
"Eet eez from my family'z 'ome country of France."
"France?" Ari sat back wide-eyed as she watched the glasses being poured. "Like, ~giant crater~ France? Damn. That's got to be some expensive hooch."
"Very." Robyn took a glass as they were handed out but kept it low. "Sorry to say this, but I can't have this. I'm pregnant, remember?"
"Oh, crap. That's right."
"Ah! I am zo very sorry!" The elk looked around in a flustered state as she placed the champagne in an ice bucket. "Merde. Que dois-je faire...? I wheel find vous an other drink, madame..."
"No, no! That's fine, dear."
"No, we 'ave plenty of more in Monsieur Carbon's cellar..."
"It's alright. It's still a fine gift." Ilaria put down her own glass and grabbed the girl's hoof with her paw. "Calm down. What's your name?"
"Ah... Je suis... My name eez Mademoiselle Bloom." The elk looked down to her kind-eyed guest and sighed as she loosened up a bit. "Fleur Bloom, madame."
"Fleur. That's a pretty name." Ari released her light grip once the girl was settled, then lifted Robyn's glass to her lips. "It's fine for a toast, Fleur. Just remember that my wife can't have alcohol from here out and it'll all be fine."
"But Ottah..."
"Cheers." With that, Ari tilted Robyn's flute in time with her own so they each took a small sip. "Ooh, this stuff is ~really~ good."
"Ottah!" Robyn forced her paw lower out of protest, but tried to hold back her anger beyond that. "Don't act so fast, Ari. We're here to relax, after all."
Ilaria got the hint and let Robyn do as she pleased. She nodded to Fleur and smiled as her glass went up for another taste. "Really quite good champagne, dear. Tell Carbon 'thank you' if you would."
"And ze... do vous 'ave que'zeons?"
"Oh, right. Is someone bringing up our luggage?" Ari looked about and definitely didn't spot their things. "I was told by the front desk that it would be here when we arrived."
"Ah. I 'ave unpacked eet for vous. Eet eez mon duty az valet."
Robyn placed her glass down on the table and sat back on the sofa. "Well talk about quality service, yeah? Guess we'll really be able to relax."
"Yeah, no kidding." Ari looked about at the four sub-suites and noticed only two had the doors open. Then she barely managed a sneak peek of rose petals scattered on one of the beds which drove her to a grin. "So we're set up in that room then? I've never been in a penthouse, or had this many rooms to myself."
"Ze far room eez Monsieur Carbon's, and I ask vous not enter zat area. Ze one to ze left iz mine, but vous may use eet as vous please." Fleur finally spotted the contents of the gift basket and made sure to clear up another point before squirming away. "Do not mind making ze mess--any mess at all. We are boz staying elsewhere in ze 'otel for now but I wheel steel clean ze rooms every day."
"Oh... that's..." Ilaria understood the point but couldn't get her head around another. "So you and Carbon live here together? Wow."
Robyn shrugged her shoulders and leaned against Ari's side. "I can't imagine the rent. Or how he affords it on a military salary, actually."
"He owns ze 'ole level." Fleur didn't even flinch making that statement, deciding only that things were done for the moment and reaching for a card in her jacket pocket. "My number iz 'ere. Please, do not 'esitate to call if vous needs zings. I will leave vous in peace."
"Oh, sure. Thanks for the help, Fleur." Ari took the fancy holographic card and put it on the table. Nice meeting you, hon.
"Ze pleasure iz all mine, madame."
Ilaria let the girl exit the penthouse before giggling to her wife. "She's s cute little thing, isn't she? I bet Carbon and her have some strange times up here."
Robyn had slowly latched onto Ari's arm, mumbling with her eyes drowsily shut tight. "Yeah... Ottah... cute..."
"Silly thing. Little guy's wearing you out, huh?" Ilaria leaned back, pulling Robyn down across her side as they half-laid over the couch. "I could get used to us like this. Nap time it is, Pillow." She glanced down at the bulge in her sirat as she reached for her champagne, chuckling to herself. "You too, big boy. You'll defile her dress soon enough. For now though, we've earned a bit of rest."
